Draft Projections for Various Dawgs

David Hale talked with Todd McShay of ESPN about Dawgs in the draft. He has interesting comments about Stafford, Allen and Owens in particular.

I also checked out three mock drafts (no idea how "expert" any of these sites are). All three have Matthew Stafford as the #1 overall pick of the draft to the Detroit Lions. Those same sites all have Moreno as a first rounder going to various stops including the Patriots, Jets or Cardinals. Like I said, no idea if those sites are any good, but they make good conversation starters.

The second biggest error CMR ever made was redshirting Knowshon.

I think King is better than he has looked this year. He seems to be pressing when he comes in. Plus it’s hard to evaluate a tailback when you can't really run between the tackles. The OL doesn't blow defenders off the line of scrimmage opening up holes (which is the major problem w/ our redzone offense, just like '03). However, CSS is the one assistant I have unquestioning faith in, so next year will be better.

I think Richard Samuel would make a great LB.

I think we need to remember that we still have Dontavius Jackson (redshirted this year, should get some carries) and Carlton Thomas (smaller, quick back, should get a crack at returning punts/KO's) on the team to show what they can do next year as well.

Hell, that's not even considering the incoming Washaun Ealey, who will more than likely be reshirted but should be a stud.

That stable of running backs and Samuel's total lack of vision (but tremendous athleticism) make it so hard to believe that he is better suited to a RB than a LB.

For Stafford's own sake, I hope he does not get drafted by the Lions. William Clay Ford and the Lions are experts at turning good college quarterbacks (not just quarterbacks--anyone with talent, really) into NFL losers (see: Joey Harrington). I'd hate to see Stafford's career run into the ground.

If I'm Matt Stafford, my blood runs cold at the thought of these words: "With the first pick in the NFL draft, the Detroit Lions select Matthew Stafford, QB from the University of Georgia."

Never mind being the next John Elway. He's liable to become the next Shane Falco. The QB of the Lions is in line to take beatings of a Jerry Quarry-esque nature. What good are millions of dollars going to do you if you are beaten to a fine paste by the time you turn 25?

I cant blame anyone for taking the money, but Detroit? A suckhole town with a suckhole franchise, and probably the worst management team this side of the Raiders. He might do himself a favor by coming back and pulling a Matt Leinert. Maybe dropping several spots in the draft for whatever reason would add years to his career and allow him to walk without a limp after he retires.

If Stafford continues to project as the #1 pick, he's gone, no question about it. I would hate to see him suffer in Detroit, but as a projected #1 with the chance to lose millions if he stays, he's gone.

Stafford has these two options:

1) Leave this year, go to the Lions, make a bunch of money.

2) Leave next year, go to the Lions, make less money.

Staff needs to stay, he deserves better than to go rot in Detroit.

Not one of those mock drafts has the Falcons picking 32nd, so they're obviously full of crap.

does anyone know when the players have to declare for the draft?

Yeh, I believe Stafford is gone with the rookie cap on the horizon. But maybe the one thing to change his mind is the thought of playing with the Lions. What good is having Calvin Johnson to throw to if the only time you have time to do so is during the week at practice?

I agree, Carter.

We wasted that year of Knowshon, and now we're looking at 2 seasons and gone.

I sincerely hope CMR doesn't make the same mistake with Washaun. His high school numbers are staggering (ECI's classification notwithstanding).

If he's all that, we'll have him for three years at least. If he's a bust as a frosh, it won't cost much to find out.

They get to declare starting January 8, I believe. Not before then.

Maybe Stafford could pull an Eli Manning and refuse to go to the Lions? Maybe the Lions would trade that pick to someone else.

Detroit might NOT be the worst place to go. They have good WRs, a great rookie RB, and a little bit of talent on defense.

Kansas City would be great. Huge RB. Huge TE. Great WR corps. Too bad they don't get to pick 1st. I'd also love to see Stafford in Minnesota or Houston.

Moreno will get a break. He won't get Stafford $$, but he'll go to a team that is good and he'll be a stud on a good team.

so, are we pretty much for sure Stafford and 'Shon are gone? that's a shame. I hope CMR can really do some work and woo them. it will need to start with the defense, however.

If I were Minnesota, I'd seriously consider trading up for Stafford. They have an awesome O-line, an awesome young RB, a very competent defense and some decent receivers. They're only a solid QB away from Super Bowl contention. They're going to have to get a good QB in next year so he can take over for the field goal kicking horse of a QB in the next year or so while the team is still competitive.

Detroit would be an awful place to go. When was the last time Detroit was even at .500?

Of course Detroit might not even pick a QB with the first pick. Those folks seem to be dumb enough to think Matt Cassell would be "the answer". Cassell might join a long list of backups who has a hot streak, gets a big contract and then does nothing. The above might be because he goes to a team that sucks.

A QB is only going to be as good as his offensive line in the pros.

No matter when Stafford comes out, he really needs to pray that his stock falls so he is drafted by a decent team (see Roethlisbetger) and stands a chance.

No doubt the redshirt was a huge mistake on #24. Hard to imagine we lose 4 games (esp. to UK & Vandy) without him. Plus, one of the major problems of the season was that we had almost no running game to go with our young QB. Moreover, in one season, we figure out he's a workhorse and give him the rock early and often in '07 season...and it's hard to imagine us losing to SCu if we do that. That decision changed to complexion of the program for at least 2 years. If Washaun can go, play him. If #24 does come back, there's absolutely no reason to keep #22 at RB. He'd still get minimal carries and we would waste another year of his athletic ability buried on the depth chart.

Would anyone else like to see Richt go mad scientist and put Richard Samuel at strong safety? His speed and size makes him comparable to Thomas Davis, and I would love to see a safety who strikes fear into receivers the way TD did. Just a thought.

maybe pollack and green can come back for a "pep talk" to KM and MS. And by pep talk, I mean "Stay for the seniors, play the game you love now. You may have a really really really bad injury your first year. You love Georgia, just stay." I mean, too much potential didn't get chance to bloom this year. STAY.
