Toby Jackson to GMC?

UGASports.com is saying that they have confirmed that Toby Jackson, elite defensive end recruit for the Bulldogs, will enroll at Georgia Military College (JUCO) instead of UGA.  This isn't a scoop of their premium content as they have that info in their front page teaser.

DawgPost.com's Chad Simmons also has Toby Jackson news; although, they've asked that more of the details around their story not be posted beyond their site yet.  Regardless, both agree enough for me to be confident that Toby is unlikely to be at UGA in the Fall.

The "why not?" doesn't really matter, and neither have posted on that.  I doubt it's anything sinister beyond the fact that his grades or test scores just aren't good enough.

All that matters is that a position of extreme need in terms of a production, talent and depth upgrade just took a blow.  The mostly injured defensive ends from the 2008 and 2007 recruiting classes will need to have an enormous Fall Camp to help out at this position.

Wood needs to be moved back to DE. Hes a DE not a DT. Also, since we arnt going to play Tripp on the OL, ih would be nice if we moved him to DE too, he cant be any worse than dobbs.

This news does not surprise me. What does surprise/irritate me is that FL fb players posted the worst test scores in the country relative to their fellow underclassmen, and yet still find their way into the school.

It's not like we're recruiting completely different athletes. How is the mullet nation able to get their dunces in school while opt for junior college.

Something smells in Gainesville and it's not Tebow's hair jel.

I don't know much about prep schools and JUCOs, but maybe some of you could help me out.

As I understand it, if you want to go from prep school to D1, you would need to have standardized test scores and a GPA similar to a student going directly from HS to D1.

However, to go from JUCO to D1, you would just need a certain number of hours of college credit and a minimum GPA (with the standardized test scores becoming irrelevant or less relevant).

I would appreciate it if anyone could tell me if this is the case or if I am totally off base.

Thanks

Carter,

I don't know much so this may not help, but I do know that it is easier to transfer into Georgia with 2 years of college classwork under your belt than it is with just one semester (ie Toby's situation). The 2 years of proven college coursework negate the need for a high test score because you've proven you can handle college coursework.

Hopefully Toby will continue to work hard at GMC and still choose to come to Georgia. There's a big risk that he could choose to take a schooly from a school like Florida that dosen't have as high of standards that we do. That would suck royally.

This is purely out of curiosity...

But how does a school like UF, that is ranked higher than we in publications like the US News & World Report, have lower standards than we do?

I'm not saying you're wrong, that just doesn't seem to make much sense.

Because they lower their standards for football players, not the entire student body.

We ALL lower our requirements for football players. GT included. It's just a question of "how much."

UF's "how much" is a little lower than ours.

Miss State, South Carolina and UT's don't have to lower theirs as much because they start so low to start with.

Wasn't it Gerald Riggs who got a diploma at the Chattanooga Mall?

Carter and Anon @ 3:07

Hargrave does not count as anything more than HS. Players go there to take a couple more HS courses in order to get their GPA's and/or test scores high enough to get into college because originally, they didn't qualify. Players at a prep school, like Toby, are essentially a regular recruit out of HS because they have 5 years to play 4 once they enroll at their 4 year college of choice. If he really does end up going the JUCO route (which is looking like a definite possibility unless he gets much improved score on his Feb SAT) then he'll lose some years of eligibility. The most likely scenario is that he plays two seasons at GMC and has years to play two at UGA (although he can redshirt a year there giving him 3 seasons at UGA). Toby is enrolled at GMC now, and if he puts his mind to it, he may be able to graduate in 18 months (although 2 years is the usual length of time). Anyways, if he did graduate in 18 months, he'd only miss one football season at Georgia. If it took him two years, he'd miss two. Hope that helps.

Is he failing to qualify to get into UGA or to get through the NCAA Clearing house?

"Toby is enrolled at GMC now"

Toby has NOT enrolled at GMC, Cuatro.

Cuatro, he's enrolled at a JUCO in Texas.

Hunkering Hank, that does not sound great for him coming back to Athens. I mean, don't we usually encourage guys to go to Milledgeville?

It seems that UGA recommends Hargrave for prep & GMC for JUCO.

With Jackson heading to a Texas JUCO, I wonder if he is moving towards ending his affiliation w/ UGA or if he just doesn't think he is cut out for the military-like lifestyle.

I remember we competed against the likes of USC to get Jackson to originally commit.

Getting Jarvis Jones would be a nice consolation prize, but the popular opinion is that he is UF-bound.

Carter, UGA has somewhat more stringent Juco entrance requirements than some schools. UGA could not take Juco DE Pernell McPhee for that reason.

Hank,

I jumped the gun on GMC as you pointed out. I guess I should have waited to read the rivals post like you did...

Why does somebody have to steal my call sign all the time? I am Hunkering Hank. You are somebody else. Stop using my name.

There is only one Hunkering Hank for this site, and it's a tall man who (offline) works in profanity the way other artists work in oils or clay.

It's his true medium.

Do not impersonate him. It will end badly for you.
