1. Georgia - The Dawgs looked good, but still have room for improvement. Losing Jeff Owens for the year leaves the run defense with a huge void. Corvey Irvin needs to step up in the absence of Kade Weston. Knowshon, as usual, looked fantastic.
2. Florida - Hawai'i briefly hung around with the Gators, but eventually provided the resistance of warm jello. I'm still not scarred of that defense.
3. LSU - As expected everything looked strong except the passing game. Just run a bunch of screens and throw to Richard Dickson underneath. A big, strong offensive line will cover up a load of mistakes from the QB. Their defense is still large and angry.
4. Alabama - Was Bama that good or was Clemson simply disinterested and overhyped? It's likely somewhere in the middle. Clemson gave up early and Bama embarrassed them. Bama fans are already making reservations for Miami.
5. Auburn - They have elite talent, but the offense isn't ready to play with the big boys yet. Can anyone throw it effectively back there? Tony Franklin better figure it out because the competition is soon to gradually increase until LSU come to town.
6. Ole Miss - Nutt has found a solid quarterback in Jevan Snead. If they can beat Wake this weekend, the SEC West all of a sudden becomes very interesting.
7. South Carolina - Beat an N.C. State team that appeared to be sleepwalking after their QB was hurt. Smelley looked like the clear starter, but their O line needs work. The defense was solid, but who knows against State, who basically had no appreciable passing game?
8. Tennessee - How did they lose that game? It should have been 21-0, at least, by halftime. UT's big O line didn't live up to the hype against a solid UCLA defense and Crompton looked worse than he did as a redshirt freshman.
9. Kentucky - Beat a bad, bad Louisville team like you're supposed to, complete with a DL romp for a TD.
10. Vanderbilt - Surprised with a big win, but we'll figure them out Thursday.
11. Arkansas - Squeaking by Western Illinois?
12. Mississippi State - Not only did they turn the ball over five times and lose to Louisiana Tech, but they lost their best defensive player in Jamar Chaney. Their offense, even when it is working, has all the excitement of watching a stump grinder work.
