Previewing UGA vs. ULL

Our new Athletic Director stated publicly today that he's a fan of the "Florida model" of scheduling whereby the Gators play 1 tough non-conference game per year in state plus 3 tomato cans (my phrase not his).  With that boring and unambitious glimpse into our season ticket buying future out of the way, I'm sure he'll cherish this Saturday's match-up against Louisiana Lafayette.

The Ragin Cajuns weren't particularly good at anything last year.  They ranked near the bottom of nearly every statistical category including:
Rushing Offense - 71st
Passing Offense - 49th (not bad actually)
Total Offense - 76th
Scoring Offense - 93rd
Sacks Allowed - 14th

Rushing Defense - 99th
Passing Defense - 70th
Total Defense - 92nd
Scoring Defense - 97th

Not shockingly their strongest unit was their punting team.

As Dean Legge pointed out earlier in the week, these guys are going to spread us out running 4 and 5 wide receivers.  Which means we're not going to see much of our base 3-4 in favor of nickle packages like the 4-2-5.  With our personnel, I'd personally prefer to see a 3-3-5 look with both the OLBs staying in the game.  But that's neither here nor there.

On paper, you would think that we'd see a bunch of sacks, but the ULL QB will be coached to get rid of the ball extremely quickly.  For us to get sacks, our CBs are going to have to press at the line of scrimmage and throw off the initial timing of the play.  We haven't played quality press coverage in a very, very long time.  This could create a true test of technique more than a test of actual talent.

Overall, I'm hopefully that we show up to the game awake and motivated for a change.  This will be my 21st year as a season ticket holder in Athens, and I can say with great authority that I probably haven't seen 10 great GATA efforts from our players for games starting at 1:00 pm or earlier.  The 1991 Auburn game stands out in my mind as a solid effort at an early hour, but I'm currently struggling to name another quality effort for an early start.

I will be positively THRILLED if we open this game with the violence and tempo of Richt's earlier years.  We have the physical strength, size and speed to maul the ULL squad, and anything less than 35-7 would be a great disappointment to me.

What are you expecting to see on Saturday?

I am a fan of our new AD for right now. But there are two things I can do without:

1). I don't need to hear lectures from McGarity about discipline in the football program. After our experiences witnessing the Gators the past few years, he would have NO credibility.

2). Don't screw with the 2 OOC BCS opponents and go to that embarrassing Florida schedule. That is a joke and moreso a disgrace. We already play enough garbage games....one is ok but LaLa and Idaho State in the same year sucks. This years home schedule is the pits. And if we opt for the Florida model it would be worse. Please, don't bring that pansy ass crap with you.

What I would LIKE to see and what I EXPECT to see are completely different. I would LIKE to see is a huge ground game (250 + yards w/ zero fumbles), a solid passing game (150+ yards and zero INT's) and a nasty, hungry D with a pick or two and a fumble recovery. Oh yeah, less than 75 total yards in penalties. What I EXPECT to see is a sloppy offense with less than 175 total rushing yards (a fumble) and an unstellar passing preformance with 1 -2 INT's. I expect to see an improved D, however, there will be too many blown assignments. Final score: Dawgs win 34-17 and we are left to worry about the Cocks next week.

So does this mean you're not doing the college football pick'em at Fun Office Pools? If so, I'd love to be part of it again. If I'm missing out, let me know.

Anybody still interested in going to the South Carolina game might want to check out gamecocksonline.com. The last time that I checked, there are still single game tickets available for that game.

Just to show the sign of the economic times, I've lived here 28 years, and this is the first time the Georgia game has ever been available as a single game ticket.

I would like to see a replay of Rambo's hit vs. Auburn on the Jumbotron and the crowd to chant his name again. I've heard he has no recollection of that, which is a shame.

I would like to see Rambo's hit vs Auburn replayed on the Jumbotron and the crowd to repeat the Rambo chant. I understand he has no recollection of that, which is a shame.

I want to see absolute domination in all areas. I know I'm asking a lot, but I don't want to see any mistakes, penalties, fumbles, dropped passes, etc. Execute, execute, execute.

I want to see a QB that is cool and calm. I'm afraid it is going to take a few games for Aaron to settle down. If he presses like he did in the Spring game then we will see some int's. Hopefully he will pick up some of CMR's calm.

I agree with the 1st anon. NO PANSY FLA SCHEDULES. please.

PWD,

Another early game where the DAWGS were fired up was a nooner (or so) at Auburn a few years ago - maybe 2006. The plainsmen were ranked highly, as I recall, and we came in and beat them while they slept.

2006 Auburn was an early game with quality effort.

A look at Florida's trophy case suggests that their model of scheduling works just fine. And, they play 7 homes games each year, which doesn't happen for us nearly enough.

Furthermore, if we weren't hamstrung by the stupid game in Jacksonville every year, we could create a much more balanced OOC schedule.

I agree with McGarity. We can't continue to play 6 home games every other year when all other major programs play 7 or 8. That's a huge disadvantage.

The combination of playing the Fla game in Jax and having a permanent out-of-conference home-and-home opponent (GT) limits what we can do with the schedule.
