SC Game: Defensive Miscues 2nd Half

Yesterday, I mentioned that I was spending some time looking at the film to get my head around how close we were to having a much, much better day. Below is a look at the 2nd half defensive miscues. I don't list a play where one dude just beats the other dude.

Drive 1

3rd and 7 SC 33

Penalty

Reshad Jones penalized for a late hit on the QB. It was a close call that could’ve gone either way. He was pushed, but Jones did pull up on the play. The pass was complete so the penalty moved the Gamecocks into UGA territory.

Cost 15 yards

Note on Drive 1

We got solid pressure on Smelly three plays of this six play drive. Once with a safety blitz that unfortunately resulted in a late hit call and twice pressure resulted in an incompletion. All were pressure was done out of the 3-3-5 look. Pressure on the QB caused the punt on this drive. UGA penalties were over half of the 29 net yards on this drive.

Drive 2

Kickoff

Back-up kicker puts the ball on the 19 yard line. SC runs it to the 30. Incredibly poorly executed bad idea.

2nd and 9 at UGA 47

Penalty

Defensive holding on Gamble. The penalty resulted in a first down and extended the drive.

No cost to this one because Rennie Curran sacked Smelley three plays later.

Overall on Drive 2

This was a solid defensive effort for UGA. We limit the penalties to only one, and we kept the Jared Cook contained to only one catch in this 8 play drive. The difference between a punt and a penalty was the sack. Again, we landed the sack from the 3-3-5 look. South Carolina was limited to 14 plays, 58 yards and zero points in the third quarter. It was a very successful period of play.

Drive 3

Punt Coverage

Missed Tackle

Brandon Boykin badly missed a tackle in punt coverage. Luckily, Gamble was blocked in the back and the return was brought back.
No cost.

1st and 10 UGA 35

Big pass completion to TE (Cook)

We had tried matching Cook up with Rennie, Gamble and Dent. Nothing had worked. It certainly didn’t work here either as Cook made a great catch on a seam route against Curran. I’m no expert, but it seems like Jones should’ve been there to help out.

1st and Goal UGA 9

Penalty

They put Cook in at wide receiver. In other words, Spurrier showed us a 2 TE set from a personnel standpoint. We responded by lining Reshad Jones up one on one with Cook. In theory this is our best match-up against Cook. Unfortunately, Jones tackled him in the endzone while the ball was in the air. RJ had good enough position to not "need" to do that.

Cost was minimal because SC fumbled two plays later after the hit by Curran on the ball.

Overall on Drive 3

Spurrier out coached the Georgia defense on this drive. South Carolina had the ball 9 plays on this drive before fumbling on the 2 yard line. We had problems with our LBs blitzing tentatively on some possessions, and we had problems covering Cook. This was the drive where the lack of a pass rush really hurt Georgia as Smelley went 4-4 and was rarely hurried.

Drive 4

1st and 10 SC 11

Long completion to Cook.

Complete and total blown coverage. It looks like Dewberry blew the coverage. At the snap, he releases to an already covered WR who appears to be the responsibility of a CB. Dewberry was immediately pulled from the game.

Overall on Drive 4

Drive ended when Spurrier put a FR in the game at WR only to watch him screw up his route on 4th and 2.

We landed a sack on the 2nd play of the drive as UGA got pressure from the 4-2-5 look while Garcia was at QB. They leveraged the quick drops to beat coverage, but you can’t ask a QB like Smelley to win a game like this.

Drive 5

2nd and 2 SC 47

Penalty

Pass interference on Asher Allen. It was close, but we’re not getting that call on the road.

1st and 10 UGA 49

16 yard completion

Spurrier put a back-up running back in for the first snap of his career. He streaked down the field covered by Rennie Curran. Completion. It’s not really a miscue as much as probably Rennie saying…”Who the hell is that dude? And where the hell does he think he’s going?”

1st and 10 UGA 34

Penalty

UGA got decent pressure on Smelley resulting in an incompletion. However, it was definitely interference on Ellerbe. Ellerbe shouldn’t be covering Cook. Drive ended after the 4th and 2 incompletion from Smelley.

Overall on Drive 5.

We went with a 3-2-6 look for much of this drive playing prevent defense with no pass rush. When we went back to the 3-3-5 look and put pressure on the QB, the result was an incompletion and a game ending interception for the Gamecocks.

Overall, I feel better about the 2nd half after watching again. We have to find a way to get pressure on the QB. The rest sorts itself out. The good news...everyone would kill to have our run defense. If you can stop the run, you can beat just about anyone.

"If you can stop the run, you can beat just about anyone."

Umm, we play a pass happy ASU team this week with damn good receivers and a pretty decent qb who can throw.

After watching the SCU game, I don't see how we escape the desert with a win. Especially if we continue to let them start from the 35.

If I'm wrong - explain it to me. What am I missing?

I’m not an Xs and Os guy so I may be a bit off. My interpretation of our “defense” is that we rely on the 4 man rush to generate pressure. Our LB and DB play the soft zone. I’m guessing that Martinez is willing to give up a receiver settling down in the soft spots of the zone and he’s hoping that pressure on the QB causes an errant throw as to where the receiver basically sitting open with 5 yds of cushion from any defender will have a hard time making the catch or at least we are keeping everything in front of us.

The problem of course is we aren’t getting the pressure with the front 4 and are getting eaten alive with the dink and dunk passes against our soft zone. Sure the run D looks stout - I don’t think anyone is worried about trying to run the ball on us. Why would they need to when they’ve seen GSU, then CMU and now SC essentially dink and dunk their way down field at will.

If we aren’t going to get a better rush or blitz more, Willie’s gotta adjust and get out of that soft zone. Otherwise, we are just gonna get picked apart all season.

Well, ASU isn't SoCar on D for one thing.

Two, the teams that beat the crap out of them last year (USC and Texas) totally shut ASU's run down. Rudy'll get his pass yards, but with no run game it'll matter about as much as CMU's offense.
