Bevo XIII Dies

Non-dawg, but as much as we love Uga VI, I figure Georgia fans have empathy when another team loses their mascot.
(ESPN) Austin, Texas -- Bevo XIII, the longest-tenured mascot in Texas Longhorns history, has gone to the big ranch in the sky.
The retired mascot died Monday on the private ranch where he lived with his successor, Bevo XIV, the Silver Spurs spirit club announced Tuesday. Bevo XIII, 22, was on the Texas sideline for 16 seasons, starting in 1988.
Why "Bevo" for the name:
Pinckney presented the well-traveled steer to the UT student body on Thanksgiving Day 1916. The two-legged Longhorns went on to defeat Texas A&M 21-7, avenging a 13-0 loss to the Aggies the year before.Other Bevo Links:
For a time there was talk of branding the steer with a big T and the numbers 21-7, but the notion was overridden as cruel. The holidays came and went and then it was February. On the morning of Feb. 11, 1917 the owner of the stockyard where the longhorn was kept made a startling discovery: Intruders, presumably Aggies, had slipped up on the penned mascot and used a red hot running iron to sear the 13-0 score from 1915 on the steer's flank.
The steer's embarrassed student handlers, in turn, soon came up with a clever way to save face for their school, though it was a little hard on their mascot. The UT partisans converted the 13 into a B, the hyphen into an e and inserted a V in front of the zero. That spelled Bevo, the brand name of a popular near beer.

As an aside, Damon has really blossomed as a presenter and communicator. That first Bulldog Road Show was a bit shakey at times with Damon trying to navigate the Dooley Shadow. However, at this year's ATL Bulldawg Club meeting, he was much more relaxed and impressive.

The only way to see the game is with a ticket. It doesn't look like any tickets are available on Georgiadogs.com, but I know StubHub.com has some.

More on the Curse of the Cherrishinski
The Cherrishinski Curse, which was discussed earlier this morning, brought a great comment from an anonymous poster to the blog. The note is below.
Sources close to the program tell me they just put a Cherrishinski machine in the sub-basement of the Butts-Mehre building in time for Halloween.Genius.
It is a special section of the museum few people know about, down there next to the toilet. It is open only one day a year and you have to get a special pass to visit.
I happen to be one of the few lucky fans to have visited the area. There are some intersting items on display. They include:

Good news on the recruiting front
AJ Green has committed to the Dawgs. Green is a front runner for the #1 overall player in the country for the 2008 signing class. Green is a dominating wide receiver who plays for legendary Summerville (SC) High School. For old school Georgia HS football fans, Summerville has a tradition bigger than Valdosta's program, and they play in South Carolina's largest classification.

Curse of the Cherrishinski
If you saw the front cover of Sunday's AJC, you might have seen the photo above. It shows Matt Tovrog popping a Cherrishinski along with the caption:
"UGA fan Matt Tovrog eats a "Cherrishinski" -- a cherry soaked in grain alcohol. The treat was dubbed by his tailgating friends in honor of UGA quarterback Joe Tereshinski III."The Cherrishinski was actually invented at a Condo on Amelia Island in October of last year by a UGA Law School Student as was discussed here and here.
Long time readers know that this evil concoction resurfaced at the Auburn game the following week, and Georgia experienced another heart breaking loss. It has been discussed several times on this site over the past year that the Cherrishinski is the Official Beverage/Food of Doom(TM) because of its 0-2 start.
Therefore, I blame Matt Tovrog and his tailgate crew for jinxing the Dawgs. As Dawgnoxious said very, very late Saturday night:
- "We should fill Marquis Elmore's car with all the world's Cherrishinskis and drive it off a bridge."

Post-UT Game Thoughts
If you had told me pre-game that....
We didn't win huge because of two things:
1. We played the worst defensive football I've seen from a UGA team since Kevin Ramsey's Auburn implosion in 1999 at home.
2. Joe Tereshinski turned the ball over 3 times resulting in 21 points, and we coughed up another blocked punt for 7 points. You can't beat anyone surrendering 28 easy points off turnovers.

The Good:
-- The first half: A religious experience.
-- WR Play: They got open. They made the tough catches, and they played DB a few times to save Joe from even more INTs.
-- OL: Mostly a good night. Certainly their best night since South Carolina.
-- Punt Returns: Mikey won't see many more punts this year if opposing coaches are smart.
-- Lumpkin: Solid play; although he didn't get enough carries. Again.
-- The Fans: The fans showed up early. They showed up loud, and they stayed until the final minutes when it was simply too depressing to watch. They did their part to help recruiting and help the team.

The Wildly Inconsistent:
-- Kickoff Returns: We started one possession on our own 5, and we started two more well, well inside the 20. On the other hand, when Thomas Brown finally saw some blocking he took one too the house. If you get tackled on the 5 yardline, it's probably blocking more than the return guy's fault. There is huge upside in this area if we get more consistent play.

The Bad:
-- Joe T: The entire purpose of playing the 5th year senior with limited athletic ability is because "he won't make mistakes. He won't turn the ball over. He will get us out of bad plays, and he will play smart." 21 points off Joe T turnovers is the difference in the game. Ultimately, we lost because of the worst defensive game plan in 7 years. But Joe's turnovers killed us.
I've seen people complaining because Richt called a slant on 3rd and 3 that resulted in the 1st interception. I've seen folks say, "Why didn't we run the ball there?" And "Why are we asking Joe to do things he can't?" Folks, a 4 yard slant on 3rd and 3 is a damn good call. It's also safe. If Joe can't make that throw, he shouldn't be on scholarship at a school like Georgia. He CAN make that pass. He just didn't. The pass wasn't deflected and intercepted because he's unlucky. It was deflected because his windup is so slow that the Defensive Lineman had time to anticipate the release and jump for the deflection. 12-20 with 2 INTs and a fumble isn't going to cut it. Again...we ultimately lost the game because of the defense. But Joe T's errors were brutal.
The Ugly:
-- Punting: This time it was a bad snap in the endzone, and I think Kevin Butler said on the post-game show that Lumpkin also missed his block. Either way, that's three in 2 games. Yes, I said three because Ole Miss was robbed last week on that call.
The Galatically Absurdly Awful:
-- Martinez: A topic that merits its own post. But the short version is this. UT is better than us right now. Are they 2 points better with a good game plan? Or they 10 points better with a good game plan? I don't know. But I know that no team that recruits at the level that UGA does should EVER give up 51 points to anyone. Particularly not at home, and particularly not to a team that lost to Vanderbilt the year before.
-- The second half: We were outscored 37-9. Ouch. That will leave a mark.

They played well, and we played like complete and total crap in the second half.
Hats off to them though. They made the plays to beat our brains in. Beyond that, it's probably a good idea for me to take a deep breath til after breakfast.
