SEC Power Poll Ballot

The Georgia Sports Blog will again vote in the SEC Power Poll, hosted by Team Speed Kills.  It's the first week of the poll and data is scarce and analysis is shortsighted and myopic.
  1. Florida - Urb and the Gators failed to cover the 63.  Does that mean Meyer has a soul?  Or, was that "tremendous" Charleston Southern defense just that tough?
  2. Alabama- I'm still waiting for them to falter, but they didn't  miss last year's considerable losses off the offensive line.  The D wasn't impenetrable, but it was sufficient.  The O was as methodically brutal and effective as ever.
  3. Ole Miss - Looked average for long stretches of the first half before crushing Memphis in the second half.
  4. LSU - Not sure how Chavis gave up that many yards and points to UW.  Jordan Jefferson looked fine and Terrance Toliver finally lived up to his recruiting hype.  I think LSU is going to be really good this year, but that defense needs to come around.
  5. Georgia - The Dawgs defense was much improved over last year's horrors, but the offense left with Stafford and Moreno.  They don't have to panic just yet, but with that nasty schedule, there needs to be quick improvement.  A road loss to a top 10 team doesn't throw you too far down the poll.
  6. Auburn - With just one game, Chizik is one-fifth of his way to matching his win total at Iowa State.  Might Chizik and the Aubs surprise some folks this year?  Louisiana Tech is a respectable team and the Tigers handled them in the second half.
  7. South Carolina - The Cocks got a win and that's the bottom line, but I told my daughter to leave the room at one point because I didn't want her exposed to such crappy offensive play.  She may not last a quarter of the Georgia game before a permanent ban given the state of those two offenses.
  8. Kentucky - Beat a legit opponent badly behind solid performances from Locke, Cobb and Hartline.
  9. Arkansas - The Hawgs crushed some FCS school and have two weeks to prepare for UGA.  Beat the Dawgs and Arkansas can start thinking big.
  10. Tennessee -Surprise!  I don't think anyone thought Kiffy would lose to Western Whoever, but the margin of victory and Crompton's stat line raised my eyebrows.  Saturday's UCLA game is huge for the Vols.  Win and you've got some real positive energy going to Gainesville.  Lose and you're may be in a fight for bowl eligibility.
  11.  Mississippi State - It is possible that an entire generation of State fans didn't know the Bulldogs could score so many points and remain within the rules of football.
  12. Vanderbilt - Also stomped a FCS school.  Positions 9 through 12 are arbitrary, so sorry Vandy.

Sorry for being picky but Florida's line was 73, not 63.

I still believe that the turnover margin was the biggest factor in the game. Even that up and it's probably an OT game at worst. We will have to create turnovers to beat most of the teams on our schedule. Otherwise, it's going to be ugly.

i agree that the defense showed some marginal improvement (like tackling), but not enough to draw on it as a source of optimism.

without all those osu penalities (especially on 3rd down) our defense looks a lot worse (by which i mean "pretty much the same").

And take away the bogus spot on 4th-and-1, and the penalty on Reshad Jones, and OSU gets held to 10 points.

We can do this all day. The defense played well. Willie Mo had a good gameplan. Give 'em credit.

LSU would have been housed against OSU on Saturday.

ditto anon 12:32.
We completely nullified Hunter and made them beat us down field (if they could). They got one huge throw (and it hurt), but you don't see more than one pitch and catch like that a season. Zac had a few good runs, but the dude has wheels. If not for field position, I don't see them scoring 17. As good as Dez is, we were in his helmet all game.

Anyone who doesn't think the Defense played much better is crazy. Get off of Willie's back right now...you hold that team like we did and you have played well. We need to get turnovers but otherwise there is nothing to bitch about with Willie's guys.

At least we got our leaders on offense. Unlike when we just had two stars.

oh wait....well nvm.

We may have been in Dez Bryant's helmet all game but at the end of the day he had 3 catches, 2 for touchdowns...and we lost by 2 touchdowns.

Guess which SEC head coach had this gem at today's press conference:
"recruits look at former top players to see if they are sitting on the bench the whole game with no receptions or if they are the teams leading receiver…"

Not to pile on, but often times it's the defense's play which influences the offense's penalties. Like when you have a good DLman who owns his opponent, you'll get more holding calls. Or if the OL is nervous because of the competition across the LOS, they'll false start more...

So... I don't agree that you can discount the defensive performance based on OSU's penalties.

Georgia's Offensive Prowess was a lot like this.

Hopefully we learn how to pound the rock.

Has everyone seen why Marlon and Wooten didnt play. Our WR coach FORGOT to get them in the game. Are you kiding me??? How does a Div 1 coach forget something like that. Unbelievable.

They didn't play on purpose.

On Marlon Brown and Rantavious Wooten not playing at Oklahoma State and whether he expects them to play on Saturday...
"I do. The game (last Saturday) was tight. You have a young guy in there that you don't feel like understands it as well as a veteran guy. You kind of look at your veterans and see if they have enough juice in them to keep going. We decided not to play those guys, but we cannot go the season with just four receivers; there is no way, so we have to play those guys.

No, this quote makes it true.

- Marlon Brown confirmed what Michael Moore told me Sunday: Tony Ball said he simply didn't realize Brown and Rantavious Wooten hadn't played against Oklahoma State. “He said the game was moving so fast and he was trying to find out what plays worked and what didn’t work, and he said he just forgot, it slipped his mind,” Brown said.

I honestly don't know how any unkind word can be said about the D's performance against Okie St.

This loss was entirely, 100% on the anemic offense. Nothing like after 1 game being ranked 98th total offense in the nation.

I'm reserving judgment on this team until after the tUSC game.

Mitch,

Is that an indictment of the coach or the player? If you are so forgettable in practice that the coach does not remember you exist during the game, you must not be that big of a deal.

However, I will say I have been amazed at the lack of inserting other players over the years, so your point does not fall on deaf ears with me. I just wonder if it's the coach or the freshman?
