Thursday, July 20, 2006 was a very tragic day for the Brophy family, and for the Bulldawg nation. Kevin Brophy, then a rising Junior on the Georgia Men's basketball team, was killed in an automobile accident near Greensboro, Georgia. Broph was a beloved leader of the team. His optimism, friendship, and leadership will forever be missed; however, his legacy and story will continue to live on.

In the Fall of 2006, the University of Georgia founded the Kevin Brophy Memorial Basketball Scholarship in Kevin's honor. Thus, the "Do It For Broph 5K Run/Walk" was born. All proceeds benefit the Kevin Brophy Scholarship Endowment Fund.

Basketball: More LSU post-game articles

Dawgs move to 5-2 in the SEC

If you had asked me to list the least winnable games on the 2006-2007 schedule before the season, then yesterday's LSU game would've definitely been near the top of my list. To win it, is huge. To win it in such dramatic fashion in the face of such overwhelming distractions surrounding Brophy's Memorial day, is especially huge.

The Dawgs are now 5-2 in SEC play. With the tie breakers Georgia currently holds over Vandy and UK, the Bulldogs are in second place in the SEC East. Suddenly the world is full of hope, optimism and trains that run on time. An NCAA tourney bid is now a very, very obtainable goal.

We get the Vols in Knoxville on Wednesday night. SEC road wins are always tough to come by, and this year is no exception. Teams are 9-30 on the road in SEC play this year. The SEC West has won exactly one road game so far, and teams not named Florida are 6-30 on the road.

Dawg hoop fans should keep their eyes on the Tennessee papers for news of Chris Lofton's health. Without Lofton, the trip to Big Orange Country looks very manageable.

The team still has miles of work to do in its half court offensive sets. But we found a way to win, and that's a great thing.

Georgia's Tourney Resume (per RealtimeRPI.com):
    -- RPI = 37
    -- SOS = 13
    -- Vs. RPI Top 50 = 2-4
    -- Vs. RPI Top 75 = 6-5
-- WarrenNolan has our RPI at 38.

Recap: Georgia wins against LSU in a thriller

ATHENS, Ga. (AP) -- The last time Levi Stukes sank a game-winning 3-pointer, the first teammate off the bench to jump in his arms was Kevin Brophy. On the day Georgia honored Brophy, who died in an automobile accident on July 19, Stukes delivered another last-second 3 to lift the Bulldogs to a 57-54 win over No. 21 Louisiana State on Sunday. Do it for Brophy

Chip Towers has an inital salute to Kevin Brophy on the AJC's site. Towers will have a longer piece on Brophy in Sunday's paper. He also reminds everyone:
As you all probably know, there is going to be a tribute BEFORE the game to the late Kevin Brophy, the Australian player who was killed in a car accident in Greensboro last summer. Coach Dennis Felton asked me to ask our readers to please get to the game early as the ceremony will begin several minutes before the scheduled 3:05 p.m. Sunday tipoff. [Felton] suggests being there by 2:45.
The Red & Black has its preview of the LSU game already up. About 1,500 seats still remain for the game Sunday against one of last year's Final Four participants.

Update 1: Georgiadogs.com has an article up about the ceremony to honor Brophy's family.
Update 2: The Game will be televised on LF Sports.

The following promotional events are also scheduled for Sunday’s game vs. LSU:

Wear Red vs. LSU on Sunday -- Pregame Tribute to Brophy

On Sunday, the men's basketball team will have a special pregame ceremony to remember and pay tribute to Kevin Brophy. Brophy was killed in a car accident this offseason, and his parents and family are in town from Australia for the event.

The game starts at 3:00 pm on Sunday vs. #16 LSU. Also, fans are encouraged to wear for this game. Please remember to arrive early for the pre-game events. This is an extremely big deal, and it's a chance for our program to thank the family of one of fallen Dawgs. Please remind others to get there early and wear red.

Thanks.

