Exactly 20 years ago to the minute, my dad took me to my first Georgia Football game. The Bulldogs faced the Baylor Bears to kick off the start of the Ray Goff Era in Sanford Stadium, and I'm pretty sure we sat in Section 302.
I distinctly remember three things about that game.
- 1. The hugeness of the stadium
2. Calling the Dawgs
3. That Ray apologized for not scoring more points

My first game was against Vandy in 1982. I was only three and don't remember much, but at least I got to see Herschel play. Thank you dad.
My first game in Athens was also against Baylor but in 1985. My Dad took my brother and myself. One of the best memories I have of Georgia football :)
Hell, let's all share our first game stories. My first game was against Georgia Tech in 1993. I was six. Eric Zeier got hurt, and Mike Bobo came in and led the Dawgs to a win. I remember calling the dogs and having one side of the stadium say "georgia" and the other reply back with "Bulldogs."
Great stuff.
anon 1:27,
I was at that Tech game too, but it was 1994.
The first game I remember was around 1990 against Southern Miss when I was about 7.
Wow, Baylor '89. First game of my Senior year at UGA. I'm pretty sure I had a new job at Spanky's and they made me work that game. I promptly quit that job. That was the only home game I missed as a student.
I can't remember my first game ver but I was 12 or 13 and i was hooked. My Dad took me as well and I still have a poster somewhere that I bought there. My son won't remember his first game either as he was about 7 months old.
My first game was the 1967 UGA-Florida in the old Gator Bowl. I went with my Mom and Dad and the parents of my sisters fiance who was playing for the Dawgs. I was 8 years old and I remember being devastated when we lost in the final moments 17-16. A huge brawl broke out after the game between players and I still recall Sandy's mom yelling "Put your helmet on and stop fighting" at her son. After they cleared the brawl I was taken below the stands where I got to meet all the players and Squab Jones gave me a post game team orange juice and a bunch of chin straps and helmet decals. Ihat a great start as a Dawg fan!!
First game was UGA at home verse Kentucky in 2001. The game was a shootout that the Dawgs won. I remember most vividly just how fat Lorenzon was.
Went to games in the womb during the 1980 season and went to a few I don't really remember when I was a kid (mostly Vandy & UK or the patsy we used to schedule before the FL game). I remember the Virginia game in '87 and not liking that they had orange in their uniforms nor that they didn't have anything on their helmets at the time; and I remember wanting my dad to show me who William & Mary ('88) were when we played them.
First one I really remember the whole game for was the '91 Clemson game mostly b/c it was the first BIG game that I got to go to and that the whole stadium (even the Clemson fans) did the Tomahawk Chop that night b/c the Braves won the pennant for the first time that day.
1982 - Georgia at Auburn - 9 years old. Sugar falling from the sky. I sat in the upper deck at Jordan-Hare and yelled "War Turkey!" I just remember leaving the game and there were a million people there. We had no room at our seats. The Auburn faithful tolerated me ok.
That was my first game, too.
I was a freshman that year, walked down from Myers.
First game was vs Georgia Southern in 2008 lol.
Hey give me a break, I had just moved to Athens a month earlier.
Go Dawgs!
My first game was the season opener in 1991 against Western Carolina, I was 9 and went with my Uncle who went to UGA when Herschel played. I remember thinking calling the dogs was the coolest thing ever and distinctly remember asking my Uncle why UGA stopped scoring (I apparently had no concept of sportsmanship). I thought for sure they were going to score 60+. They didn't, but won 48-0.
Tulane, 1985. We won 58 to 3. I seemed like we where scoring at will and I wanted to score 100.
The Dawgs went 7-3-2 that year but still beat the gators 24 to 3.
I was 14 and I remember riding in on south Milledge and students had kegs in what seemed to be every yard. I remember some kids had a keg on the roof of their front porch. Six years later I was living in the same apartment.
Sean-
WCU in 91 was my first game, too. It was Zeier's first game as a Dawg. I was a freshman in high school, went with a friend, his dad and a friend of his dad's. We parked and tailgated at Kappa Sig. My most vivid memory of the day is watching guys pour bourbon into ziploc bags and tape them to their dates' thighs to sneak into the stadium. I knew right then where I wanted to go to school.
Arky State, '01. Dawn of the Richt Era.
Auburn 1969 for me. I was 15. Phil Sullivan of UGA intercepted Pat Sullivan of Auburn in Auburn's win.
We sat in the north upper deck. I worn a tie and a sweater. Dad told me that guys wore ties to college football games. There were a lot of guys wearing ties.
