Why the 16 Team Mega Conferences won't happen Part 2

Simply put, I don't believe the Big 10 can make the TV revenue numbers work. To grossly oversimplify the math, the Big 10 members currently pull in $22 million each. That's $242 million total. To move to 16 teams and keep the per team revenue the same, you'd need to increase the total size of the pie to $352 million.

You would think that risk adverse university presidents wouldn't make a move that risky without thinking they could increase their yearly revenue share by at least 20 percent. That requires increasing the Big 10's total revenue to over $422 million.

That's a 75 percent increase in total revenue for the Big 10 simply by adding teams like Pitt, Syracuse, Missouri, Rutgers and UConn. Why not mention Notre Dame? Because if they could get Notre Dame, they wouldn't keep adding teams.

TV Revenue is based on eyeballs. Let's look at some numbers.
  • Currently there are about 303 million people in the US.
  • The Big 10 state by state footprint includes 67 million people. That's 22% of the nation's population.
  • Adding Missouri, UConn, Pitt, Syracuse and Rutgers would increase their coverage by 37.5 million homes. Or about 56 percent.
Why are those numbers important? Well...I posted population...not number of households but the above percentages still give you an idea of the size of the footprint a 16 team league would get you. And again...there is no need to take on the risk of going to 16 teams if Notre Dame wants to be the 12th. In that case, you just stop at 12.

But I digress. About 3 weeks ago, Dennis Dodd pointed out this math:
Cable television analyst Mike Reynolds of Multichannel News estimated that the Big Ten is getting a subscription fee of 70 cents per month per subscriber within that eight-state Big Ten region. Outside of that area, he says, the fee drops to 10 cents.

Take the state of Missouri as an example of the profit potential for the Big Ten. The state had an estimated 2.2 million households in 2008. Let's assume that almost all of those have satellite or cable or both. If the Big Ten added the University of Missouri, it could potentially increase those subscriber fees from 10 cents per person to 70 cents. That's the difference between a gross of $220,000 and $1.54 million per month.
*UPDATE: I blew the math big time. Here's the better math. Adding Missouri changes the Big 10 revenue opportunity to $15 million in the state of Missouri. However, they need to add $22 million for the league to break even. The math isn't terrible for the Big 10 in theory (unlike what I wrote in the 2 paragraphs I'm striking below). But it's not clear that residents of New York, Connecticut and New Jersey will put the same value on the Big 10 Network that residents of Michigan and Ohio do.

Ok. So, adding Missouri changes the Big 10 Network's revenue opportunity in Missouri by roughly $1.3 million? Again, I don't get it. Missouri needs to add $22 million to the Big Ten pie to pay for themselves. Why is adding $1.3 million in net new TV fees a good deal for the rest of the league's media partners?

To make the math work, you'd basically have to double the value of the TV deal in the *existing 8 states* to $1.40 per household *and* double the non-Big 10 states fees to $0.20 per household to get to numbers that make sense for expansion.

As point of comparison, the NFL Network charges Comcast $0.40-0.45 per household (update: per month) for viewers of the most important sport in the United States (as of 2009). That's down from the $0.70 asking price that the NFL Network put in front of Comcast.

Now...can you get the massive revenue needed if Notre Dame is one of the 16? Maybe. But like I said earlier. Why go to 16, if you get Notre Dame in the fold. You're in a less risky position to just stop at 12.

Like I said...I don't think the 16 team Super Conference is coming. Not right in the next 2 years anyway.

Charlie Weis' hot seat to benefit Urban Meyer?

Image: Victors Valiant

The pressure on Notre Dame's Charlie Weis is now at diamond creation levels in the wake of their loss to Syracuse, and the Midwest media is beginning to line up and pile on in hopes of pushing the Irish to make a coaching change.

Here's some of the best hot seat articles:In the midst of the shouting, the call seems to be "Call Urban Meyer and offer him The Universe!!!11!" Even the Florida press is suggesting that it simply makes sense that Meyer would consider the Irish.I personally think that Weis will be given one more year at Notre Dame. It'll be a close shave decision, but ND should be at a bowl low enough on the totem pole that the bowl losing streak will be broken. That may be enough to buy a small window of grace.

They would also still owe as much as $24 million to Weis if he left this season. Next year, that total should drop by another $3.5-4 million, and he would've been given every imaginable opportunity to succeed.

Yes. Meyer would make an excellent fit at Notre Dame. In his new book "Urban's Way" he still refers to the Fighting Irish job as his dream gig. And if the Gators win the SEC this year and play for the national title, what's left to prove in Gainesville?

