Headlines from the Chicken Coop

The main talk track for the week is defense, defense, defense.
  • Defense rules - TheState talks about the tone of this game. Realistically, I agree that this one will be an ugly slug fest. I'm thinking that 17-10 sounds about right for a final score. Ron Morris goes one step further suggesting that maybe Spurrier be seen as a defensive genius. Oh. Brother.

  • But offense isn't a lost cause - The Charleston Post-Courier talks about Spurrier's work with their offense to turn things around. Spurrier's classic comment from this one, "When you only score 7 points, you're not dead set on anything."

  • UGA's losing record - The Associated Press points out that this is the first time the Dawgs have had a losing record since 1996. That season UGA started 0-2 with losses at home to Southern Miss and at South Carolina before beating Texas Tech in an incredible down pour.

  • AJ Green Profile - The Charleston paper does their yearly profile on hometown hero turned Dawg.

  • Gamecock Kicking Woes - We aren't the only ones with kicking woes. The South Carolina field goal kicker missed two attempts vs. NC State. However, he has kicked the ball deep on kickoffs.
This game will come down to turnovers and special teams. Both teams are fairly inept in the kicking game so that's a wash. It'll come down to who protects the ball. If we are -3 in the turnover margin again this week, we'll lose. If we're -1 or better, we'll probably win by 7-10 points.

I wouldn't call a 53 yard field goal inept.

Obviously, the KO coverage teams need some work, but the FG team looked good, and that was NO block in the back on our excellent punt return, in spite of what the refs claim.

Not to say I don't like them, but we're 0-1 with the taunting Splash image at the top of the page. Maybe we stop putting up taunts until we win one?

Yeah no kidding PTC. Do you think those Big 12 refs would have called that on an OSU punt return? I going to guess probably not. And for those that say that bad calls don't change the outcome of a game? Exhibit A: That Rashad Jones "penalty". It led directly to an OSU TD. If they don't call that, OSU either has to kick a loooooong field goal, go for it on 4th, or punt. Either way, the chances are very high that UGA probably would have gotten the ball back, gained some critical momentum, been still down by one score and had plenty of time on the clock to go down and possibly tie it up. Instead, they're down by 14 and that's ball game. Now, with the way the offense was playing, who knows if they could have scored, but they would have been in a much, much better position to at least attempt it.

Oh well. Guess it really doesn't matter now. Onto SC!

Black,

I started doing this last year. We did fine in most of the games I did it for except one.

Texas Tech down pour. That is when Hines Ward became my all time favorite Dawg. The end around on the two point conversion sealed it

Wow, that OK St team y'all lost to really looks like a top 5 team, getting blown out at home by HOUSTON.

My prediction: mutts struggle to win 4 this year. Losses to USC today, Arkansas, LSU, Tennessee, Florida, Auburn, GT.

Wins against Arizona St, Vandy, Tennessee Tech, and Kentucky.

Sad thing is, that's not a stretch at all. 4-8. You heard it here first.
