2007 Recruiting News - Rennie Curran

This struck me as odd, but interesting. In other words, perfect content for blogging.

DawgPost.com reports that there's standout linebacker in the 2007 class from Brookwood High School in Georgia by the name of Rennie Curran.

According to his profile, he's a 5'11" 202 lb Junior. Scout.com's praise for him is fairly high. But that's not what interested me.

He's from Liberia. The native homeland of standout Georgia freshman wide receiver Mohamed Massaquoi.

I read in an interview somewhere that Massaquoi never talks about his Liberian heritage or his family's time there with the media. I don't blame him. After reading the CIA link above and glancing at the Wikipedia entry on Liberia, I wouldn't want to talk about it either.

From reading the interview with Curran, it looks like the shared background with Massaquoi will really help us on the recruiting front. All of this just goes to reinforce that it is indeed a small world.

There's also this guy:

who is MoMAss's cousin and big deal 2007 recruit. He's a fast OLB in Atlanta.

Thanks for the info.

Here's his link in an active fashion.

I do work with plenty of Liberian kids, and given the large population in GA you'll see nothing but more of this in the future. Most Liberians won't possess the academic chops to make it at Tech either--their educations were interrupted by war--so UGA could benefit immensely.

They play on local soccer teams here and regularly thrash spoiled bitches from Cobb and Clayton. Fun to watch for me. They're also all built like brick shithouses, so realize that Monrovia's loss will likely be Athens' gain for a while.

I realize it is just a movie, but have you seen "Lord of War" with Nicholas Cage? Makes Liberia look horrible.

War is terrible thing you ignorant bastards. Have you seen Bagdad lately since shock and awe. Looking at the before and after of Liberia may give you some prospective. Also, there are many Liberians who have great educations, including myself (ivy league grad). From what I've heard about Curran, and from vaguely knowing his family (Mom and sister are Emory grads, Uncle medical doctor, Grandfather United Methodist Bishop, should I go on... he would do just fine at Tech if he wanted to go there.

Anon - you took it the wrong way.

The person who said he works with Liberian kids every day is a friend of mine. He didn't mean the comment in a negative way.

He certainly didn't mean the kids aren't smart. He meant the kids come over at an academic disadvantage vs. american kids age because of the war. Most are very bright. They just have struggles related to language and other issues in the short term.

Curran is a great kid, and UGA is fortunate to have him.

But the guy you're calling "ignorant" works with war torn refugees every day. You're barking up the wrong tree.
