I can see the guys'point about Knowshon not getting enough carries to get the Heisman. But then I looked over Reggie Bush's Heisman numbers and got to thinking ... is there any chance Knowshon would do kickoff/punt returns? I'm not trying to get the guy killed, but we're losing Mikey Henderson and Thomas Brown. Anyone? (long pause)Anyone?
no way in hell CMR is STUPID enough to risk him in kickoff & punt returns
And could those guys (Dean not included) sound anymore pessimistic and country/redneck? My Gosh, that was painful.
Nothing stupid about putting your best players on special teams.
We put Herschel on kickoff returns at times. Auburn used Caddy Williams on punt returns in big games.
There's a time and a place for everything.
Asher Allen returns kickoffs for us. He's every bit as important to the team as Knowshon. You could argue he's MORE important given that he's our best corner and the gap between his play and the #3 CB who would have to start MIGHT be greater than the gap between KM and Caleb.
If you're going to get hurt, you're going to get hurt.
It's not like we're asking KM to be the wedge buster. Now THAT is a suicide gig that they normally give to lunatic Walk-ons.
Kickoff/punt returns (especially with the new yardage rules) are extremely violent. CMR won't risk it and I agree with that. But KM won't need as many carries if his avg yards per carry are high. I think where he would get robbed is on TD's. Short yardage TD's go to Sutherland (and rightfully so...he always comes through).
But stats don't mean anything if you don't win. Play to win and let the stats and awards work themselves out.
I don't see where we need KM to return kicks just to pad his stats. AA did very well in returning kicks. I would put Ramarcus Brown or the corner back formerly known as Prince (Miller)returning kicks and or punts because of their speed before KM. But that's just me.
I think their comments are dead wrong on carries and not winning the Heisman. Bush won it with Lendale (sp?) White in the same backfield, splitting carries, and a Heisman QB throwing the ball around to great receivers.
KM is one of the most exciting runners I've ever seen. There's just something about how hard he runs that makes watching him a lot of fun. People are going to watch him and talk about him because of that, the same way they did with Bush.
If UGA was a second tier team, I could understand putting Knowshon in creative positions to fill his Heisman resume...
BUT- the Dawgs are a team contending for a national championship this year. Keep giving the ball to Sutherland on short yards if it means we are going to score. Give Caleb his carries if he is going to be a fresh, game changing back.
If Knowshon runs like he did for towards the end of the year, he will have, IMO, the only important criteria for the Heisman Trophy: Best player on the best team.
CMR always puts out explosive players on special teams. Brown, Henderson, Gibson, Damien Gary. With all that KM can do, why not put him back there? I know he could get injured, but he could get injured on every single play and he brings such a psychological element to the game. Every opponent on our schedule knows about #24 and what he can do to them every time he touches the ball.
I could see inserting Knowshon on punt returns because you have to be able to dodge just a couple of guys as soon as you receive the ball. He does that extremely well. But CMR hates kickoff returns because of the violent collisions created by ten gunners going full speed at the returner. He wouldn't catch much heat if Asher Allen (or anyone else besides Stafford) got hurt at pulling this duty. Herschel returned kicks because he was a world-class sprinter and, frankly, was quite imposing coming full speed towards gunners. Knowshon runs hard but will never dish out the punishment Herschel could. Besides, Herschel did manage to dislocate his shoulder against Notre Dame. Any chance it was because of all the punishment he took all year? Who knows. Also, how many kick returns did Herschel take to the house? I don't remember any but I may wrong. IMO, on kick returns, you only need a fast guy who'll hold onto the ball. Any return past the 30 is excellent and anything past that is gravy. We have plenty that can do that without risking KM.
Knowshon did field a punt on G-Day. Just saying.
Wow. Not one word on last weekend's draft. Why?
