Grantham's salary

Someone is going to have to explain what this...
has to do with anything. Frustration with Grantham is one thing. Fine. But his salary is an indication of how good an agent he has and his relative value to UGA at the time of the negotiations.

Fixation with his salary is crazy. Would you be ok with the defense if he made $400K? $100K? 55K?

I wouldn't.

I understand your point but I think it's more about what we ar getting for that price tag. We expect a higher quality defense for what he is paid. At least if he was getting paid 100k you could say you get what you pay for. Right now we can't even say that. I just hope Grantham is not one of those "Richt's way" people that will keep him around a few more years before we hit a critical mass.

But who is 'we'?

TylerDawgden said...

But 'we' as a fan base doesn't pay him. I suppose we who give are nominally shareholders, but the Athletic Association is flush.

I get your point about expectations, but just don't buy the he makes $X, so we are getting screwed.

I can't understand what is so surprising. I had hoped our young D would be able to acclimate more quickly to the scheme, but it hasnt happened, but how was that not expected?. Is that poor coaching? I don't think so. To me, this is like 2010 all over again. Young players tht need game reps to feel confidence in the scheme and their assignments. If you're mad because Grantham can't get these guys up and running quicker, then ok, but I think Grantham is competent and able, but his system requires experience to run effectively. Whether it's overly complex or Grantham isn't the kind of coach that can teach it to almost all new starters quickly, I dont know but that seems to be the reality. either way, we're now griping about a defense that has needed bailing out by the offense in just about every game.

Rather than griping about Grantham, I want to know more about how we're going to fix our special teams.

And let me note, the media likes talking about it as much as fans. That's just jealousy and pettiness.

If it were just youth then why did they underachieve with all veterans last year

Agree 100%. His salary has nothing to do with it. If he made 100k or $3 million. He still sucks this year. And it isn't just youth.

Thank you for saying this! I have often wondered why this even comes up. That is the going rate at this level. If we paid less everyone would scream that GA is too cheap to pay a real coordinator.
IMHO it is just jealousy or envy talking. Every yahoo can coach defense right? "Why should he make that much money coaching when me or my buddy Raymond could do better than this for less". That is the realities of the market.

Maybe that "grown man" Should take a step back and look at himself. In the end Football is still a game.

Well maybe they should take part of his salary and allocate it to the special teams budget. I understand what the market is but is that the market for a crappy DC? Does this mean we have to pay a few million to get a really good DC?

You know what? I totally agree that we need a ST coach. I don't understand why we don't, but I do not think it is because of money. 7 years ago I went to the ladies football camp. I learned that the football team devotes 30 minutes a WEEK to ST practice. After that I was no longer surprised at how our ST break downs. They are not given the instruction. Would I like it to be different? Yes.
Without any inside knowledge, I put that on our AD and administration not allowing additional consultants, or whatever AL calls them, to be hired. Maybe CMR doesn't fight for it or maybe he has given up fighting for it. I don't know.
Why does AL have 9 S&C assistants and we have 1? Do we really think that all they are doing is focusing on S&C. Most of them appear to be former coaches. Hmmmm.
It is frustrating to have a program with this much money be so shortsighted in how they spend it.

Yeah, but what does last year have to do with the status of this year's team? I see what you're saying, and if you're one of those that thinks Grantham isn't the right Defensive coach, BEFORE this season started, then that's fine. But so many are now saying he has to go because he hasn't turned the Defense around yet this year, and I don't think that was a realistic expectation given what we knew starting the season. I'm not an apologist for Grantham as much as I'm just trying to look at the situation objectively... but I don't see what he could do differently to get this group where it needs to be this year. Caveat - I'm sure there are some situational things that have left me scratching my head in a game, but I just don't think it's big picture stuff.

I don't know that we need a dedicated coach, but it's really looking like we don't have a staff that can coach Special Teams. Other teams seem to handle it and it's not as if UGA didn't handle it effectively in the past. But right now we definitely need help there..

I think we do have more than 1 S&C assistant. I think we have a staff of those guys. Probably not as big as Alabama's.. but bigger than 1-2 people.

Also this:

Harris, a former assistant coach at Stanhope Elmore High in Millbrook, is one of nine assistant strength and conditioning coaches employed by the University of Alabama.

How many does UGA have?
Reply

One. The answer is one assistant coach

The entire staff:
Director
Sr Associate Director
Associate Director
Assistant

I actually thought the defense had somewhat improved Saturday and looked better as a whole than they did against SCAR, LSU, and TENN. Yes, LSU's offense is probably better than Mizzou's, but Mizzou's ability to move the ball rivals that of SCAR. I know Mizzou's schedule to this point has been weaker than the Gamecocks, blah blah blah, but the Tigers have talent on offense, and I don't wanna disregard that and just blame the whole thing on Grantham.

Maybe it's just more lowered expectations of the D this year, but I am seeing improvement in pass coverage from our very young secondary, especially since the SCAR game. The pass rush is either boom or bust -- when we penetrate the line we almost always get a sack. However, most of the time QB's have plenty of time to sit in the pocket and throw at will. I agree that the D should be playing better than it has, but I am at least encouraged by the improvement over the course of this season.

Ultimately, do we win if the D plays more lights out instead of so-so on Saturday? Perhaps. But you can't turn the ball over three times in critical situations (backed up on your own side of the field, in the red zone, and then on the first play of what could've been a game-tying drive) and expect to win. Putting that amount of pressure on this young D is unrealistic, especially against an offense that moves the ball like Mizzou. Props to the Tigers for playing mistake free and earning the W against us.

Grantham has done a bad job since he got to Georgia. Heck, you could argue that the defense was better his first two years than it has been last year and so far this season. His unit has always looked underprepared and confused. The reddest of red flags for a coach.
