Will Muschamp to Auburn?

The Mobile, Ala. Fox affiliate says they have the story, and that Muschamp will be announced Friday as the head football coach at Auburn. Their web site is current as of 11:30 EST Thursday.

Of all the candidates currently being mentioned / interviewing, he is most logical choice left that might actually fit in Auburn. He's also the only choice that would make me nervous as it would force Mark Richt to move extremely quickly and aggressively to lock Coach Searels up.

To clarify, I'm less worried about Muschamp as a head coach than I am about him going after Searels and being a strong recruiter in Georgia. Hell, we averaged over 40 a game against Muschamp's last 3 defenses (LSU '04, Auburn '06 and Auburn '07). The Xs and Os stuff is less unnerving than the other stuff.

Update: No other reputable site has formally confirmed the story as of 12:30 EST.

Update 2: Phillip Marshall of AuburnUnderCover.com (formerly an Auburn beat writer and an actual journalist) says that it's not Muschamp.

This is a fluid situation.

I'm with PWD- Muschamp only concerns me from a staffing aspect. Like Ive asked before- other than fetch Nick Saban's coffee for a few years and cuss a blue streak, what exactly has he done to merit all this attention?

I think that, philosophically, either Gray Patterson or Brady Hoke fits what Auburn hopes to do very neatly, and either may make a great coach for them one day. But there would be a definite ramp-up period for each, coming into the region with no pre-existing ties.

After about 3 seasons of no more than 8 wins, and a few embarrassing moments....Will will be gone too.

I like what Orson said about this over at EDSBS: "The requirements for publishing a story from a television station in Alabama are evidently lower than that of a blog."

Says a lot about our neighbors across the Chattahoochee.

I think it is going to be Chizik. AU has contacted him (per ISU's AD and the AP). He had success at AU, maybe more than Muschamp and he already has 2 years of HC experience. Granted, he has sucked at ISU, but Ames, Iowa, isn't exactly the cradle of college football either.

Check out ISU AD's comment: Pollard said in a statement. “We saw that same potential in Gene two years ago. He is an outstanding football coach, tremendous recruiter and inspiring leader. When your organization has talented staff members, other schools express interest in their services.”

Something about that says he's not sticking around, but that is just a hunch.
