Richt Names Joe T as starter

Image: SI.com

Richt named Joe Tereshinski the starter. Joe Cox is #2. Stafford and Barnes are co-#3. It's the story that everyone is writing about. So there's that.

Joe T is really going to have to step it up if we're going to do better than 8-4, and Matt Stafford is going to have to start throwing the ball to guys on offense if he doesn't want to redshirt.

I think Richt will find that he made a huge tactical error in not naming JTIII coming out of Spring. A 5th year guy SHOULD understand the offense demonstrably better than anyone else, and the way things have panned out, Richt's not announcing until now makes it look like he really wasn't sure that JTIII did. That just doesn't give this fan as much confidence in the starter as it would had he been named in the Spring which gives JTIII that much shorter a leash when it comes to mistakes. That Florida game was so God-awful all the way around, that the stink unfortunately hasn't been easily forgotten.

The other side of that argument says that Richt is in charge of balancing the 4 egos and college careers of these guys, who happen to play the most important position on the field.

It's a tough job and I really feel that even though he had a gut feeling it would be Joe T, he wanted to give the other 3 guys every opportunity to either win the starting job or at least move up the depth chart.

Just walked outside to get the morning paper. I looked up and to my astonishment, the sky was still up there. Whew! Now, time to go to work.

Joe T will do fine i think...he doesnt need to make big plays... he just needs to manage the offense... i think he can do that well enough to keep the job untill tennessee and after that who knows...all he needs to do is exist in the that .3 seconds its going to take him to hand the ball to brown/lumpkin/or ware... and ocassionally throw a pretty little pass to momass let him break a few tackles and take it to the house.. joe t will get his pudding, but only through the talent around him....thats not a knock on him, tom brady manages his offense.... ben roethlisburger manages his...they arnt the most talented QBS...but they dont have to be....cant wait for the game...love all you dawgs out there

I'm a little disappointed because I wanted to see Stafford take the reigns and lead us for 4 straight years.

Will he now redshirt with Cox being #2?

What does this say about Cox, because going into that Florida game last year most said he was the #2 QB and not JoeT but they wanted to save his redshirt?

I put my faith in Comrade Richt. His wisdom will lead us in the glorious revolution, and the Red (and Black) Army will rise victorious.

If Richt will commit to UGA being a run-oriented offense with a feature back that gets most of the carries then we will be fine. The running game will set up the passing game, and the passing game will do enough that other teams do not load the line. (See AU in 2004)

Will this happen? I am not sure that Richt has gotten past his myopic view of himself as an offensive mastermind to stay with something so pedestrian. It seems that when we get a running game going, or a back gets going, either switch the back out or go back to cutesiness. Richt is a very good coach, gets a lot out of most players, is a great representative for UGA, but the playcalling.....hopefully this year will be different.

David Greene wasn't an outstanding quarterback by any mean, but he managed the offense flawlessly and didn't make mistakes. That's all you can ask of your quarterback.

Joe T has a strong arm, good head on his shoulders and knows the offense inside and out. I have no reason to think he won't do well as the quarterback.

And for those who criticize Richt's playcalling ... dude, in five years .... four 10-win seasons, four final rankings in the Top 10, three SEC East titles and two SEC championships. What is there to really get all that upset about?

If Georgia runs the most boring offense in the world, but goes 9-2 or 10-1 ... that's fine by me.

"David Greene wasn't an outstanding quarterback by any mean"

Come on....

Before Donnan was fired he was talking about how Greene was the QB of the future. After watching him play for 4 years, I see why he made such a statement.

To say he was just a solid guy with a good head on his shoulders is ridiculous. And to compare him to JT3 is even more ridiculous.

Bobo talked about how Greene could throw the ball threw a keyhole....I've never heard them comment on JT3 in that manner.

And to say that Richt's offense is the reason the dawgs have had four 10-win seasons, four final rankings in the Top 10, three SEC East titles and two SEC championships....you haven't been watching the Defense.

I give credit to Richt for knowing that Defense is important and hiring good coordinators and getting good recruits but his offense hasn't been stellar.

His offenses at fsu dominated slower defenders. The SEC is full of speed. He's had to adjust and udging from the talent that's been coming in I think we'll see an immediate spike in our offense but it has been a long process.

It also doesn't hurt that Kirby Smart is gone. Worst Running Back Coach Ever.

As for the boring offense, I agree with that. I have no problem with running simple plays if they work.

But any QB can run a simple offense. If we have to run something vanilla so JT3 can play, why don't they run the same vanilla offense with a guy who can actually un-cork a long pass when needed?

David Greene was an accurate quarterback, but he didn't have a strong arm by any means. Greene won games because he was smart, because he was determined and because he didn't make mistakes.

But let's not embrace some revisionist history here and say that he was Peyton Manning-talented.

And there's nothing wrong with that. Greene was an excellent quarterback because he executed the offense flawlessly and kept his teammates calm and focused despite the circumstances of the game. Having Greene on the field was like having an extra coach on the field, and that made the team better.

The fact that he happened to be a pretty good quarterback too only made him that much better.

And I don't think I said Richt's offense was the sole reason Georgia has been so successful. It'd be silly to say that the defense hasn't be crucial to this run. But Richt is still responsible for the defense too, isn't he? I mean head coach is just that, right? Head coach.

"Greene was an excellent quarterback"

...that just sounds a little better.

Nobody's comparing Greene to Manning....I must have misread your original statements. Just seemed like the comparison was JT3 to Greene in the fact that both are simply smart guys that know the system.

Greene not only had great football IQ but he also had a great deal of talent. In my opinion, if JT3 would have been under the same circumstances as Greene, he would not have walked away as the winningest QB in NCAA history.

But that's simply my opinion.

It's great that JT3 is a solid guy who knows the offense, but somewhere along the line, talent prevails. I give him credit for holding the young guns off this long.

And as I said...

"I give credit to Richt for knowing that Defense is important and hiring good coordinators and getting good recruits"

A good Head coach does these things. Richt gets the right people in place - both players and coaches and makes it happen.

He is an excellent Head coach. I wouldn't want anyone else at UGA.
