One week to Jacksonville: Getting your hate right

Just getting my hate on. Smoking some ribs, shoulder, and lamb. And getting my hate on.

Being from South Georgia, I can't overstate how much I hate Florida. I also despise former [redacted because they don't deserve the moniker] fans who jumped on the Gator band wagon during the 90's and are looking to get back into Dawgnation. I don't even pity you, because you made your choices. Now you get to wear your jorts live with those choices.

Get your heads right, Dawgnation, we have one week until it is good versus evil. Right vs. wrong. Our way vs. all that is unholy. Decently dressed vs. whatever the hell it is they try to pass off as clothing. Bourbon vs. 4Loko. REM vs. Sister Hazel. Herschel vs. Douche 3:16. Red and black vs. orange and blue. Coke vs. Pepsi. BBQ vs. barbecuing. 

Really, it is a battle for the very soul of America.

Why Tim Tebow is unlikable to me

First, let's get this out of the way. I don't doubt Tebow's sincerity or his Christianity. There are plenty of reasons to believe he is sincere in his beliefs and lives the life he preaches. While I enjoy the pop culture aspect of 'Tebowing,' I think it is a sincere expression of his personal appreciation for the gifts God has given him.

With that said, I don't like him. Even if he had played for Georgia, I would have found him hard to stomach, as a news story. Of course, if he'd played for Georgia, he might just be another pretty good TE to have come out of Athens, but I digress. The reason?

His efforts come across as phony and for a particular effect. The constant hypeing by ESPN, other media, and Thom Brennaman don't help.

If you want to see what someone who does things to help people because he wants to help, not because there is a media bump for it, but because he wants to help people, go see this. Memphis' QB, Jacob Karam, has been going to St. Jude in Memphis and just doing whatever. Moving boxes. Sitting with families. Playing the piano so child leukemia patients and their families can have a few fleeting minutes of joy.

Everyday Superman stuff.

I know there are things Tim Tebow cannot help. He can't help ESPN and others doing what they do. His family and his media people can. Jacob Karam, however, doesn't have a compelling back story. He didn't get home schooled. His father didn't do high visibility mission work. He isn't a charismatic blue eyed kid. He wasn't born of a seeming miracle.

Yet, Jacob Karam is doing it right. And for the right reasons. I'm not saying Tim Tebow is doing things for the wrong reasons. I'm sure its possible I'd like Tim Tebow the person, with the glaring exception of his college choice. Tim Tebow, the persona, is wholly unlikable.

Heresy! The CFL next for Tebow?

Oh, Doug Farrar. You know exactly how to get Thom Brenneman and Skip Bayless worked up. Suggesting the CFL? He won the Heisman! All he does is win(except when he doesn't)! He is ready for the NFL!

Some of my favorite lines that are sure to make Bayless craycray:

Of course, he'd then need another NFL team willing and able to deal with his severe limitations as an NFL-level passer.

Tebow, for his part, will have to be cognizant of the fact that other NFL teams (hello, Jacksonville Jaguars) would be perfectly willing to throw him on their roster as a seat-filling mascot...

Of course, there is the praise of his 'football smarts.' Football smarts have never been his issue. His inability to hit a receiver further down-field than 14 yards and his having to QB from the windup are his issues.

Not a Bad Weekend - Tebow, South Carolina and Tennessee

Yesterday was a good day for those searching for proof that God loves others the same way he does Tim Tebow: South Carolina picks up the first points in the Fulmer Cup. Also, the media's Tebowmania came crashing down in a cavalcade of cliches why Tim Tebow might be a super good dude, but he is a left-handed version of Byron Leftwich. Not that there is anything wrong with that. Byron might not be as medically talented as Tebow, but he does have a couple of cool rides.

Tennessee football. I think that is all I have to say about that, right?

There are few things I love more than Schadenfreude, if for no other reason than feeling superior to South Carolina/Tennessee fans and wearing ascots at parties and saying Schadenfreude. Schadenfreude.

So, Denver is Finally Seeing What Nearly Everyone Else Knew

Tim Tebow is, at best, a gifted athlete that got as far as he did at QB due to the system he was in.  He is likely to be the third string QB in Denver this season...if they don't trade him.  An undrafted free agent from the University of Minnesota is drawing the praise Tebow normally gets, but as an undrafted free agent vs. 1st round pick, the former Gopher will be on the practice squad. 

As much as I don't like Tebow, I hate the media's obsessive deification of him even more.  Tebow is by all accounts a strong Christian man, just like many, many strong Christian men that have played football before him.  He accomplished some very impressive things at Florida. He wasn't the first football player to go on missions.  He wasn't the first to win the Heisman.  He was the first college player to perform medical procedures on the privates of 14 year old boys, so he has that going for him. 

I'm just shocked the media is still scratching their heads over the 'fall' of Tebow in the NFL.  Keep the sharp stuff away from Thom Brenneman.

Tebow Still Chasing Herschel's Rushing Record

The TV guys last night said that Tebow tied Herschel's record for career rushing touchdowns in the SEC last night. That's technically true, but it's pretty misleading.

Herschel actually scored 5 more rushing TDs that aren't counted in the record books because bowl stats didn't start counting until about 10 years ago. He scored twice vs. Notre Dame, twice vs. Pitt and once vs. Penn State in the '81-'83 Sugar Bowls.

In other words, Tebow still has six more rushing TDs to go to break Walker's REAL record. Also, Walker played in 36 total games including bowls. With the longer seasons today, Tebow has already started 34 games in two and a half seasons. Additionally, he has played in 48 total games so far. So it's not an apples to apples comparison.

Nor did Herschel have any of the elite surrounding players that Tebow has played with.

That aside, Douche 3:16's stats really are amazing, and I do think he's one of the Top 3 SEC players in my lifetime alongside Herschel and Bo. I just have a problem with him getting that record under fairly uneven terms.
