I'm glad SOMEBODY finally got arrested

In 2009, we had the fewest off field football incidents that I can remember in about 15-20 years, and we had a season completely in the toilet. I think it was "scrambledawg" who called last year, "A Dumpster Fire" of a season. (via the DawgVent)

Last time we had a big armed QB in the news for being a dumbass, we finished #2 in the nation. My conclusion? Viva la Mettenboozer. So I say...Let the Good Times Roll!

Which reminds me....We know about The Cherrishinski and The Knowshon Moreshino. What's Zach's signature drink?

Update -- Suggestions so far for Zach's signature cocktail:Others? I'm currently leaning towards the Mett-hatten.

NCAA Announces: Beer is Bad. Beer Money is Good

There are few things that annoy me like phony righteous indignation. On Thursday, the NCAA met and called for a large reduction in the "embarrassingly prominent" display of beer advertisements during NCAA events.

According to the IndyStar
Earlier this week, the Center for Science in the Public Interest released letters signed by 60 Division I college presidents, 240 athletic directors and 101 football and basketball coaches urging an end to alcohol advertising in college sports.

"Given the persistent problems caused by underage and excessive drinking by college students, much of it in the form of beer, profiting from beer promotion does not coincide with the best interests of higher education, sports or student welfare," said a letter from college presidents, including Butler's Bobby Fong.
After the blustering and finger wagging was finished, the NCAA presidents decided to keep receiving big ass checks from Beer Companies.

Georgia president Michael Adams, chairman of the NCAA's executive committee, said the issue was discussed during the group's meeting Thursday in Indianapolis.

Here's a secret look into Adams' internal monologue before dealing with the issue:
    1. Alcohol is bad for students. They need to drink less. I know what is best for them. I will make it so.

    2. Beer advertising during NCAA sponsored events is unseemly and sends the wrong message to both fans and student-athletes. That's just not cricket my friend.

    3. Today's flight to the NCAA meetings sure was comfortable.

    4. Coach class airline tickets stink.

    5. It's easier to avoid flying coach when your largest booster owns a $700 million liquor distribution company.
Verdict -- Take the cash. Luckily, we won't be thirsty this year in Jacksonville with the Cocktail Party having been renamed and all.

The Bama Bomb Revisited: A rose by any other name...

Matt Tovrog

As discussed here, The Cherrishinski is the Official Beverage/Food of Doom(TM) for the Dawgs. It has been the subject of numerous blog articles, a podcast from the Realist and JMac as well as a profile in the AJC. Backstory for any newbies to this site:
In his book Rammer Jammer Yellow Hammer, Warren St. John talks about traveling with some Alabama fans who invented a drink/popper called the "Bama Bomb." The Bama Bomb consists of cherries marinated in golden grain alcohol for a period of weeks or months.

After the 2005 UT game, Dawgnoxious took a large jar of cherries and marinated them in a Golden Grain/Makers Mark mix. The creation debuted Friday night before the World's Largest Outdoor Cocktail Party. We all made a pact that if Georgia (quarterbacked by Joe T) won the Gator game this hellish creation would forever be known as "The Cherrishinski."
We lost the game, but The Cherrishinski reappeared for the Auburn game that same year. Another loss. JMac and The Realist tempted fate and added it to their tailgate as profiled in the AJC in 2006, and it foreshadowed the debacle at home vs. the Vols. A loss they are unwilling to pin on their fruity friend.

A full jar of Cherrishinskis now sits in the basement of Butts-Mehre as described by Dawgs-N-Suds.

Why bring this up now?
Well, we've dabbled with some quasi similar creations at our tailgate including The Cherry Hoage which seems to vary from week to week in recipe, but somehow involves Makers Mark and Cherries (without the aging process).

And now, TheUnknownStuntman (a regular commenter on this site) has proposed the rebirth of the Cherrishinski as:

"The Knowshon Moreshino."

First, brilliant name. But I wonder if we're tempting fate here? Is the margin of error for the Bama game wide enough to support a venture so close to its ill fated predecessor? With a name that good, we need some kind of drink to go along with it.

Agree? Disagree? Suggested new recipe?

More on the Curse of the Cherrishinski

The Cherrishinski Curse, which was discussed earlier this morning, brought a great comment from an anonymous poster to the blog. The note is below.
Sources close to the program tell me they just put a Cherrishinski machine in the sub-basement of the Butts-Mehre building in time for Halloween.

It is a special section of the museum few people know about, down there next to the toilet. It is open only one day a year and you have to get a special pass to visit.

