Where to, Kirby? (Or Maybe, How Much, Kirby?)

Per the Tuscaloosa News, Kirby Smart has been offered the position of defensive coordinator at UGA.  So, Kirby must decide to either come back to his alma mater and make a boatload of money or he can stay on the staff of one of the best coaches in college football as his loyal DC after winning a national championship and rework his contract to get a boatload of money from Bama.  It's nice to be Kirby Smart right now.  Either way, he's about to get PAID.  I doubt Bama lets him go without a counteroffer.

The AJC says no announcement is imminent, according to Claude Felton.

If Smart does comes to UGA, wouldn't this mean that Slive and the SEC officiating crews will "fix it" so that we play Bama for the SEC Championship next year?

Pollack's twitter page says hes coming.

Hope it happens.

I can't imagine that Saban calling UGA a "septic tank" in his presser helped his chances of keeping Smart.

richt is one of the best college coaches in college football too

Tt wasn't long ago tha Mark Richt was referred to as one of the best coaches in the country, and he's only been a HC for a few yrs compared to the likes of Saban and Brown. CMR hasn't forgotten how to coach; he just seemed to have made a poor personnel decision a few yrs ago that has hampered him, his team, and their progress.

If I'm a football coach and I have a chance to prove my mettle by rebuilding a team instead of staying in the short shadow of Nick Saban, I jump at the chance to prove myself somewhere else. Hopefully Kirby is thinking like I am here. I guess time will tell.

The hearsay rumor is roughly 800k for 4 years. And that Alabama won't match, because well they don't have to they have Nick Saban.

Isn't Kirby Smart interviewing for the head coach position at Texas Tech? He'd be more likely to go there because he'd get more money and more power than in either of your two scenarios.

I'm glad to see the offer has been made, now the ball is in his court. Kirby now has to say no to his alma mater. Not much more we can do, back up a truck-load of cash and hope he says yes.
In other news, I love the effort that Fox and the Hounds are giving. I love this bball team!

interesting thoughts from Saban on coaches that make lateral moves...whose "ego" gets in the way?

No GeorgiaSports love for the Basketball team, which kept pace with #3 Kentucky AT Rupp Arena? Plus, the sickest dunk ever!? Come on guys!

hey andy.
they won't fix it so that we play uga. did you not see what we did to fla this year? and remind me again what they did to you? but if by some miracle we do get to play you is there anyway you could wear the black jerseys? those worked out so well for the both of us last time...

hey andy.
why would they rig it so that we play uga? i mean they couldnt have rigged it so that we would have played you this year. did you not see what we did to fla this year? and do i need to remind you what fla did to you? but if by some chance they did rig it so we got to play you, can you do us a favor and wear the black jerseys? i mean those worked out so well for both of us last time...

Rick, Tuberville's already been announced as the new HC at Texas Tech. So no worries there. Although the inevitable tug-of-war between the spread devotees in Lubbock and TTubbs is bound to be hilarious.

Welcome home, Kirby. I hope the combination of money and proving to all the naysayers that you can coach without Saban is enough to get you here. It is somewhat ironic that he was one of the most criticized players while he played at UGA.

How long will it probably take till we hear an official offer has been made

it looks like bama is stepping to the plate. if they do i think it's a lot less likely Smart is the DC at UGA.

Rennie to NFL . . .

Polecat,
Well, he was one of the big reasons we won the WLOCP in '97. 3 INTs or something like that. One was a circus catch.

I'd love to have Smart as the DC at UGA, but I have to wonder why he'd do it if Alabama matches the offer. Stay at 'Bama, and he's a top candidate for a HC job in a couple of years. No question about it, and the risk is minimal, as he's got the system and personnel in place. Go to UGA, and he's taking a big risk. I'd love to see him do it, but I'm not sure it's a smart career move.

If we do land him, though, it speaks tons about CMR, because the main reason I could see for the change would be that he'd rather work for CMR than Saban. For everyone out there who was bashing CMR for not firing Martinez earlier in the season (or even after last season), that's why he didn't do it--keep a reputation as a fair boss, and you'll get the top talent working for you.