PWD, That was also my very first Georgia Game. I was 4 years old.
3 things I remember.
1. An old man spilling his hot dog all over my dads brand new shoes.
2. Getting a players chin strap after the game.
3. Wearing one of the "ankle wrist bands" that the Dawgs used to wear, on my ankle as well. I got one at picture day from Kevin Maxwell in 89. I still have it!
1969, I was 6, a 17-3 loss to UT in Athens.
Stadium was HUGE to this young Bulldog, and I was so glad to be there...
My first game was Tulane in 1971. I was 14 and our family just moved to Athens.
v cal '81. I remember a cheerleader kissing me on the cheek and leaving lipstick and hanging my head out of the shower curtain while bathing until it wore off. I thought about that memory the first day I stepped on campus in 1990 and still couldn't believe I'd be a Georgia Man and literally got goosebumps.
I went to a few in the 70's when I was 5-6, but the first one I really remember was LSU '87 when I was 14. They had Wendell Davis and Tommy Hodson and handily beat us. I do remember seeing a cheerleader in the program and falling in crush with her. Still remember her name - Natasha Treathaway...or something similar. I started attending UGA in '90, and suffered through the whole Ray Goff era..sigh. At least we had that one win vs. #1 Alabama as a memory though.
My first game in Athens was a Kentucky game in the early 70's. I can't remember any of the details, though. Before that, I used to go to the Tech/Ga freshman game in Atlanta. It was a big deal back then with 40k+ in attendance (more than the maggots can draw now, that's for sure).
One of my first games as a student that stood out was the Dawgs beating LSU in 1979 (a down year otherwise). The stadium was rocking and we stayed in the student section celebrating with the band well after the game was over.
Ahhhh....great times!
I'm a little jealous. I can't remember my first Georgia game. Going to Athens for football games was Something We Always Do, like Thanksgiving dinner or visits from Santa Claus or biannual trips to the beach.
Oh, and I remember that 1985 game against Tulane. It was homecoming my sophomore year. My fraternity's float had some kind of beach theme, I think (maybe all of Homecoming did). Green Wave and all that. Whichever sorority we were paired with had re-written Margaritaville lyrics for a skit. "Wastin away again being a Tulane fan." I don't know why I remember horrible things.
My first game was Tech in 98, the first one we lost in 8 years. Quincy Carter and Joe Hamilton, two stand up citizens. We had 2nd row seats on the 50. I was in 6th grade. I remember walking into the stadium and there was an old tech lady standing at the gate yelling to hell with georgia(Little did I know that she would be the most attractive female in yellow and gold I would ever see...). And for that, I always have, and always will hate Tech the most.
My first game....I sat on the tracks. Please pardon me, I don't remember who we played.
My first game in Athens was in 1968 my freshman year. I had gone to Tech games as a kid since Dad taught ROTC in 61 and 62 and I saw Brian Piccolo at Wake when he taught there in the mid sixties.
Spent 30 years in the Army, retiring in 04 after a tour in Iraq and finally got season tickets in 06. The only thing I really missed for all those years overseas was Georgia Football. Now, I am in section 303 and love it.
My first game was October 1987 against Kentucky for what I think was homecoming. I remember us being behind at halftime and the crowd booing the Dawgs off the field. We ended up winning by 3 or 4.
1981 vs Temple. I was 12. We won like 44-0. Herschel had 4 TDS and then they took him out. What I recall the most about that game was All-American Rex Robinson had graduated but we had some kicks that didn't just make it into the endzone, he was booting them OUT of the endzone. My memory may be hazy but I swear he even cleared the uprights on one kickoff. I remember looking at the program thinking who is this and seeing that it was some Freshman from Redan in Stone Mountain. I always remebered Kevin Butlers name after that game.
Saw us play Memphis State in '82. I was 7. We won 34-3, which was sort of easy to remember because it was Herschel's number. As fate would have it, I married a Memphis State alumna.
Anon @ 5:54: I think you have your games mixed up. We been UT 44-0 in 1981.
How do you all remember this stuff? I cannot remember last week's game yet alone my first Georgia game.
I was a freshman in 1986 and I have been to basically every home game since then.
I am pretty certain I went to couple of games prior to that while I was in high school - do not remember those either.
Man I gotta give up drinking.
My brother had a good friend at UGA who played for Stone Mountain. He said every time they played Redan, for the "pep talk", the Stone Mountain coach would tell the defense if they let Redan get past the 50, "that SOB will kick a field goal, and we will lose the game," so KB was killing teams even back in high school.