The biggest things working against ND if they were to pursue Meyer are:
  • The Gators know Meyer is a target. They can preemptively work to keep him financially.
  • It is easier to recruit at Florida than at Notre Dame. I'm talking logistics. Proximity to talent.
  • Jeremy Foley is a better AD than just about anyone.
The biggest things working for ND are the total size of their wallet, and the fact that they are Notre Dame. My prediction: Meyer will be the highest paid coach in football starting next year, and the beneficiary of the ND rumor mill. And still a Gator.

At best, we can hope for disruptive rumors.

*Yes. That's hardly a non-partisan source given the topic.
**Obviously not mid-western media. But who cares really.

Slate.com Calls Charlie Weis "The Worst Football Coach in the Universe"

This is one of the most spectacularly blistering pieces you'll read from Slate.com. My favorite paragraphs:
Weis' Fighting Irish now stand at 1-7. This record is only the faintest indicator of just how awful Notre Dame is. They have lost nine of their last 10 games, by an average of 24 points. None has been close. While Notre Dame has suffered very few injuries, three of its opponents have had to play the Irish without their starting quarterbacks. Two of those teams, USC and Michigan, nonetheless beat Notre Dame by a larger margin than either has beaten any other opponent so far this year. Notre Dame's lone win came against UCLA, which had been forced to use its third-string quarterback, a walk-on. In that game, Notre Dame compiled just 140 yards of offense, but won with the help of seven Bruin turnovers, five of them hand-delivered courtesy of the hapless walk-on signal-caller.

Just how bad is Notre Dame? Of the 119 teams in Division I-A, ND is 119th in total offense, 119th in rushing offense, 112th in passing offense, and 118th in scoring. If Notre Dame had doubled its scoring output, it would still rank 108th. If it doubled its rushing output (currently 34 yards a game), it would barely eke out Duke for 118th place.
Notre Dame homer blog Blue Gray Sky has its lengthy retort. In reality, we won't know how bad Weis really is until next year when he has four recruiting classes of his very own to drive into the pavement. But right now...the stats are overwhelming. As my brother said, "every time you hear another Notre Dame stat that can't blows your mind with its awfulness, you hear another stat the next day that tops it."

Jimmy Clausen and Cate Blanchett...separated at birth?

Sent in by: 81Dog (AllSchool)

This is a picture of Cate Blanchett taken at the Costume Institute Gala in NYC yesterday. I stole the pic from Drudge.

My first thought was that poor Cate needs someone to supersize a Big Mac combo for her, but then I wondered if her emaciated self would have enough strength to chew, much less swallow, solid food. My next thought was that she looks like some kind of mutant bird....almost emu-like, you might say.

This, of course, got me thinking about the other currently famous member of the Emu Family, one Jimmy "no one in my family has ever started a win versus UGA" Clausen.

Cate Blanchett has just as many wins over UGA, SEC titles, and significant victories over top 10 teams as anyone in the Clausen family. Although she appears to be able to slide herself under a door, she at least has had a successful movie career.

I think Casey Clausen was practicing for a career as a rodeo clown during his days at UT. How else could you explain the pummeling he took every year at the hands of the UGA defense? Rick Clausen is rumored to be in the running for the lead in Slingblade 2: Hillibilly Edition (a candidate to go straight to DVD, if there ever was one). Young Emu looks like he wants a gig on Animal Planet or the National Geographic Channel. When Good Emus Get Pummeled Behind a Lousy OL, indeed.

While I know that in the avian world, the male is supposed to be the one with the colorful look, I guess it wouldn't be the first thing the Clausens have gotten ass-backwards.

As a good Irish Catholic kid, I loved ND football growing up. I cheered for Joe Theisman against Texas. I pulled for ND in their match ups with Alabama (which annoyed the hell out of my SEC loving friends, especially when ND won against the favored Tide two bowls in a row). I pulled for Joe Montana, who may still be my favorite non-UGA player. I had no problem pulling for UGA against ND in the Sugar Bowl, incidentally. It was just business, right?

I started to hate Notre Dame during the Lou Holtz era. Lou seemed like a lisping phony then, and nothing that's happened since he got there has made me change my mind about him. I didn't mind Bob Davie, didn't care about Ty Willingham, but I don't think I care for Charlie Weis.

(Image: Clausen hatches helmet)

The guy is no doubt a talented offensive mind, but he seems kind of unjustifiably pompous considering that they haven't won any big games since he arrived, including beat downs in bowls. The best game they've played in the Weis era was the first loss to Southern Cal (which I admit is one of the best games I've ever seen); if moral victories are all you can point to as proof of your accomplishments, you might want to consider acquiring a touch of humility.

The marriage of Emu Clausen and Charlie Weis seems perfect to me. Two humongous egos that, between them, have racked up an impressive list of accomplishments at ND. It may make me a bad Irish Catholic, but it is my fond wish that the current status quo remain in effect for the rest of young Emu's career.
