Rex Robinson and the AJC on special teams

I agree with Rex Robinson and Bill King. At this point, it's not the direction of the kick. It's the coverage unit that's the problem. Walsh kicked it 68 yards against LSU on the final kick. It came back 49 yards. Our guys weren't even in the picture frame when the returner caught the ball.

We have got to sort out the coverage issues and stop blaming the kickers.

I'm not defending Richt on this one (especially since I happen to agree with everyone else that coverage is the problem) ,but it would be nice to see how much hangtime Walsh is getting compared to other kickers. I, too, have noticed that other teams' coverage units seem to be in the camera shot almost as soon as the kick is fielded. Could it be the "ups" that Richt was so worried about with Butler earlier in the season? Does that apply in the same way to kickoffs as it does to punts?

Why are we still talking about this after a year-and-a-half???

peacedog said...

But what to do? This feels like one of those things that's not easy to fix in the season, at least when the approach is so broken. Fabris should be removed from Kickoff duty in the off-season, IMO. I'm ok with Richt designating, but this has been a problem for too long.

Trey said...

Did no one else notice that directional kicking can work? It's what LSU did to us the whole game, and when you can get that kind of hang time from the kick, it works well.

matt b. said...

Why is Richt always making excuses???

Do you think if something is a problem, Nick Saban would blame the wind or find some other half-ass way out of holding someone accountable?

St. Nick doesn't have to make excuses, because he makes things right. He doesn't blame his kicker when it's apparent to all what the problem is.

What is happening to Mark Richt?

Tired said...

Like I said last week before the LSU game, I hope we lose this one as well. Richt is not reacting to the big problem here. If he doesn't make serious changes - then he needs to leave.

Yes. See: Waaah, we only lost to Utah because of Andreeeeee, waaaaah

You're always free to, as well.

No, really. Find another team. Trek, Florida, whatever, who cares. Stop associating yourself with the University of Georgia immediately.

And don't dare come back when the 2010 edition of the Dawgs comes out gangbusters. (Which they will...check out that talent, check out that schedule. Swoon.) You won't be, and shouldn't be, welcomed back.

Exhausted said...

lol i called it!

Ooh he called you a Gator fan. OOOOH!

matt b. said...

Anon 1:06. Would you rather be held accountable to Saban or Richt?

It's like being whipped vs being grounded. You learn by being whipped.

Richt would cut off your allowance and may you acolyte.

Tired said...

Naked Frank Beamer:

Shut up.

"gangbusters next year...talent" We already have all the talent in the world and still can't win the big games. You're a moron.

Naked Frank Beamer said...

Here's a question for the DumbDawgs: Once we fire Richt and tell his recruits to hit the bricks, thus assuring Georgia of a last-place finish in the SEC East for *at least* two years, who do you geniuses think we should hire, huh? Huh? Who's it gonna be? Who's gonna completely rebuild this program that we've willingly torn down to appease some mensas on the DawgVent? Huh?

Because all I'm hearing from the DumbDawgs is this: VanGorder (haha), Gruden (hahaha), DAVID POLLACK (BAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHA!!!!). In other words, fail, fail, epic fail. Try harder at thinking, DumbDawgs!

Naked Frank Beamer said...

"All the talent in the world" is a bunch of underclassmen, smart guy.

Again, you're welcome to leave. Seriously. Because when you're advocating firing Mark Richt after the wins, the Top-10s, the SEC championships, etc., just because you're huffy about a transitional season, you have no business calling yourself a fan. None. You're advocating for the willful termination of the Georgia program as a viable anything for the next half-decade. Because we lost to LSU on a (bogus) TD.

Again: You will not be welcome back.

Tired said...

Why are you being so mean to me? Mommy!!!!!!!

Nobody who calls themselves Naked Frank Beamer should be mentioning the word fail, let alone epic fail.

Be like Frank, just enjoy the 7 or 8 win season and move on! We'll be awesome next year!!!

And oh yes, SWOON over the 2010 schedule! It's too much to ask to be able to beat the big boys, so let's just wait for seasons where we don't have to play as many good teams. That's a great philosophy! You're a super cool, super smart, super fan!

Moron.

Brains, DumbDawgs. Use 'em.

"Be like Frank, just enjoy the 7 or 8 win season and move on! We'll be awesome next year!!!"

Yep, that's what I'm doing. What I did in 2006-2007, too.

Again, you're free to leave. Leave. Or tell us who we should hire to clean up the mess you want us to make out of this program. VanGorder, baby!

"so let's just wait for seasons where we don't have to play as many good teams. That's a great philosophy! You're a super cool, super smart, super fan!"

Naked Frank Beamer loves it, baby! DumbDawgs *support* Jerm Foley doing this, but talk bad about Damon doing it in 2010! LOL! Hit the bricks, DumbDawgs.

