ESPN confirms plans to televise Georgia vs. Alabama

More TV / kickoff time news from the SEC Meetings in Destin.
  • Night Game News -- ESPN confirmed to the Athens-Banner Herald that they have used a priority selection to pick the Alabama Crimson Tide vs. the Georgia Bulldogs game in Athens on Sept. 27th (scroll down to bottom of ABH page for info). They have not announced a kickoff time yet. This is something that the Chattanooga Free Press mentioned as a likely scenario last month. I would expect a 7:45 pm kickoff time. Why? Because ESPN doesn't usually televise SEC games before 5:45 pm, and they aren't wasting a priority pick on a start that early. (ht - jimfromduluth)

For my tailgate crew, this would mean a return of Football Armageddon. That's the name for last year's Auburn tailgate extravaganza...a tailgate so over the top that small children sing songs about it, and elderly men write poems about its bourbon fueled awesomeness.

  • Raycom Gets Modern TV Equipment -- Only one day removed from mocking the primitive technology of Raycom (formerly LF Sports), we learn that "All SEC football games and most basketball games on Raycom will be available on HD, according to Jimmy Rayburn, Raycom's vice president of operations." (Same ABH article as above) I hope HD stands for High Definition and not some reference to Hiring Daves. They've got plenty of Dave's already.

Good God, High Def Raycom games?! My life is starting to turn for the good. Next you'll tell me that Tim Tebow's decided to go on his Mormon mission.

I heard Tebow was starting a band called "Four Skins."

They're planning to tour Southeast Asia.

I'm looking foward to some more Britney Spears references this year. Hey, it brought us some good luck last year!

do us bama fans and wear the black jerseys so we can be the team to beat you in them

"do us bama fans and wear the black jerseys so we can be the team to beat you in them"

FAIL.

That's some quality tidbits there PWD. I felt like I was watching the moon landing when watching Raycom on my HD TV.

Unfortunately we'll still have to watch Raycom come back from commercial break midway through the current play going on...oh well, at least it'll look good!

Think the Tennessee game will be at night, too? Two in-conference night games at home in the same season would be a blast.

So, if I understand that Alabama douche correctly, he would like us to do him/her while wearing black jerseys??? and he/she likes bondage?

Seth,

The UT game will be on a CBS double header weekend with games airing at 3:30 and 8:00 pm according to the Chattanooga Free Press.

LSU at Florida is the other big SEC game that day. Defending champs from last 2 years.

I'm skeptical that Mike Adams would let UGA have two games in three weeks at night. I'm also skeptical that CBS could resist showing the LSU/UF game in the later slot.

But it's possible.

The LSU/UF game was broadcast in the same time slot last year and our game with UT preceeded that game at 3:30. So wouldn't it be pretty logical to do the same again this year or would CBS switch time slots?

Gameday in Athens? First time in years? Anyone? Anyone? Far be it from the WWL to jump on a MNC contenders bandwagon at any point early in a season.

Far be it, indeed.

the worst part of games being on Jefferson Pilot/Lincoln Financial/Raycom/whatever, if you live in the greater Columbus area, is that the Vandy-Ole Miss game is invariably going to make you miss the first quarter, give or take, of the CBS SEC game of the week. This is bad enough if it's just a game involving someone besides UGA, but when it's a UGA game, it's enough to make you curse violently.

By the way, is it true that Tebow's band is willing to forego a set fee? I hear they just play for tips.

That's great about raycom in HD, but the channel here in Bham that carries Raycom isn't offered in HD on my cable package (it's Charter cable, and don't get me started). Just because the network will televise in HD doesn't mean you'll get the HD signal on your tube. Thankfully (unlike all school) I don't have to miss the start of the CBS game due to it being on the crappy WB channel.

Just wanted to second Dawgwood's comments on our HD prospects on the WB in Birmingham. I live in the city and have Brighthouse, which is no different. However, HD cameras might also mean better graphics and sound with their conventional broadcast. Please, God, please please... stop the madness with the 80s style sitcom music.

Here's to hoping Raycom (or whatever its called now) doesn't have some lame cockrock Nickelback/Creed wannabe playing on the intro this year.

We can't get too greedy when it comes to Raycom. At least (I'm hoping) the games will no longer look like a high school TV production. Oh and thank you to the Alabama fan for helping us to further make fun of your intelligence by making a post like that. I don't think there is any way that Adams will allow for 2 night games that close to each other. Let's hope College Gameday gets some sense and comes to Athens for at least one of those games.

So will this be the blackout game, or will we use the nuke against Tennessee?

Anonymous said...

i think we use the nuke against UT. It would give us 2 weeks to get ready and 2 weeks for the temps to drop a bit more.

Read what the Raycom official said again "All SEC football games and most basketball games on Raycom will be available on HD

That does not mean the station will broadcast it in HD. I'm hoping my Louisville affiliate will. However, it is a step in the right direction.