Anon 5:58 No, it was Temple for sure as it was hard to get tickets that year but you're right about that score. Just looked it up and it was 49-3.
The UT game I remember UT took the ball down the field the first drive like us vs OSU then either a turnover or missed FG and they never threatned the rest of the game. I remember that because it was the first time I saw the Johhny Majors show after and about the only good thing he had to say was 'that's a good tackle right there' a few times, LOL
The first Georgia game that I remember I was seven years old.
My Dad took me and it was the first time I saw Sanford Stadium in color.
He bought me a program and taught me about the players. Andy Johnson scored a touchdown. It was a good day.
Except for the fact that he bought some floozy he was cheating with. My Mom found out about it and he got really angry. He wasn't just cheating on her but all of us.
He was going to hit her until I stepped in front of him. I told him to leave and that we did not love him.
I am so glad cattle drives now have internet access.
My first game was in 1997 against Kentucky. My friend was about a year out of her master's program and it was homecoming. I had pretty recently moved to Georgia after some time overseas. We sat in the west endzone almost right in the middle. Georgia won 23-13 and I've pretty much been a fan ever since. The next week, I think, Georgia upset Florida.
The next year I was working on a master's at Georgia myself and haven't missed a home game since!
My first date with the woman who became my wife? Georgia v. Kentucky 1999. She cheered louder than me - and still does.
Our son (7 months) just went to his first tailgate this past weekend, but I can't imagine taking him to a game until he's 7 or 8. That seems like the right age where a boy could really be impressed and appreciate being at a game. I think it would be cool - especially after reading some of the great comments here - if he remembers his first game at Sanford Stadium.
Does anyone else keep track of all the games they've been to? I've logged every game, the score, the series record versus that team and the Dawgs record when I see them live (77 wins and 26 losses).
And PWD: My cousin played in that game for Baylor. The first college game I went to was the Bluebonnet Bowl in 1986 (I think): Baylor v. Colorado in Rice Stadium.
(Nice memories anon 6:24!)
My first game was AU '78.
Still have the ticket.
Joe Cribbs ran for what seemed 300 yards. James Brooks ran well too.
Thank goodness Willie McClendon kept us in it and we tied 'em.
We sat in last upper row. the very last. I looked over the ledge at the concrete below.
How AU managed NOT to win the SEC with that three-headed backfield (William Andrews) is beyond me.
Surprised to see so many young bucks on here.
Not too sure when my 1st game was, 79 or 80. I remember tailgating in the lot that was right on the railroad tracks! My parents still have railroad spikes painted red and black with the dates of the game on them.
Best story tailgate ever: Miss. State in Starksville during the Herschel years. I was waiting for Herschel after the game for an autograph. He came out and 100's of people swarmed him. Being a kid I was upset. A minute or two later Dooley and Kevin Butler came out an my brother and I were the only 2 left. As we walked with two great Dawgs to the team bus we passed our tailgate with food back out. Dooley and Butler stopped and ate brownies and cold chicken with all of us. Still have the picture somewhere! What great memories. I am going to call my Dad and thank him now!
I don't remember the year, but my first game was probably a homecoming or something. All the kids in my elementary school 4H (in Columbus) got tickets. We road on a yellow bus to that game. I can't imagine letting my kids go all the way to Athens with out anyone I know. We sat in the bridge endzone on metal bleachers. (Some guy got too many kisses in the bus on the way home - another reason I won't let my kids go that far).
I remember going to my first game with my big brother.
I hope one day my daughter remembers me taking her to her first game.
Thanks for sharing this.
1977. Kentucky. Derrick Ramsey. 33 to nuthin'.
Enough said.
Except, I think it was Homecoming Week.
My first game in Athens was Clemson, 1978. I don't remember much, but my mom likes to tell a funny story from the game. Evidently, we were sitting beside a drunk Clemson fan, and even though I was only 8, I tried to out-yell him.
Ahh, brings a tear to my eyes.
Thanks for the memories, Mom and Dad.
Though my older sister graduated from UGA in 1988, I didn't attend my first game until 11 years later during my first year at UGA. We did live in West Texas after all. It was the season opener against Utah State, 1999.
Worked part time for Bush Patel at Five Points Bottle Shop and rode my Trek bike to the stadium just after kickoff. I'll never forget coming over the hill on Sanford Drive and being waylayed by the roar of the crowd.
