The Bowl Picture

Since every Georgia fan I know is either indifferent to the Tech game, conceding defeat, or actively cheering for Tech to score in economy size bunches so the defensive staff can be lit ablaze at midfield after the game, I'm going to take a glance at the bowl picture.  If I assume death by a thousand stings Saturday, it looks like the possibilities are Memphis, Shreveport, or Birmingham.  Nashville could be a possibility, but only if we beat Tech.  Assuming South Carolina and Auburn lose this weekend, I think they are our primary competition.
Here's how the top bowls shake out: BCS - Gators and Tide, Capital One - Ole Miss, Cotton - winner of LSU and Arkansas, Outback - winner of UK and UT, Peach - loser of LSU and Arkansas, Music City - loser of UT and UK.  That leaves Auburn, the Dawgs, and the Cocks to fight it out for the lower bowls.
If I'm the Liberty Bowl, I can select a team with a new coach, a relatively energized fanbase, and a team with the closest geographic proximity (but still requires a hotel stay) in Auburn.  I'd get a Gus Malzahn's offense against Houston, a potential offensive explosion, to draw a TV crowd.  Imagine our secondary against the Cougars.  I think I'd take Auburn in that game before I'd select Georgia, despite the head-to-head win.
Which leaves the Indy Bowl with the next pick.  If it's between us and Carolina, my guess is that we'd get the edge.  We beat them in September, they're going to likely be riding a four game losing streak, and they have been to Shreveport recently.  Plus, look at the Big 12 candidates the Indy Bowl might select.  A UGA-Oklahoma game would draw a nice TV audience, even though both teams have fallen on hard times.  I'd think a Georgia-A&M game would draw as well, just based on the name value of the two teams.  Those Big 12 teams should bring a crowd and offset the attendence problems created by the distance factor for Georgia fans.
The only real threat to this is if Oklahoma State ends up in the BCS.  Then Iowa State likely comes into play for Shreveport.  An Auburn vs. Iowa State game would have serious appeal because of Gene Chizick.  Maybe the SEC and the Liberty allow that game and Georgia goes to Memphis instead of Auburn.
So, is a match up with Oklahoma or Texas A&M exciting enough to get you to buy a ticket?

We could play Jesus and the disciples in Shreveport and I wouldn't go. This administration and team doesn't deserve my hard earned money.

I wonder who would be favored in that matchup, Anon 12:37. Could Judas cover A.J. Green?

Anonymous said...

Nope.

These "kids" just plain suck. And the coaching is even worse.

I'll keep my money (just like i might my $4,500 next year).

That is going to be the key. All these bowls know that UGA is not going to bring a crowd. Hell, it may only bring the family members. Birmingham is close enough that UGA fans nay decide to driver over to catch a last football game of the season on a whim.

If they beat Tech, I am guessing Nashville is a good option as it is also within whim driving distance.

No way. They would have to put Jesus on him and hope for the best.

dude are you serious right now?? the post overall isnt bad, i just have a major problem with the first part of it. Tech is still a big game, and I don't know a single georgia bulldog fan who is cheering for tech. you sound like a little b*tch with those comments, if your going to overlook our biggest rival then you dont need to be responsible for posting on this blog. You are a voice for the bulldog nation, you should be hyping the game as much as possible instead of downplaying/overlooking it. We have a chance to beat a highly ranked tech team and at the least regain bragging rights, but more than that if we beat tech they could easily go on a 3 game losing streak to end the year.. clemson is playing well and could very well beat them, and also whatever good team they play in a bowl has a shot at beating them..

if you are indifferent to the tech game then you are not a dawg, im sick of the fair weather fans. its 1 thing to be less than hyped for a kentucky team-- they are not a rival-- (but by the way, those same people who were indifferent heading into the game, were not so nuetral after the loss)-- but no one should be indifferent to our biggest rivals the nerds.. if we lose again this year then we have to hear about it all year long.. 2 years in a row.. no thank you! we need to get behind the dawgs and hope we pull the upset.. and you quinton need to get your sh*t together..

Yes this has been a disappointing year, Yes i am calling for coaching changes. but i dont care if we are 0-11 no one should ever over-look tech, a win wont save the season but it would at least give us something to cheer about. and most importantly shut up tech fans

Music City wants South Carolina and the Bowden vs. Spurrier rematch.

South Carolina has never played in the Music City Bowl and it would be a first for their fans.

Also, Georgia has already played a game in Nashville this year.

Thanks, Gruden. I always appreciate a passionate response. I was referring to a comment posted on this site yesterday.

I am indeed cheering for Georgia, as always. I'll even attend the bowl game. Will you?

As a Tech fan, I must say that I'm really disappointed by this statement. I usually try to be classy, but if we win this year I will make sure to rub it in well enough to where you will care about winning or losing next year.

Are y'all really that fairwheather? I know all mutts can't feel this way. I can only hope that the players have conceded defeat as well.

Tech IS our bowl game. I would think the coaches are pounding this in the players' heads already. No matter how bad the team is, though, I wouldn't pull for Tech if I was on the team plane, 35,000 feet up and all engines just went out...

Tech fan @ 2:16 here.

Thank you Dawg19.

How about people lay off the messenger? Geez. I don't know Quinton and don't really care what people comment generally, but the guy was just saying what he'd read and heard, and if the rest of you aren't hearing some of those same things, you aren't talking to many people.

