Dawgs Topple the Gators

Earlier in the week, I suggested that "Georgia's players need a locker room brawl, a night with the girls from the ice capades, trust falls, or something to bust this slump." Turns out what they really needed was a pep talk from Coach Richt and Terrence Woodbury eating an entire box of Wheaties.

Georgia played with passion, protected the basketball reasonably well, and turned quality looks at the basket into points. The Gators probably took UGA lightly on the defensive end, but there is very little in the box score that shows the Gators offense struggling. Georgia beat Donovan & Company despite UF only turning the ball over five times and shooting the ball 42% from the three point line.

A Confession:
I'm sad to say I didn't attend this one. Judging by the attendance on TV, not many of you reading this are in a position to throw stones at me. It's the first time in years that I missed an SEC home game in which I didn't have a legit conflict. And I'll have to live with that. On the bright side, it was the first time I had seen Stegeman on my HDTV. The court area shows great in HD.

I'm proud of the team for playing hard and representing UGA with dignity. They needed a game like this.

Florida may have experimented with Coke II for a couple of years, but it's nice to see them back to Classic Donovan. Play some D next time, you morons.

So do we give Richt credit for two wins in football and one in basketball? Suck it Urban Cryer! Good win hoop dawgs, Tech will continue to be the standard of suckiness! No 0-fer in the SEC, any chance we give Tom Brennan a look? He did a good job at Vermont, he's Bobby Knight without the violence and he went to UGA!

"It felt so good to beat the Florida Gators, as obnoxious as they are sometime," said Butler, who didn't miss a shot the entire game, going 3-for-3 from the field and 2-for-2 from the free-throw line. "Georgia fans know it and I'm going to say it: As obnoxious as they are sometimes it felt soooo good to beat these guys, on your court and in front of your fans. I've been waiting for this for four years."

Tell me that isn't a great quote from Bulter! GATA Hoop Dawgs!

I'm proud of our boys for playing like true Junkyard Dawgs. Most everyone (myself included) had left this team for dead, and beforehand gave them no chance to win against a supposedly superior Florida team. But they came out fighting, played with heart, and didn't quit when UF mounted a comeback. In the end, they held on and did what even the mighty football team could not do: beat the Gators. Obviously I realize (unlike GT football fans) that one big win doesn't mean the program is fixed, and that there is still a LOT of work to do. But I nonetheless respect what they accomplished yesterday. Go Dawgs!

well how long of a drive is it for PWD to get to Athens? Then I'll decide to throw stones or not...

Dear Damon, can we please move the Student section to the first 5 rows...instead of sticking them at 1 end of the court.

Coach K,

At the very least, I don't understand why we have our own team shooting into the student section during the second half. That makes no sense at all.

As for putting the students in the lower rows all the way around, I imagine that wouldn't go over so well with some of the long-time season ticket holders who would be forced to stand for practically the entire game because of students in front of them.

PWD, maybe YOU are the reason our basketball program stinks so bad?

Perhaps you are the Cooler and should stay away from Stegeman as much as possible.

Whoever inherets Ware and HT3 is getting a great nucleus to build around.

Where was that AJAX all season? That was the guy who magically showed up in the SEC tourney last year and went AWOL until yesterday. How can that possibly happen?

And FisheriesDawg, look at what you are typing. Heaven forbid that the blue-hairs who rarely show up for games actually have to, gasp, stand up during games. Have mercy, next thing we know, you will be calling for them to "Superman that ho."

Sad that Felton could never explain what it meant to take pride in the G on your uniforms. Took a true man who loves UGA to do that! Look at the results when you play with a passion for your school!

I don't make it to near the number of games I'd like to, but I was able to make this one. I was expecting a blow out, and a light crowd, but was actually impressed with the number of fans that turned out, given how the season has gone. Not sure how it looked on TV but there was a decent crowd (many more than at the UT game this year), and they were generally loud and into the game the whole time. All that to say, great effort by the Dawgs in finding some heart and respect in themselves, and nice effort by the fans. You picked a helluva game to skip PWD.

RE: Seating and Students

1. UGA has one of the largest student sections as a percentage of seats in the SEC. It actually stretches from the endzone to mid-court lower level. Then the upper deck on the non-TV side is almost entire students til you get to the horseshoe area. Of our 10,500 seats I'd wager that 2,500 are students. They just haven't been coming.

2. The SEC has a rule that you can't have students behind either bench, and the student endzone section can't be next to the visitors seats.

3. The first 5 rows are big donor rows opposite the coaches at most school.

Now....that doesn't explain why:
A. We shoot into the student section in the 2nd half. We should definitely flip the possession sequence if possible.

B. Why we don't flip the TV angle from the alumni section / coaches seats to the student / faculty side.

Trust me. I've brought up issue B several times. LSU and Duke don't show the coaches side. They show the student side.

Czar,

No kidding. I was at Mississippi Valley State for goodness sake. To miss this one was a killer.

I was at the McThriller Dome for the SEC Championship, and I'm giong to Tampa for the SEC Tourney. So my Dawgly credentials are still pretty strong.

all the old geezers that just sit and watch dont help the players. screw them. they need to stand the whole time. maybe theyll make some noise.

thats what pisses me off about football games too. we need more student seats.

Well see Anon, they do.. their checks are what makes it justifiable to spend $30M on a practice facility.

Having said that, move 'em to the other side.

My parents came in town for the game, and I almost suggested we stay home and watch it on TV because I didn't wanna ruin the day. Luckily we actually went to the game. I was up in the general admission second level with them instead of the usual student section. It was hilariously fun to cheer with the Florida fans sitting less than 10 feet away. After the "And to hell with Florida!" line after the game, a 70-yr old Gator fan told me to chill with my attitude. I smiled and laughed. GATA the rest of the season, Dawgs!

PWD,

Definitely not questioning your devotion to the program. From what I read from you on a daily basis, you are by far one of the most die hard Dawg bball fans out there. Just saying I know you hate missing this one more than most.

"We shoot into the student section in the 2nd half. We should definitely flip the possession sequence if possible."

I heard Harrick speak to this many times while I was in school. If I recall correctly, the opposing team gets to pick which way they want to go in the 2nd half. The only away to get around it would be to put students behind both baskets.

Responding to BamaDog above, re: the older FL fan:

1. As is typical with an arrogant Gator (is there any other type?), they think they own the place, even if they are in someone else's home.

2. He's probably shocked that his glorious 2-time national chump lost to a winless SEC team that just fired its coach.

3. Telling you to "check your attitude" is ripe. Did you remind him that his advice is akin to the pot calling the kettle black?

4. I would have had a difficult time stopping myself from delivering an all-time verbal beatdown, without a curse word. Interestingly, I have learned to win the verbal spare w/out foul language as I've grown older. It has much more firepower.

5. F Florida. F them all straight to hell.

Original Blawger,

I just went through the NCAA rulebook and couldn't find anything related to which direction a team shoots. Perhaps it is an SEC rule you're mentioning, because I've been to games at Maryland and Georgetown where the opponents are forced to shoot into the student section in the second half...at Maryland they even hand out props to make it even more distracting.

At Florida, they don't have students on either end but the opponents do shoot into the side that has the pep band in the second half.

Fisheries,

I don't know what the Original Blawger was talking about. But the info I posted was an SEC rule as explained to me by a Butts-Mehre exec.

Yeah, the rule about not having student seating behind the bench is an SEC rule across all sports. I don't think the signs are still up anymore, but there used to even be notices down the third base line at Foley informing students that they weren't allowed to sit behind the visitors dugout per SEC rules.
