Back from the Ledge
David Ching suggests that it's time to climb back from the ledge and take a deep breath. I happen to agree. Things are never as good or bad as they seem.
Ask yourself this...after the 2007 UT game, did you think we'd go 11-2? After the 2006 UK game, did you think we'd finish the season with 9 wins including wins over three ranked teams including the #5 team in the nation?
Do I think this group is going 11-2? No. Am I annoyed by the sheer fubar nature of Saturday. Obviously. But I don't think this is freak out time yet. We just lost on the road to a team that is now ranked #5 in the nation. I still think we can go 9-3 regular season plus a win over an 8 or 9 win ACC team in the Chick-Fil-A Bowl.
If we lose this week...then it's freak out time. For me at least. Because this is looks like the least talented Gamecock squad since 1999's 0-11 unit. But right now, we're a team that played poorly offensively on the road vs. a quality opponent (and like it or not Oklahoma State was a quality team). The freaking out is a week early.
Everyone will feel better after the upcoming three game winning streak. If not...I'll be near the front of the panic line.

BS.
We lost to a team that basically imploded the week before the game.
I'm not freaking out but I know problems when I see them. A blind man could spot ours.
BS,
We lost to a very good football team. What implosion? A few things in the press. An injury. A tight end who had hardly played leaves the team.
Why is it so freakin difficult for folks to ever give the other guy credit? That was a good football team we played Saturday with three huge playmakers. I would not want to be the Texas Longhorns when they come to Stillwater later this year.
I agree we have problems. But don't give me this implosion crap...you read too many papers and blogs.
Yeah, the difference, though, is that winning took center-stage for Gundy (not that I'm endorsing that). If Parrish Cox doesn't play because of the arrest (which would have happened in Athens), we win that game going away.
Bottom lines...
-We won't see a corner like Cox until Haden.
-We won't see a QB like Robinson until Tebow
-We won't see a RB like Hunter until Dwyer
-We won't see a tackle like Okung or a WR like Dez for the rest of the season.
They are not a super team, but they have some nice pieces. You can win A LOT of games with a lock-down corner, a super-stud WR, a block at Left Tackle, a pretty good RB, and a QB who doesn't make many mistakes and knows the system. You can win A LOT of games that way. Those are key, key positions. We will not play a team the rest of the year (even Florida) that has that kind of talent at those 5 key positiions. Sometimes better teams reveal problems or make you think you've got them when you don't or make them seem bigger.
Had we played Directional State, we would have won 45-7 and thought we didn't have any problems. Now we know. It's up to our guys to fix them for the coots.
Least talented since they went 0-11? I beg to differ. Spurrier has had very good recruiting classes at USC. Talent is not the problem at the 1 position, though they may have some depth problems compared to the rest of the SEC East.
Their defense is good, and need I remind you we recruited the heck out of Cliff Matthews and Geathers? Norwood is a very, very good LB. Their receivers are young, but talented. Their QB is a head case, but he also has some talent. I don't think much of their O-line yet-it's been bad for a few years now.
If the Dawgs sleepwalk through this game we will be 0-2.
If the Dawgs sleepwalk through this game, there will be a shitstorm of epic proportions. They can lose the game as long as they seem to play with effort, but an 0-2 start coupled with lackadaisical play would create a bad, bad situation that would signal the beginning of the end for somebody.
I don't think that will happen, though. That's not worst-case scenario, that's the apocalyptic scenario.
Honestly, I don't see losing a football game as cause for panic in my world.
Life goes on.
You know, I began thinking about what teams on our schedule would actually have won that opener in Stillwater. I came up w/ this:
So. Car - lose big
Ark. - probably lose big
ASU - Get run out of the stadium
LSU - Probably lose. A very bad Washington team just about went toe to toe with them. They still look like us (a little lost) sometimes.
Tenn. - lose
Vandy - lose badly
Florida - wins, but a good game.
Tenn. Tech - forfeits
Auburn - lose handily
UK - lose badly
Tech - lose. Don't think their D could stop Dez and crew.
All I could come up w/ was Florida. And I think we gave OSU as good a game as anyone on our schedule. It's mind-numbing when we make mistakes, but those guys might end up being pretty good.
Not sure we can yet call OSU a very good football team. Who have they beaten? Our excuse last year was that we relied on our stars too much. Now that we lack star power...you can't have it both ways. And when was the last time UGA won a game against a team with superior talent? I like CMR and the class he brings to the program. I also think he and the staff have gotten a little too comfortable.
Tanneyhill was actually a good QB.
He had nothing for an OL and won a few games he shouldn't have won.
He was a cocky SOB but he took a ton of brutal blind side hits and came back firing.
You know that mullet was pulled though the earhole more than a few times under the pile.
The hippie was not the most talented, but was certainly one of the most entertaining players of his day.
Taneyhill is a cocksucker.
Count me in on another "jury is still out" on both UGA and OSU.
IF the revamped D they put in makes a difference and they wind up challenging Texas for the Big 12, we lost to a very good team.
But, perhaps as a result of how bad we looked late last year, I have these nagging feelings that OSU is no better than last year, shot themselves in the foot on offense as much as we stopped them and we might be in trouble.
Hunter and Robinson didn't impress--Okung, Cox, and Bryant were real deal 1st round picks though (well, maybe not Cox--his 40 time will tell the tale there).
SC doesn't have anyone like Cox who can safely lock up with AJ one on one, but I think their front seven can cause a lot more trouble for our line.
It's going to be a big game.
If Tanneyhill was your QB, you'd be 1-0 and he'd be the toast of the state.
It's odd your take from a distance is this is our least talented team in a decade. The SR class is weak, but I'm worried about losing a half dozen players with eligibility remaining to the NFL at the end of the year.