Locked the bike up behind the east side of the stadium at Myers Hall (I think that was the dorm) and watched the first half before having to return to work after half. The one thing I'll never forget was how flipping hot it was that afternoon. Students, drunk and
sober, were passing out left and right midway through the second quarter. I actually remember sneaking in two bottles of water, not single-batch bourbon, to combat the heat.
Though I didn't stay for the whole game, it was still one of my most memorable college experiences. That and waking up my college roomate, fully clothed, passed out in the bathtub with the shower turned on full blast.
My first was probably in 1950. The qb was Zeak Brat and Jonny Carson was an end. They didn't win many games during the 50's but I still loved all the games. I went to most all the games from 50 till I moved away from the greatest city on earth in 1972. I was 7 years old in 1950. sicum DAWGS
2004..Jacksonville.
Clemson 1991, the Braves clinch N.L West and the Dawgs defeat #3 Clemson. Quite a magical moment for a seven year-old boy. Hearing the fans yelling in unison "It's great to be a Georgia Bulldog" in unison still brings chills down my spine! I remember me and my dad sitting near the student section and one of the female students giving me a tomahawk to do the chop with.
Clemson, 1991. I remember everyone being amped up about the braves winning. Then I remember my cousin and I throwing our towards the field as UGA clinched the game. We thought we would get in trouble with his parents, but they were just as happy as we were.
throwing our cups - even though those things were like gold then.
Thanks for posting this PWD. I was born and raised in georgia, raised a tarheel, so I have always hated tech. Liked UGA but never attended a game until 1999 vs. uscE. My girlfriend was alumni and a diehard fan. Got to meet UGA VI for his first game, got to stand in the tunnel for opening kicking (beneath scoreboard) from that day forward I was hooked. So this is my 11th season of UGA football and the 9th season (entire richt era) of our same tailgate spot. Oh yea, that girlfriend is now my wife. She still cheers for the dawgs!!! GO DAWGS!!!
Reed is the dorm behind the stadium, isn't it?
Freshman year, 1998. 56-3 against Kent State. Quincy went 40 yards over the top to Champ on the third play.
We put up with a lot of crap in the late 90s and early 00s, didn't we? I like to remember those times whenever I start feeling hopeless about more recent vintages; at least it can't ever be that bad.
Thanks all for sharing good memories.
First game:
1984 vs TECH (the infamous John DUI-berry weekend). We lost and I was dissapointed that I couldn't get autographs (I was 8).
Vivid memories: riding backseat downtown, I saw a Techie band member and gave him the "thumbs down" signal. A serious insult at Rocky Mount Elementary.
Worst part (besides the loss): I've never had seats as good as I had that first game - South Side, 30 rows up about the 35 yard line towards the East endzone. Damn you GEEF!
1st game I really watched: 1994 vs. Tennessee (freshman). We lost again so I was disappointed I couldn't get autographs (kidding). Was Helton QB that game? Both sides of our lines were so much smaller than theres. Dawg pups should watch line play from any UGA/UT game from the 90's to see how far our program has come.
Vivid memory: the gate was accepting cash in lieu of tix so there had be 90K in Sanford (this is when it held 86K). I was lower student section and surprised by the number of fights (amongst dawgs) and amount of alcohol (huge bottles, not just flasks).
Go you silver britches!
My first Georgia game was the 1990 Tech game. I went to this tailgate with some old ladies my mom worked with. It was cold and I remember one of them talking to me, unaware that she had a cascade of snot hanging from her nose. Later, Georgia would build a 9-0 lead only to eventually be slayed 40-23. I'm amazed I ever wanted to go back.
Haven't seen my first game mentioned, 1977 vs Clemscum. It turned out to be the second time ever Clemscum had won in Athens. They dominated but were only leading 7-0 late in the game. We threw a long pass, scored, and decided to go for 2. I don't remember exactly for what (maybe delay of game) but we were penalized 5 yards and Dooley decided to go ahead and go for 2 anyway after the penalty. Pass was incomplete and we lost 7-6. When asked after the game why he want for 2 after the penalty, Dooley said something to the effect that we had not played well enough to deserve to win, so since we had a chance to win, he felt like he needed to take the chance.
That Baylor game in 89 was my first two, I was nine years old and went with my dad and grandad.
Two things I remember:
How big the stadium was and tailgating on south campus eating some KFC that we picked up leaving Macon early that morning.
The Tech game in Atlanta in 1967. Ronnie Jenkins running the ball up the middle.
Programs were $2 in 1989?
