Barnhart says Muschamp will NOT go to Auburn

Barnhart "just got off the phone with Will Muschamp," and he emphatically stated that he will not be coaching Auburn next season.  Muschamp's language was extremely specific in Barnhart's quotes.  So the search continues.

Separately, I'm with Barnhart who earlier asked if Auburn fans were joking about being interested in Steve Spurrier.  Spurrier will be 64 years old entering next season. Auburn has long term problem starting with a complete absence of SEC caliber quarterbacks.  In four years with the Gamecocks, Spurrier has proven that even the Evil Genius needs a competent pro-style QB to win ball games. Generally speaking, long term problems require a long term solution, but don't let that sort of logic get in the Auburn Administration's way.

First off, as stated here, Muschamp doesn't scare any of us with his potential as a head coach. Like many of you, I don't see it either. I think AU is so smitten with him because he seems to be the top assistant and he looks to be the only name hot/splashy/sexy enough to come close to the hire they made in Tuscaloosa two years ago. The bottom line is that they feel like they've got to match the splash Bama made with Saban. The problem is that there isn't a Saban-type slam-dunk hire out there. Hence the Spurrier and Cowher rumors.

The ironic thing is that next year there will be a big-name, slam-dunk Saban/Davis hire out there waiting for the best job to open: Tommy Tubberville.

All of this is such fabulously great news for us. Unless they hire Gary Patterson - the best name that's come up that they might be able to hire.

Not to be that guy who posts off topic comments but I have one Capital One Bowl ticket that I am trying to sell. I'm a student at Georgia and it's in Section 101. Just looking to sell this baby at cost ($85) before I leave Athens for the break. If anyone wants this please email me at twjonesjr@gmail.com. Sorry for the threadjack PWD.

How come Auburn can't run a coaching search to save their lives? Miss State took care of things in like two weeks whereas Auburn even had Tirico and Van Pelt making fun of them on the radio the other afternoon.

Not only did MSU do a better job from a time/efficiency standpoint Watson, but I'm willing to bet right now that they got as good a coach as Auburn will end up with, or better. When the Bizarro Dogs are the gold standard for athletic department efficiency, something in the universe is horribly off-kilter.

Muschamp scares me for one reason Gen. Stoop. What if he tries to poach our OL and DL coaches to come be his coordinators?

I have heard the Coach Searels/OC idea around and I really don't get that, has he ever been responsible for calling plays or scheming in the play calling other than what goes with being a line coach? I understand that we wouldn't want to lose him as a line coach, but he really doesn't worry me as a OC, except that he is just a damn good coach at what he does.

Mr. Egger I am not in disagreement on our assistants. Of course, any coach who gets the AU job (and it's very much starting to look like someone who will need to find assistants with local recruiting experience) is going to come after our assistants. I'd worry most abou losing Searels and G-A-R-N-E-R, but I figure we can match AU on salary and we can surpass AU on job security. That'll probably be better than the title "upgrade" if offered.

Gary P. is the best choice if he can be pried away from TCU. He'll maintain a level of defensive excellence while bringing in the right attitude to compete. TCU has been a consistent winner under his leadership and they do it playing fourth fiddle in Texas.

Did folks see that former UGA assistant Doug Marrone is the new Syracuse coach?

I had never heard of Marrone to be honest. According to one bio, he was the O Line coach in 2000.

Hmmm...I wonder if Tommy will come back after a 2nd time scorned. If they don't have a coach locked up by the 4th of July, he just might...

Doug Marrone is a hell of a guy and I wish him the best. I got to drink a few beers and talk football with him at an alumni event the year he coached OL at Georgia (he got swept out with the end of the Donnan regime). Recruiting on the O-line wasn't the best that year, but it was a goofy year all around. I've followed his career since I met him, he is a respected and successful asst. coach. He can't do any worse than Robinson at Syracuse, as an alumni he will have his heart in it.

Sounds like Syracuse has got itself on the right path based on Marrone's comments to the press. Still don't like their AD one bit though.

Hell, in the pathetic excuse for a conference that is the Big East, they could be competing for a conference title in fairly short order.