ESPN on Felton and Kevin Brophy

Damn Good Dawg

ESPN's Andy Katz has a great article on the death of Kevin Brophy and how Felton has been dealing with it. Excellent read.

My heart goes out to Felton and the entire UGA team as they continue to deal with this tragedy.

Memorial Service for Kevin Brophy also Tribute Video

GeorgiaDogs.com has a tribute video up in honor of Kevin Brophy. The video is narrated by Dennis Felton.

Also, UGA has announced that the Memorial Service for Kevin will be held on Monday, July 24.

Felton's comments on Brophy's time at UGA are here.
“It’s a tragic time for us – everything about it is tragic. Losing someone so abruptly and unexpectedly and so young. On top of that, losing someone beloved by his friends and family. He was so special to us.

“Kevin was the most loved player in the program, from top to bottom. He was so genuine, optimist, and enthusiastic…we all just enjoyed those qualities when we were around him.

“Kevin was a highly respected player on our team. He was probably closer to every player on our team than anyone else. He was loved by his team and everyone in the program.

“We were all excited about next year, but no one more so than Kevin. He was in the midst of a great summer and was really working hard to increase his contributions next season. He was literally taking over the team this summer, leading by example. No one was more excited about next year than Kevin.

“He was a good student who was well on his way toward obtaining his degree. He had really settled down with his girlfriend and I think both of them saw each other in their long-term futures. He had put himself in position, both on and off the court, to do whatever he wanted to do in life.

“He has made as much of an impact in this program than anyone here, and he’s was not someone who averaged double-figures every game – that speaks a lot into how important he was.

“He was what we are all about here, in terms of building a program. This is another poignant and terrible example of how precious life is, and how you should value every day and opportunity. You don’t need these types of experiences to remind you.

“Right now, we are terribly sad for Kevin and his family, and for ourselves – we miss him.”

UGA Hoops Player Kevin Brophy Killed in Auto Accident

UGA Point Guard Kevin Brophy (Image Georgiadogs.com)

UPDATE 1/29/07:
The article below was written immediately after learning of Kevin's death. If you're finding this article now, it's because it's the #1 search result for "kevin brophy" on Google. For all Kevin Brophy related articles on this site click here.

The original blog about his death:

Thoughts and prayers go out to Kevin Brophy's family as well as the UGA basketball family. What a tragic loss. Story from the Georgiadogs web site:
ATHENS --- University of Georgia basketball player Kevin Brophy was killed in an automobile accident near Greensboro, Ga., late Thursday afternoon.

Brophy, a rising junior guard from Melbourne, Australia, was traveling from Athens to Savannah after participating in a basketball clinic at Stegeman Coliseum. He had attended Memorial Day School in Savannah as an exchange student, graduating in 2004.

“We are devastated by the loss of Kevin,” said Georgia basketball coach Dennis Felton. “This is just very tragic. Kevin was a beloved teammate and a pillar of our program. We will miss his undeniable optimism, leadership and sincere friendship.

“My prayers are with Kevin and his parents and family with Australia. Our focus now is to do everything we can to support the Brophy family.”

Originally a walk-on for the Bulldogs, Brophy played in all 28 games as a freshman in 2005, starting in eight and averaging 3.8 points per game. His career scoring high of 19 points came that season in Georgia’s 68-59 victory over Vanderbilt.

Brophy was awarded an athletic scholarship before the 2006 season. He played in 18 games as a sophomore and averaged 0.9 points per game. He was one of seven team members to have remained in Athens throughout this summer.

“This is a shocking tragedy and we all have the deepest sympathy for Kevin’s family,” said UGA Director of Athletics Damon Evans. “He was an outstanding young man and leaves a tremendous void in our basketball, Athletic Association, and University families.”
Chip Towers of the AJC did an exceptional job of explaining what happened based on the info available. The Athens Banner-Herald also puts a human face on things with John Kaltefleiter's story.