I happen to be one of the few lucky fans to have visited the area. There are some intersting items on display. They include:

The Harrick test

Two 2002 SEC Championship rings bought off of eBay

A Michael Adams jumpy jump (down in the family friendly area)

A 2006 Sugar Bowl program

A Tony Cole jersey

The lone surviving hedge from the 2000 Tennessee game

A jar of pickle juice

The black stripe

Al Ford's whistle

A thumb cast

Coach Ramsey's ballcap, displayed backwards of course

A Jircuzzi

A pair of black football pants

Bill Goldberg's motivational speech

The fake smoke machine

A 1996 recording of "The Macarena".

Glenn Mason's contract

Hines Ward's wishbone playbook (yes, it's written in crayon)

An "Air Georgia" T-Shirt

A "Join The Goff Team" bumper sticker

J** K***'s canceled check

Herschel's black Trans-Am

Prince Charles' stogie

Ray Goff's shoestring

Coach Dooley's effigy

A few doilies from Effie's

A March 1963 issue of the Saturday Evening Post

...and an "I'm Georgia" towel.
Genius.

well, no damn wonder we lost

Curse of the Cherrishinski

If you saw the front cover of Sunday's AJC, you might have seen the photo above. It shows Matt Tovrog popping a Cherrishinski along with the caption:
"UGA fan Matt Tovrog eats a "Cherrishinski" -- a cherry soaked in grain alcohol. The treat was dubbed by his tailgating friends in honor of UGA quarterback Joe Tereshinski III."
The Cherrishinski was actually invented at a Condo on Amelia Island in October of last year by a UGA Law School Student as was discussed here and here.

Long time readers know that this evil concoction resurfaced at the Auburn game the following week, and Georgia experienced another heart breaking loss. It has been discussed several times on this site over the past year that the Cherrishinski is the Official Beverage/Food of Doom(TM) because of its 0-2 start.

Therefore, I blame Matt Tovrog and his tailgate crew for jinxing the Dawgs. As Dawgnoxious said very, very late Saturday night:
"We should fill Marquis Elmore's car with all the world's Cherrishinskis and drive it off a bridge."

Rammer Jammer Yellow Hammer - Book Update

Over the summer, I told you about Warren St. John's book Rammer Jammer Yellow Hammer.

The book is a must read for College Football fans. St. John wanted to understand *why* people become/are fans. What makes the super fan tick? Why is Warren himself a Bama fan? To get to the bottom of it, he spent the 1999 season travelling with Alabama's RV crowd. At the end of his journey, he basically comes to the conclusion:

I am a fan. I love it, and I don't really care why. But I don't ever want to stop being a fan, and I'm more of a fan today than I was before I started travelling with these other super fans.(paraphrase)

Or said more plainly by Brian Cook at MGoBlog....rather than ask "Why am I a fan?" Ask "WHY NOT?"

In the book he writes about a series of characters that he encounters during his trip including the Bices, their dog Larry and John Ed the Ticket Man. The Bices are best known as creators of the now legendary Bama Bomb -- cherries soaked for a period of weeks or months in Golden Grain. Regular readers of this site know that my own bulldog crew created a disasterous version of this drink known as "The Cherrishinski".

Today's Birmingham News catches up with the Bices, Larry the Dog and John Ed to talk about the way their lives have been affected by the book. It's a really cool article for folks who have already read the book. For those that haven't, maybe it will nudge you along into finally reading it.

If we make the SEC Championship game to face Bama, I'm going to try and meet up with the Bices, share a Bama Bomb and tell them about the near miss of the Cherrishinksi.

If you have no idea what Rammer Jammer means, try this FAQ from Warren's site. In short, it's the single greatest rub it in cheer of all-time.

To hear the Bama crowd at their full throated best belting out the Rammer Jammer cheer, try this video.

To read an outstanding review of the book, check out Brian Cook's take on it. I think it says a lot about the book that a Michigan fan with no affinity towards Bama or the SEC would find that it resonated so well with him.

The Cherrishinski -- The Drink That Almost Was

In his book Rammer Jammer Yellow Hammer, Warren St. John talks about traveling with some Alabama fans who invented a drink/popper called the "Bama Bomb." The Bama Bomb consists of cherries marinated in golden grain alcohol for a period of weeks or months.

After the UT game 3 weeks ago, one of my friends took a large jar of cherries and marinated them in a Golden Grain/Makers Mark mix. The creation debuted Friday night before the World's Largest Outdoor Cocktail Party. We all made a pact that if Georgia won the Gator game this hellish creation would forever be known as "The Cherrishinski."

Alas, the drink may never see the light of day again.