Gator fan here - I have to agree with Tired. You have all the weapons on both sides of the ball but just can't get the job done. Coaching is to blame for that. We realized Zook couldn't handle it and made some changes and now look at us.

Tired - you should run for President, you are the only reasonable Georgia fan I know.

GatorNation:

You make a valid point, most people agree - but from living in Clemson I can tell you that a coach firing (good or bad) does not always have positive results on things like recruiting...

oh, and Gators suck; thanks!

Naked Beamer's blog is one of the funniest things I've read in a while. Terrible language, disrespectful tone, politically incorrect - GREAT!

However, I disagree with the whole "we'll be good next year so STFU about this transitional year." There is some truth to his logic, but the problem is that said logic omits the fact that we've got too much experienced talent to be lagging in certain areas. PLUS, the same problems keep resurfacing each and every year. PLUS, PLUS, hearing the bullshit excuses only makes matters worse.

Is there anything more frustrating than having an authority figure who makes alot of dough constantly make excuses for shit you KNOW is correctable?

Damn Mark - I guess OCS didn't work out well did it?

A wise old Dawg once told me that UGA should win or be in serious contention to win the SEC once every 4 years. That's traditionally a very good rate. However - he also said that this didn't mean you sucked the other 3.
This team/program has too much good shit going for it to not win 9-10 games EVERY YEAR.

In other words, an 8-win season should be an anomoly. Which is precise testiment to our success under Richt. 8 wins is an anomoly and 9-10 is the norm.

But the problem are these repetitive problems and the piss-poor excuses only exacerbate the fan's frustration.

Now STFU and GATA this weekend.

UGA fans sucks ass. you guys can never agree on anything. Tired is the only on with a brain!!!!! He realizes that almost is never good enough and the past does mean shit in the SEC. ITs what are you going to do this year. If you people dont wake up and do something about a sub-par coaching staff you will fall to ranks of Vandy or Kentucky!!!!

I hope Richt is there forever so that UGA can never win a NC.

WAR EAGLE!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

War Tiger Eagle speaking of national titles how are all yours working out?

WAR EAGLE said...

oh my....let me guess....Hershel walker is the greatest player of all time. IN the 80's UGA was the greatest. Once again stop living in the past. lets talk about this year. We are are going to pick apart you DBs and score 50 pts or more and you floundering offense a.k.a the record holder for 3rd and long without a converting isnt going to score shit. See the differnce is at least Auburn can realize when a good coach has gone past his prime. Tuberville ( coach with the best record against ranked teams this century in the SEC) was let go because he didnt produce. I played for Tuberville on the undefeated 04-05 team. I like tub but we needed new blood...Look was Chizik has done in just a few months and you want to argue about the past??? that is so UGA Fan like....anytime someone says something critical about your team all you guys do is deflect like children...We'll here's a deflection for you UGA fans. Auburn will win a NC before you beat Florida more that once a decade. BIATCH!!!!!!!!!!!!

Sam said...

If the kicker can boot it 5 or more yards into the end zone, it is not going to come out very often.

Sam said...

War Eagle, sorry but there is no defense other than being delusional in the firing of Tuberville.

With Saban around at Bama, I do not see a national title coming your way.

SCdawg said...

richt is a great head coach, and i could never wish for my dawgs to lose. BUT i would trade richt for saban in a NY minute. saban must have everything perfect, including his defense. martinez will be richts downfall unless he will show some backbone and let his bff go.

for all you saying we want van gorder, of course we do if it was possible, but its not. and we know that. we just want anyone but martinez. kirby smart, charlie strong, ellis johnson, heck even ole tubs. just anyone but willie.

naked douche and war eagle,
go F*CK YOURSELF. take your idiot comments off this blog.

WAR EAGLE said...

Once again Deflection. Lets live in the pass i guess. We beat our rival Bama 6 years in a row. You have beaten you rival Florida what like 3 time in 21 years or something. So with Saban at Bama we have no chance of a NC is like saying With Saban, Miles, and Meyer you have no chance either. That is such an ignorant statement its funny. It takes a special team to have so much talent and do so little with it. The bad thing is with Kiffin at TN now you have Florida and TN that will consistently kick your ass up and down the field. But its cool i'm sure you will back door into the SEC championship soon because someone will help you and beat FL but then you will go on probation again for selling your rings. UGA is like ALLIED WASTE (Picking up all the trash in the state of GA)!!!!!!!!! EAT IT!!!

fuelk2 said...

Back to the original topic.

I have summarized what I believe Richt was thinking below. Could he really say that? Would that really give any of us satisfaction? Blair's been great on FGs, but he really is part of the problem on kickoffs (key word= part). I think Urban Meyer and David Perno are shining examples of throwing players under the bus and both irritate me when they do that.

