Georgia lands Commit #17
Coach Richt is getting closer and closer to filling up the 2008 recruiting class. Marcus Dowtin (6'2" 215 lb linebacker) is a rising senior at Fork Union Military Academy gave his verbal to the Georgia coaching staff today.
Note: He's not involved in Fork Union's post-graduate program. He actually attends high school there. It's a similar recruitment path that Ray Gant took to Georgia.
According to the Athens Banner-Herald, Dowtin also plays running back for Fork Union. Maryland offered him as a running back. Clemson, Michigan and Virginia offered as a linebacker.

SEC Scheduling News: Auburn adds home and home with Clemson

Tractor Porn seems appropriate for this post
Auburn continues the SEC trend of taking advantage of the 12th game to book a quality non-conference opponent. After wussing out on the non-conference slate from '04-'07, the Tigers are stepping up. They will play Clemson in 2010 (at AU) and 2011 (at CU). For Clemson this series replaces the recently cancelled match-up with Pitt.
Winner gets the lake.
Auburn's non-conference opponents:
- 2007 - Kansas State, USF + 2 jobbers (all home)
2008 - West Virginia, Southern Miss + 2 jobbers (all home)
2009 - West Virginia, Southern Miss + 2 jobbers (only WVU away)
2010 - Clemson (home)
2011 - Clemson (away)
- 2008 -- Citadel (H), UCF (H), vs. La. Tech (at Shreveport), SC (H)

Auburn building $92 million Basketball Arena and Practice Facility

Image: Scout.com
Auburn has finally approved plans to build a new arena for basketball. It won't open til the 2010-2011 season. Per SI.com, the project includes:
The plan calls for a basketball-only arena, including practice facilities, offices, dressing rooms, luxury suites and seats close to the floor. Athletic director Jay Jacobs said the tentative plan is for 9,600 seats, some 900 fewer than Beard-Eaves.Auburn is issuing around $60 million in municipal bonds to pay for part of the construction. A series of questions comes to mind upon learning that fact:
It would be the SEC's second-smallest arena, ahead of Mississippi's Tad Smith Coliseum, which seats 8,700.
- 1. What kind of person buys stock in Auburn? That's like investing in an asbestos wholesaler or short-selling Exxon. If Bobby Lowder dies or gets pissed and writes Auburn out of his will, they won't be able to pay.
2. Where's the $60 million going to come from? After paying Saban, there's no money left in the State of Alabama system.
3. If they try selling naming rights, who are they going to call? John Deere? Natural Light? Skoal?
As it relates to UGA:
- Our new practice facility for basketball will soon have its grand opening. We spent $30 million on the project. Chip Towers took a tour recently, and he said that it's amazing. I walked around it two weeks ago, and I'm thrilled with the progress.
- There is no announced time table for renovating Stegeman. However, Auburn and Ole Miss were tied for the most rancid, disgusting hoops arenas in the SEC. While the practice facility is amazing, we're right there with Miss State and Bama for the next most sucky arena. If AU is upgrading, that raises the expectations for us, and I think the pressure is on Damon to produce a timeline.
- There is no chance that we will build a new arena. First, there's no new place to put it on UGA owned property. Second, we just built the practice facility and a new parking deck right next to Stegeman. Why would we move the arena elsewhere? Third, tearing it down and building on the same spot would probably double or triple the cost and we'd be playing hoops in Gwinnett for 4 or 5 years if we started over on the same spot. I'd wager that an aggressive renovation could happen for $30-40 million, and you wouldn't even recognize the place. Plus, we'd only have to play in Gwinnett for two years.
- I do like the idea of building a smaller arena for Auburn. South Carolina and Tennessee both built arenas far too large for their needs, and the massive number of empty seats is sort of an anchor on the program. If we renovate, I hope we don't go over 12k or so. I'd rather have a packed house and a waiting list than empty seats.

GameDay is opening at Virginia Tech vs. ECU
ESPN College GameDay will open the season at Virginia Tech for their match-up with East Carolina. So much for my predictions.
That shoots at least two if not three weeks out of the water right out of the gate. They're going to cover the emotional story of the Hokies instead of the UT vs. Cal game. The common thinking was that they would cover the VT story in Week 2 at LSU.
As one VT fan said, "This way, they're much more likely to get a happy ending vs. the outcome in Baton Rouge."
All the best to the VT people as they continue their healing process.

