Offer Bumpass!!!!!

Who cares? Go get somebody else. Smart is not the be-all and end-all of defensive coaches.

According to Nick Saban, the same Nick I'm not going to be the head coach at Alabama Saban.

Why can't Kirby come out and say what he is doing?

Is he a mute ?

Kirby could have handled this much better. No sin in not coming, but don't send Suitcase Saban out to make the announcement.

Makes sense for him to stay. Probably got a big raise I don't think a lateral move helps him at all. If Coach Richt stays on the path he's on Smart will be offered the HC job in 2 years.

Thank God! I was really worried this was gonna happen. He is so over blown right now! Pun intended...That would have been such a waste of a lot of money IMO...

I'm getting close to accepting the fact that we are a 2nd rate program with 1st class fans.

Clemson with hotter chicks?
Auburn with better academics?

Sigh.

Yep.

I won't go so far as to say that we got "played" like many in the lunatic fringe are saying right now about KS - I'm sure he was sincerely interested/conflicted.

But, it would also be fair to say that I think he's a bit of a douche right now for putting the University through this mess (and I had hoped him come over to us).

I could be wrong, but it certainly feels like CMR had a short list of candidates that he really liked (Foster, Chavis and Smart) and assumed he could get one of them before January 11.

I hope that we can find a winner in the second group (Diaz, Grantham, Bumpas, Sanders, Air Force DC).

Go Dawgs!

How many more rejections before CMR offers the job back to Willie Martinez? Sheesh! Looks like we'll be waiting til the Dallas Cowboys lose so Todd Grantham can turn us down next. I'm starting to not give a crap now.

This is why women never dump a guy until they already have a replacement. Where do you go after a guy turns down $700K? I can see it now.

Coach Schmoe - you were the 13th person offered the job and accepted less money than others were offered. How can you feel like a valued member of the team coming into that situation?

I don't know that Kirby was or is the perfect guy for the job, but he definitely had a lot of excitement going for the program. As it is, this is the most down I have been since the LSU game.

I'm sure we'll still get a nice DC (and maybe one who turns out to be better for us than Smart would've been), but many of us are going to be disappointed with anyone not named Muschamp at this point (and, no, I can't see why he would come here).

I was wondering how Bobo felt after the announcement of $$$ fir Smart. That's like $400K more than Bobo makes. I still say go for the young buck with something to prove.

Didn't Willie get picked up by Florida or something as a DB coach?

Dubbayoo-

So what you are saying is that someone who hasn't won the Broyles Award, isn't the DC at the reigning MNC, and doesn't have a job at a school currently that can match a $700K offer will feel slighted b/c we give him a 200% raise instead of a 300% raise from his old job?

Pardon me for getting snippy, but that is just silliness.

The point I think folks are missing is this: there are many capable people to fill our DC position, so what if we get the fourth, fifth, or tenth person we ask as long as that person is capable.

Did you guys marry your eight grade sweetheart? Your high school sweetheart? Your college sweetheart?

While I'm sure there are some of you that will say yes and some of you that probably wish you had sealed the deal on Penny Prom Date before you got fat...the majority understand that most selection processes aren't an exact science.

Take for example the personal preferences that could prevent monogamy:
-She likes to live in North Florida
-She is a slut bag that sleeps around and openly talks about leaving you for a man with a bigger schlong or bigger wallet or both
-She likes brown hair and you have blonde
-She's got a man and she's loyal
etc. etc.

The point was never to get X,Y, or Z candidate. The point was to get someone to replace Willie that can get us back to playing SEC defense. Past experience is a safe indicator of future success...but it isn't always the only indicator and sometimes it isn't an indicator at all.

Even if UGA can't get the very best DC, it will still get a very good one.

Guys......Kirby is the only one that I know of that was officially offered the job...calm yourselves. I think Chavis's agent just wanted more money. Show me the offer from another guy and Ill be quiet.

Chill out guys. I'm no old man, but at 38 I have enough wisdom to know that the Georgia Bulldogs will end up with the right man for the job. Kirby was simply not the right guy and him turning down the offer puts us one step closer to the right hire.

Note that I say this b/c we have a damn smart coach coordinating this effort. If Ray Goff were in charge, I'd likely take a different stance.

But the right guy will come along when he's meant to. Not before. I mean, how many of you had heard of BVG prior to 2001?

Anon 3:53, if you think Damon is going to offer Kirby the HC job one day, you have lost your mind, brother. Kirby spoiled a lot of good will in Athens. That's fine. He just should know that every decision has consequences. He was going to burn a bridge w/ Saban or Richt/UGA. He chose to spurn Mama.

That being said, it's ridiculous to think we're second rate or won't succeed. Who knows where all this lands. Bama wiffed on Saban and went back and offered him a boatload. However, I don't feel THAT good about Kirby that he is the ONE hire we HAVE to make. There's lots of good guys out there. No one knew who Bud Foster was 20 years ago. No one knew who BVG was 10 years ago.

Bama LOST in the Indy Bowl to Okla. St. a mere 3 years ago. There is no such thing as 2nd Rate in the top 6 in the SEC. We're all capable of ruling the CFB world with the right staff, players, and chemistry...and luck.
