If we haven't formally asked for permission to speak with Anthony Grant, Lon Kruger, Brad Stevens or Brian Gregory, then the only logical conclusion one can draw is that our candidates are all still playing ball. (Or we're just sneaky bastards who aren't going to ask for permission until the deal is done....which seems unlikely given what I understand of the situation)
Meanwhile at Alabama, Anthony Grant will be in Tuscaloosa on Wednesday to visit with Tide officials. He's expected to get an offer while he's there according to the Tuscaloosa News, Birmingham News and Mobile Press-Register.

This looks awfully fishy to me. Who in the Sweet 16 are we hoping to land? Capel is NOT coming to UGA, and Mike Anderson is either staying at Missouri or heading to Alabama (Birmingham Al native). I trust DE, but it appears that we are not in the game yet. Big time jobs, much larger than UGA hoops job, may leave us holding the bag. Here is to expecting the worst, but hoping for the best.
Go for broke, Damon.
i say it's anderson. he's had run-ins in the past w/ alabama brass. and anyone who knows about athletic politics (so to speak) in alabama, knows uab folks don't necessarily care for anything u of a. i think anderson would be content just to get back to the south. the recruiting opportunities won't hurt either. i also think we're willing to offer way more than bama is. they're apparently set to offer anthony grant who will demand far less than anderson.
the week after felton was fired, a caller to an alabama sports talk show indicated that his daughter worked in the ath dept at uga and the name at the top of the list from the beginning was mike anderson. seemed believable enough to me.
I know... we could go after Coach K and offer him a new challenge! :-)
:-) <-- for the humor impaired!
You think we might be looking at Sean Miller? I think he'd be a great choice.
I like Damon Evan's play here.... it looks like Alabama is going to rush to hire Anthony Grant. If that's the case, Alabama's coaching position may close up quickly, in which case we would be free to pursue the sweet 16 coaches without competition from Alabama. I don't know if that is how Evans is trying to play it, but that could be the way it goes. Bama could jump the gun and we would come away with the better coach! (Let's hope....)
I don't think Mark Anderson is a stretch... his son is graduating from Missouri this year, and we could significantly upgrade his pay.
anderson or miller i hope
I don't care what anyone says about "can't get Capel" or anyone else for that matter. I want Damon to send a message that we are serious about basketball. When you're serious about competing at the highest level, you don't listen to people who use the word, "can't."
That doesn't mean we'll get Capel or whoever the target might be. But it sends a message that we're serious about this. Settling for plan B type coach without talking to the A list does not send that message.
Let Damon try, even if he fails. Quit talking about "can't." It's bad enough to have to put up with it from hoops impaired people like Kincaid and Andy Katz.
I am certainly not on the Capel bandwagon, but why the hell wouldn't he come to UGA? With the possible exception of believing life is easier in the Big 12, what does OU/Norman have to offer in any quantifiable or subjective way that UGA and Athens does not? It seems like the talent level within the 4 mile radius would make our job attractive to anyone.
Please, don't start with all the Stegman crap. We our offering a coach the UNIQUE opportunity to build a legacy aat a major university within a major conference with a new major television contract with major talent within a few hours drive.
Do not sell UGA short.
Our new Coach is in the Sweet 16...
Geno Auriemma!!!
Go Arizona. Beat Louisville.
I've got a prediction for everyone:
I have no idea who the coach will be, but I sure will be pissed if the guy we hire sucks!!
Here's hoping for good out of the unpredictable...
I don't think I'd want Gary Williams (MD), but he could be tired of his tenure and move on.
