Dawgs rock APR rankings. Tech loses scholarships

I will write this using short sentences so the Tech basketball team can feel included in the discussion. UGA good. Tech bad.

The academic progress scores were released by the NCAA yesterday. Georgia football and women's basketball APR scores lead the SEC in their respective sports. Tech's men's basketball team scored below the required minimum and lost two scholarships.

BTW -- If a kid leaves school early for the draft or transfers out in good academic standing, his departure doesn't hurt your APR. The argument of "we put people into the NBA" really has nothing to do with why Tech's scores are so poor. They use the negative connotation of UGA as a "football factory" to justify our long term success and their long term failures on the gridiron. In basketball, the shoe is clearly on the other foot.

I loved this tidbit at the end of the ABH article:

"Auburn and Lamar both had four programs lose at least some portion of a scholarship."

Hey nerds, aren't you guys supposed to be the 'smart' ones? Even your 'student-athletes' that you guys swear up and down are Rhodes scholars...

suck it, GTU.

This is such awesome news for those of us who work with the "my school is better than yours" teck crowd. Beautiful. The only thing better would be if their football team was the one losing schollies.

Paul, this wouldn't have happened if you'd hired me a couple of years ago! Too bad!

Lets see how many Anon tech posters reply on this comment thread.

I hear crickets chirping.

I love it when my sports news comes dipped in a rich glaze of situational irony. . .

Paul, you actually do get docked if someone leaves early. Each "term", each athlete can accumulate 2 points, 1 for good academic standing, and one for being enrolled.

If an athlete leaves school without graduating, but in good academic standing, then he gets 1/2 possible points that semester. If he leaves with academic issues, that's 0/2. Good academic standing, still in school = 2/2 pts.

So guys like Dickey, Faye, Diaw, Thaddeus Young, Crittention, all left early, all causing hits to GT's APR points..... even if they were in good academic standing. The point is the program takes a hit because they didn't graduate, even if they went to the NBA, etc.

Now, there were known academic issues at GT - Dickey, Clinch and Tarver were public with issues at one time or another. Not sure if there were non-public issues that impacted non-seasonal semesters and kids were able to get their grades up in time to play in the fall.

Just wanted to clarify

Those aren't sentences.

The GT AD just sent out a letter stating.......

"We became aware of this consequence last summer and collectively made the decision to leave two men's basketball scholarships unfilled for the 2008-09 season. This action, along with an academic performance plan, has fulfilled our obligation to the NCAA and we have subsequently moved forward in a very positive manner."

..........So I guess this is old news to them. Seems like their SID could have mitigated some of the fallout had he come forward with this earlier.

Yeah you doggies need a little education in the use of tense. The title of the post should be changed to "Tech lost scholarships [and still beat uga]."

Congrats on the APR though. Tech did well despite basketball. Good to see both of us making the state look smart.

Anon 6:21, rules of style would allow for such a variation: because the scholarship losses were in anticipation of a report like this does not change that they are still a consequence of the report. Hence, "loses" implies a direct result, and either way would be accurate.

Ultimately this is why you people are in Engineering. Found the tree, looking for the forest.

They were already lost anyways rbubp. No matter what alleged rule of style you invent, the scholarships were already lost.

"Loses" implies that scholarships were lost as a result of the report, which isn't true. Rather, Tech WOULD have lost scholarships, had they not already voluntarily removed them.

Anyways, that's neither here nor there. The funny thing is, I'm a Tech fan who didn't go to Tech. I was an English minor at a top 10 undergraduate university and then went to a top 10 law school - I can see both the forest and the trees at the same time.

Congrats again on the APR results.

Just to clear it up - GT's low APR is because of all the early departures. It was explained earlier in the comment thread, but you do not get maximum points for a player that leaves early.

That being said, GT lost scholarships because 2 players left early, and were ineligible. It is very likely that both were players that transfered out of the program or left without going to the NBA (Dickey and one other). You lose one scholarship for one year for every player that goes 0/2.