Also, anon 12:44, why don't you just keep your money, big time. The rest of us at that level will be happy to take your seats and invite people who don't type things about our players sucking. You suck, douche. A $4,500 donation every year isn't close to being enough to brag about.

And finally, anon 2:16, your team won last year and you might win this year, but until you're a consistent winner you really can't do a lot of effective rubbing it in. Your program, notwithstanding a championship every now and then (read "every 20 years"), is a joke. Putting seasons like yours together on a consistent basis isn't easy, so I suspect your mouth-running will be pretty short-lived. Have a good day, though.

Yes quinton, i will be at whatever bowl game we play at. I havent missed a home game since i was 16, have made it to most away games since then too, been to every post regular season game since 17(SECCG's and bowls)..

and if you are hearing that people dont care then your next post should be on how embarrassing it is that some of our so called fans actually have this mindset.. We are playing tech, its important!

and while i am worked up-- lets post about how embarrassing it is for our fans to be leaving the game while the outcome still hangs in the balance-- TWICE this year- against LSU and KY.. against lsu many people were already headed towards the gate and didnt even see the play AJ scored on.. and in the KY game fans were leaving when we were getting the ball back around the 50 with 2:00 minutes to go..

our fans have been embarrassing this year.

the teams play has been unacceptable, but so has our fan's behavior in many, many ways.

That's what I asked in the post, Gruden. Hats off to your loyalty.

I would post those thoughts, but anytime I post something negative, whether it be about our team or fans, people want to "fire" me from a job I don't get paid for.

Q- I don't see the Chick Fil-A/Peach taking Arkansas. Too far for their fans to travel coming off a loss to a rival to end their season. Seriously, Memphis, Nashville or Shreveport would be better for them. I think proximity will play a bigger role in bowl selections this year than ever before among the 6-7 win teams. I could see the CFA taking the loser of UT and UK before taking a western division team of similar caliber. As for UGA, anything from CFA to Papa Johns is still a possibility depending on the outcome of this weekend's games.

no, i've seen some of the fire quinton comments and i think the general negativity towards your posts has to do with the general obviousness(if thats a word).. for the most part they seem to be short and saying things everyone already knows, but this post today is pretty in-depth and really provides insight on various bowl options. I dont think anyone is going to call for you to be fired if you point out the negative things our fan base has exhibitted, i think most fans would agree with my points about our collective behavior.

btw i apologize for the fire quinton beside my name above, i realized after i posted that it was a dumb thing to put on here.. thats why i changed it to suspend, haha its not as harsh..

but i do plan on being harsh on anyone over-looking georgia tech.

sorry if i scattered my idea's and didnt present them in a clear matter, i have alot going on and dont have time to make sure its perfect

Did you forget to mention the sugar bowl? I would assume the loser goes there and the LSU ARK winner to the capital one bowl.....

Quinton I think you need to stay away from hyperbole as a writing tool.

On the off chance that you ACTUALLY don't know any UGA fans rooting for the Dawgs to win, then I imagine you know some pretty shitty Dawg fans.

I think the Papa johns Bowl would be the best. Those of us not able to go to the bowl game could support the team by watching the game and eating Papa John"s pizza!

It's a favorite at our house.

I also think that B'ham is close enough for spur of the moment attendance. IMHO more people would attend the bowl game if we were debuting some new coaches. (hint. hint)

Uganewt said...

Like PatinDC said, I'm most likely to go to the Papa bowl if we end up there b/c I could drive over there morning of and probably pick up a ticket cheap. Young kids make home games tough to get to let alone trips to Shreveport.

If it's UGA/Oklahoma, it should be re-named the WTF Bowl.

I don't expect it to happen, but I'm pretty sure that beating Tech on Saturday could make me start to forget a lot of the other crap that's happened this season.

But I'm not 100 percent sure, so I'd really like it to happen so I can find out.

Anonymous said...

You seem to have forgotten about the PapaJohns.com Bowl.

I think that if Oklahoma State backs into a BCS game, Georgia could easily tumble into the PapaJohns.com Bowl against the likes of Connecticut.

Anonymous said...

NO Georgia fans are pulling for Tech to win on Saturday. NONE.

Now, are some Georgia people conceding defeat before the game has even started? Yes, and that's probably understandable, to some extent.

But to WANT Tech to beat Georgia would be absurd, bordering on criminal. No "fan" of Georgia wants Tech to win...ever. Especially against us.

Football Dude said...

I picked GT to win with 13 confidence points in the pool. It's not that I want them to win, I don't. I'm just willing to give up those 13 points for a UGA win. I think a UGA win could possibly get us to the CFA Bowl. It'd be a stretch, but possible. GO DAWGS!!

you arent getting paid for this? Sheesh. PWD is setting me up with strippers and whiskey just to read this thing. You need a better agent; does Jimmy Sexton do bloggers? Of course, with Sexton, you might end up working at a blog for Louisville or Texas A&M, so I guess it's a mixed blessing.

I understand the hyperbole of "no one seems to care about the Tech game." It's been a difficult year, and all of us are a little frazzled at this point. It seems like there should be something we can do to help our guys turn it around, but all we can do is show up and pull hard.

As for Mr. I'm Withholding my $4500Next Year, good riddance. Don Leebern has more than that under the cushions of his couch. Take your nickels and dimes to Branson. I hear Wayne Newton is fabulous.

How can you call yourself a real fan, when you openly say that you do not care about the outcome of a game?
