Top Bowl Games involving Southern Teams

Top story lines from a southern perspective:

National Title Game: OSU vs. Florida
-- The last time Florida played for the national title in the Fiesta Bowl, Nebraska ran for 903 yards and scored roughly 223 points in the game known in some Gainesville circles as "The Fiasco Bowl." I prefer to call it "The Seal Clubbing." Here's hoping that the Gators repeat that showing. Normally, I give the edge to the SEC because of speed. However, OSU had no problem with Texas' speed.

The Gators last visit to Tempe

Sugar Bowl: LSU vs. Notre Dame
-- LSU has the nation's #10 scoring offense, #2 total defense, #4 scoring defense, #3 pass defense, and they are #6 in sacks. Brady Quinn is in deep, deep trouble when LSU plays a glorified home game in the Super Dome. Anyone that hates Notre Dame should enjoy this beat down. Long time Irish fans know what they are getting into. The Cajuns played ND in Shreveport in 1997. Final score...LSU 27 Notre Dame 9. The good news for the Irish? The game is in New Orleans!

LSU's defense will look a lot like this

Cotton Bowl: Auburn vs. Nebraska
-- Auburn hasn't been to the Cotton Bowl since Bo Jackson's final year. Nebraska hasn't been here since Jan. 1, 1980. This is a great clash of historically strong programs. I'm really looking forward it. However, I would have greatly preferred a Nebraska vs. Arkansas match-up. Then we could've gotten some quality, snarky comments about Houston Nutt turning his back on Nebraska a few years ago. Nebraska is 10-1 in their last 11 bowls vs. SEC Teams. So...they ain't skeert.

Chick-Fil-A Bowl: Georgia vs. Virginia Tech
-- Stylistically, VT (14th ranked) plays a physical brand of football that looks like SEC action. The run the ball well, and they play solid defense at an aggressive tempo. Everyone knows what they do on special teams. Right now, they are playing the best ball of anyone in the ACC. The game gives Georgia a chance at closing a shaky season with a great deal of authority. VT hasn't beaten many SEC teams recently. I think their last SEC win was the season opener vs LSU in 2002 -- a 26-8 thrashing in Hokieland. VT hasn't been to the Peach since 1986. UGA hasn't played VT since 1932.

Why don't they call it the Wild BOAR formation?

Capital One Bowl: Arkansas vs. Wisconsin
-- How good is Wisconsin? They really don't have a quality win this year, but they are 11-1 and ranked #5 in the Coaches Poll. Arkansas (#9) could really put a hurting on Wisconsin if their QB can just complete a forward pass. Arkansas has lost two in a row. They need to put that behind them quickly.

Gator Bowl: Georgia Tech vs. West Virginia
-- In last year's Sugar Bowl, WVU shocked UGA with their offensive speed as the 'eers went up 28-0. When they are on, WVU's offense is scary fast. Their biggest enemy offensively is turnovers. On defense, they really can't stop anyone. UGA outscored West Virginia 35-10 to finish the game, and we put up 500+ yards of total offense in storming back. Will GT feel sorry for itself and get steamrolled? Or will they put up a fight. The Yellow Jackets have better linebackers and healthier DTs than UGA had last year. Ultimately, Reggie Ball will probably make WVU's defense look much better than it is.

Tourist Trap in Boise

Boise Bowl: Miami (Fla.) vs. Nevada
-- You can depend on one thing during bowl season. The team that doesn't want to be there always loses. Miami playing a game in a blizzard on the frozen blue tundra of Reykjavik, Idaho in front of 25,000 crazy eskimos. Man, you can't ask for more comedy than that. This is must see TV.

Holiday Bowl: Texas A&M vs. Cal
-- This game is basically the West Coast's answer to the Peach Bowl. Almost always exciting and usually a pretty even pairing. The last time Cal was here, they pouted through Texas Tech kicking their ass up one side and down the other. Jeff Tedford has one impressive win his career. He beat USC in 2003. Otherwise, who has he beaten?

Outback Bowl: Tennessee vs. Penn State
-- Here's a game that sounds better than it will be. Penn State couldn't score in a whore house. I'm expecting a thrashing by the Vols.

Wow, Reykjavik, Idaho. That was a good line, PWD.

The Reykjavik line was good, but the Penn State couldn't score in a whore house was a tad better. I'm glad I read all the way down. Seriously, the CFA bowl may be one of the better games. Two pretty solid teams, bit well coached and both playing much better now than earlier in the season. We can't complain at all.

I'm thrilled to be playing Virginia Tech -- both sides of my family are originally from Virginia and I've got probably dozens of VT grads/fans in my family tree. It would be a very satisfying thing indeed if Georgia were to beat them.
