Freshmen, Freshmen, Freshmen

This just sort of hit me. What kind of Top 3 program gets this excited about its freshman class? We're depending on a true freshman kicker, and we're likely going to need one of the freshmen wide receivers to pan out to have a really special season. That's a cold bucket of ice water right there.

Luckily, we have the cast of characters to reduce that risk, but geez. Anyway. Some FR headlines
  • DawgPost.com grades the Freshmen ($) - They admit that it's way too early for this, but what the heck. Carlton Thomas and Blair Walsh both got A+ scores. Several guys scored an A. They're giving much love to Brandon Boykin on their message boards.

  • The Tailbacks - UGASports.com talks about the crowded depth chart and the race to be #2.

  • Wide Receiver Injuries - Three wide outs sat out practice today including Michael Moore, Walter Hill and Israel Troupe. Luckily, AJ Green was back in action. The opportunities for FR playing time are skyrocketing at a position that is slightly less crowded by the day. Banged up bunch. The good news...Tavarres King had a nice day per Coach Richt.

  • AJ Green Media Man Crush - The love continues to pour in. A friend of the DawgNation, Charles Odum, has an AP article about Green's work over the summer to get ready for the season.

  • Michigan Papers didn't get the AJ Green is TEH AWESOMES!1!!!!11! memo - They have Tavarres King listed as the #23 ranked biggest potential impact freshman in the country. Green's not on the list. Little known fact. TK is huge in Michigan and Belgium.

  • Bryce Ros Coverage - UGASports.com catches up with a legacy freshman. Biggest news is here is confirmation that he's not moving to tight end fullback (sorry I typed that really late last night). He's heard nothing on that front.

Paul, I've said since the Sugar Bowl that Blair Walsh is the difference b/t 9-3 and an MNC appearance this season.

Just saying.

"Biggest news is here is confirmation that he's not moving to tight end"

Isnt he with the tight ends already?? I am confused...

Also, dont forget that we are replacing 700+ yards and 12 TDs (10 rush) with a Freshman as well.

Um, the kind of program whose only national title in the last half-century can be directly credited to a freshman?

We'll just have to score TD's instead of so many FG's. Nebraska never needed a FG kicker in their heyday.

Florida's kicker in '06 was ho-ho-ho-horrible. Didn't bother them. Much.

TK is to Belgians what David Hasselhoff is to Germans. He's that huge. And frankly, I think TK is probably a better singer, though I admit he's never had a talking car. Which reminds me, I'm glad Mudcat's car can't talk; if that ride turned snitch, there's no telling how much trouble our players would have been in the last few years.

what was the question again?

I have heard that our kickers have tremendous amounts of talent ( kicking field goals from around 60yds out etc) I'm not worried about them making field goals during the games but having a true freshman out there with the game on the line may cause some problems.

Anon - Yeah. He's a TE all the way.

It was a glaring typo. He's not moving to fullback.

That '80 team was coming off a 6-5 season so it's a bit different.

That said. Your point is well taken.

The only place it worries me is kicker.

Then, I'm not counting on AJ Green to revolutionize the WR position this year.

Also, I'm pretty worried about the kicking game.

I think another way to look at this is, given the way we recruit, if freshmen are going to be playing, they're probably pretty darn good because they are going to have to beat out some dudes that don't exactly have bad resumes themselves.

Obviously, this doesn't hold true for the kicker situation.

The frosh listing is not a ranking. As it states at the top of the article "presented in no particular order". Now I am not sure why he numbered them.

Paul and the rest of you Dawgs,

Don't worry about the Freshmen, especially on offense.

Defense wins Championships and we've got a wicked defense.

All the offense needs to do is be a little consistent keeps turnovers to a minimum.

Almost every team is looking to freshmen. anOSU is hoping for Pryor to be presence on offense, Florida apparantly has a policy that you can only play DB if you ARE a freshman, and USC is always playing some stud freshman at a skill position.

The kicker situation is the norm for college football. These days, you recruit a guy and let him kick 4 years and recruit another one. Auburn and Tennessee had freshman kickers last year, and one of them made all-conference. The Groza award winner last year was a freshman. The position has changed.

The best and worst teams play freshman. The middle-of-the-road teams redshirt a lot and try to build a champion. The worst teams recruit freshman that are better than what they've got on campus. The best teams don't care about the future, so they plug superstar freshmen into a few spots to try ot win a championship. Florida State forgot what a redshirt was back in the '90s because they were trying to win championships every year.

We're getting to that point. As far as depending on a freshman to replace Thomas, that RFr that replaced Danny Ware last year turned out alright.

Go Dawgs!
