Off Season Workout News

The Banner Herald's notebook article includes an update about some changes with the off season conditioning programs. The biggest adjustment seems to be going from two large groups of players to three smaller groups. Within those groups they are also breaking down into more manageable sub-groups.

The goal is to provide more individual attention and accountability with a faster tempo.

This is good to hear. It was rumored that expectations within our strength and conditioning program had slipped a little last year, and some players were coasting through the process.

Smaller groups provide more opportunities for leaders to emerge and fewer opportunities for slackers to hide from their peers. Regardless of the validity to the rumors regarding the past, it's a positive move forward for a team that's in need of more toughness and player driven leadership.

Hopefully, the expansion of butts-mehre starts this summer. It needs it big time.

why does Butts-Mehre need expanded or renovated so bad?

The weight room is too small, the film room is too small. Even one of our recruits last year said it was small. It is very much needed.

Is there any way we can harness Rennie''s everything into pill form and supply the whole team?

Mitch, how much bigger is the new weight room going to be?

Anon 5:45, here is a link as to what the butts mehre expansion will look like. Construction will begin on it sometime this year most likely. It will be very nice.

This is much better than last season's off-season news... so far.

That's good news about expanding the weight room. These days, facilities matter a lot. I'm convinced Oregon gets every recruit it snags based solely on their weight room, which looks like a health club in Aspen. It's fantastic. UGA has beautiful facilities, but it's like an arms race in the SEC at this point. Recruits care about things like locker rooms as much as they care about tradition and championships.

Can anyone compare/contrast our S&C program versus another, better program? I am fairly ignorant when it comes to this....

Thanks!

Our S&C program is top notch. The director of Strength and Conditioning is a Hall of Famer in his profession.

S&C at the college level is about more than lifting weights and training fast twitch muscle fibers. It's about the development of leaders and a certain work ethic.

The S&C program (centered around Mat Drills) was the cornerstone for UGA's transformation from the Donnan era to the Richt era.

Other programs like UF have mimicked the concepts behind our programs and in some cases may have taken those ideas to the next level.
