Spurrier Toning It Down a Bit?

By all accounts the head ball coach is trying to reel expectations in a bit after telling fans/media that the Gamecocks were ready to contend last year. Here's a look at some of his comments at SEC Media days regarding the 2008 season. (video: OnlineAthens.com)

SC Stories of Interest:If the Chickens can find a QB (Garcia looks more likely to return each day), the Gamecocks could open the season with a 6-1 run again as their opening slate of NC State, Vandy, UGA, Wofford, UAB, Kentucky and Ole Miss is incredibly manageable. Unfortunately for Spurrier, the schedule ends with LSU, Tennessee, Arkansas, Florida and Clemson. So another trip to Shreveport or Memphis could be in the works for bowl season.

Wow, McKinley seemed to be focusing on 1 team specifically. Here's hoping SCAR opens up 0-3.

Did anyone see all of Spurrier's comments? I'm just wondering why he was talking about education and domestic violence in the state of South Carolina in the first place - and how exactly he thinks winning some close ballgames is going to help those statistics.

On the surface, those comments make him look pretty ridiculous.

South Carolina is unfortunately the state with the largest number of domestic violence crimes against women in our country. The campaign involved all college football coaches in the state hoping to appeal to men, their fans. The campaign wasn't about winning close games, but about how real men should treat women. I admire each of the coaches for their involvement & participation and appreciate their efforts.

Please don't think I'm speaking ill of the statewide program to reduce violence against women. It is a wonderful thing.

But Spurrier commented that SC is ranked poorly in education and domestic violence and then said they could "do a lot for (their) state if (they) can win those close games". I still think that is a fairly silly thing to say in light of the gravity of the problem.

Once again, please don't misunderstand me. Any legitimate steps Spurrier can take take to help with the problem should be taken.

I'm guessing Spurrier's comments were loosely connected to the theory that, when SC college teams lose their games, the drunk rowdy male fans beat their wives in frustration.

This sounds laughable, but I think I did hear some stat once that the #1 day for domestic violence calls to police is Super Bowl Sunday.