Richt's true thoughts: "We'd like to execute directional kickoffs. They're very effective when kicked high and relatively accurately. Instead our boy ripped a line drive right down the middle of the field, which gave the returner, one of the fastest guys in the SEC to run at a bunch of walk-ons. I'd love to let somebody else kick off, but frankly the new guy was sort of a wasted scholly. Oh well, that's why they give you 85. I have no idea why we have walk-ons and QBs on the coverage team, but I am steadfastly for it. They suck, though. On a separate notion, I have no idea why Fabris would try to cover that kick from a huddle. One of those walk-ons didn't even run to the correct side of the ball. I slapped Fabris in the face after the game. Anyway, I figure not being able to cover kicks is just one of those things we have to deal with."

See, does the truth really make anyone feel good? There are problems top to bottom on kickoff coverage.

"BUT i would trade richt for saban in a NY minute. saban must have everything perfect"

Mark Richt won 10+ games in 2002, 2003, 2004, and 2005. Won 10+ again in 2007 and 2008.

Number of times "Lousiana-Monroe" Saban has won 10+ twice in a row: ZERO

Also, never forget: Richt 45, Saban 16.

"Lets live in the pass i guess. We beat our rival Bama 6 years in a row."

Hey, pot. This is the kettle. You're black. That string against Bama is over and the coach who put you there is gone. Time to start living in the now.

SCdawg said...

saban also has a nc and richt doesnt.

also, never forget in 2003 17-10 and 34-13.

he is 2-1 against richt so what is your point?

If you want Georgia to lose, you should be kicked out of the stadium and your tickets revoked and your donation given to Tech and be driven to Tech games and forced to wear yellow and bob up and down during the Budweiser song.

Just so you can look smarter to some other people on a blog or message board where people only know you as "Paul Westerdawg" or something equally ridiculous??????

I want Georgia to win at everything. We went thru this just last year with Felton. Did it make things easier when we lost a bunch to fire him and make a change? Yes. But it aint all about him. There's a bunch of 20 year old kids wearing jerseys that say Georgia on them. Do they suck? Yes, sometimes. But I don't wish ill on them. They make me cuss and throw up some times. But just by suiting up they've done a hell of a lot more at UGA than 99% of you have ever done.

Anonymous said...

wareagle,

We may have only beaten our rival in Gainesville twice in the last 5 years, but we have beaten our rival in Auburn 3 in a row and 5 of 8.

And one other thing:
Oklahoma State, S.Carolina, Arkansas, Arizona State, LSU

La Tech, Miss State, WVU, Ball State and Tennessee.

Nuff said.

Rick said...

Who the hell has Auburn played? Oh yeah, nobody.

We will destroy UT tomorrow and then you can shove your bragging rights right up your ass until you've played somebody worth mentioning.
But try to stay ranked come November 14th so that we can embarrass you on our home field. Thank you for your cooperation.

Anonymous said...

Even if that guy hadn't said he played for auburn, you sure could tell he went there, looking at that spelling and grammar.

Rick said...

Hey moron, you're the one gloating, not the rest of us. The point is that you shouldn't brag if you haven't played anyone. I wouldn't expect someone who went to Auburn to understand that though, so I forgive you.

Oh and don't mention UGA losign to ranked teams if you haven't even played one yet. I know, another complex concept for you, but it's ok you can go get a tutor to explain it to you.

Anonymous said...

"he is 2-1 against richt so what is your point?"

Not to halt the Saban Love Fest, but Nick's actually 3-2 against Richt. That 45-16 2004 game is still the golden standard for beatdowns I've seen in a long time, though.

Also: Nick won the MNC in 2003 when his team lost one game, to Florida. Richt had only one loss in 2002, also to Florida. Only it wasn't at home, and it wasn't by double digits.

Them's the breaks. 2002 Georgia was just as good (though probably better) than 2003 LSU. But to say Nick's a better coach because he got his awesome season when no one else was undefeated is, well, a little silly.

SCdawg said...

my bad i wasnt talkin about while he was at bama...

the main thing is that his teams dont choke and he hardly ever gets outcoached. yeah the la monroe deal was bad but thats one game. uga has lost quite a few under richt that are complete chokes on the defensive side of the ball. wvu 05, tenn 06, tech 08 are a few of the defensive chokes. they just embarrass us and so far, richt isnt willing to make a necessary DC change. saban wouldve had martinez gone 2 yrs ago.e

Anonymous said...

"the main thing is that his teams dont choke"

Sure they do. LSU choked against Arkansas in 2002. They choked against Auburn, Georgia, AND freaking Iowa in 2004. Bama choked against LSU and Georgia in 2007. Choked against the Utes in 2008.

"he hardly ever gets outcoached. yeah the la monroe deal was bad but thats one game."

When Richt is losing to non-BCS conference teams, then we can talk. Don't forget St. Saban also has a loss to UAB on his official record, too.

Face it- Richt ate his coaching for breakfast in 2004. That was one of the worst gameplans I've ever seen. Worse than anything Willie's ever done.