UGA vs. GT Tickets Now Available from Tech's Website
Georgia Tech is now selling tickets to the UGA game on its web site. The ticket is available via the three game "Flex Pack" via their web site. You can buy the tickets by going here. The Flex Pack allows you to buy tickets for any 3 games, and GT varies prices for games based on demand. For instance the UGA game cost $50 while VT (Thursday, Nov. 1st at 7:30 pm) and Clemson cost $45. I think Samford costs around $28. In other words, you can go the cheaper route and get UGA + Samford + Army and save a few bucks. Or you can go UGA + VT + Clemson (or UNC) and get the better games.
The better games total out to be $140 for the 3 games (total) + $10 shipping (per order). The cheaper games...obviously cost less. ;)
If you want slightly better tickets, you could contribute a few extra bucks to the "TECH Fund" and get better seats for $25 or so. I'm not sure how that works, but the idea of contributing on top of buying tix to a game I'll never see (clemson), made me puke a little in my own mouth.
Great seats near the UGA band were still available as of 12:30 am on June 28th.
The Virginia Tech game is appealing on Thursday night b/c it's the week after UGA vs. UF, and our very appearance during one of their games causes them deep distress. Good times.
If you need help dumping your Clemson or other game tix, you can feel free to list your extras on StubHub.com. Just go to the link and click "sell" for the games in question. It's pretty easy.
Let's fill Bobby Dodd with Red. Like normal.

Drew Landers Update
As we discussed earlier today, the son of Georgia women's basketball coach Andy Landers was in the intensive care unit of Grady Memorial Hospital in Atlanta on Monday after sustaining head trauma Sunday evening in a car-truck collision in Alabama. Here are updates from the Athens Banner Herald and the AJC on Drew's condition.
Per the AJC:
PWD
Per the AJC:
"Drew sustained a head injury in the collision as well as a bruised lung. Other than that, there does not appear to be any additional injuries of consequence," Andy Landers said in a statement issued through the athletics association. "There has been no surgery and none scheduled at this point. The doctors and medical personnel at Grady Health System have been outstanding and from conversations with them we are very optimistic about his prognosis for recovery."Per the Athens Banner Herald:
"Things are good; he's stable," Andy Landers said Monday afternoon from the hospital. "There aren't really any indicators that there is going to be anything permanent or sustained from it. I'll feel a lot better saying that (tomorrow) than I do today."Landers was one of three North Oconee High School students injured in a crash in Oxford, Ala., that killed junior varsity basketball coach Shawn Smith. The other two students were released from the hospital. The driver/assistant coach passed away. No word on funeral arrangements yet for Smith.
Drew Landers is being kept sedated and breathing with the help of oxygen tubes, his father said. Andy Landers said he expected his son to spend about a week at Grady. There is a risk with head injuries of seizures for seven to 10 days, Landers said.

Son of UGA women's basketball coach among injured
By CHIP TOWERS
The Atlanta Journal-Constitution
Published on: 06/25/07
ATHENS — Drew Landers, the son of Georgia women's basketball coach Andy Landers, was in critical but stable condition in an intensive care unit at Grady Memorial Hospital, a hospital spokesperson told the Atlanta Journal-Constitution Monday morning.
Drew Landers, a rising senior at North Oconee High School, was one of three passengers in a Honda Accord that was struck head-on by a tractor-trailer on Interstate 20 in Oxford, Ala., Sunday evening. Shawn Smith, an assistant basketball coach at North Oconee who was driving the Accord, was killed.
Students David Firth and Ja'Rius Ross were also injured in the crash and were transported to Northeast Alabama Regional Medical Center in Anniston, Ala. They were treated and released, according to the hospital.
Claude Felton, a spokesperson for the Georgia Athletics Association, said federal laws prevented him from disclosing details of Drew Landers' condition. However, he did say he received a text message from Coach Landers early Monday morning that indicated Drew Landers, who was life-flighted from Anniston to Atlanta overnight, got "a good report" from Grady doctors and would recover from his injuries.
Andy Landers did not immediately return messages left on his cell phone.
According to Calhoun County coroner Pat Brown, the crash occurred about 5 p.m. on I-20 in Oxford, about 12 miles from Jacksonville State University where the North Oconee basketball team was attending a summer camp.
The tractor-trailer driving in the westbound lane apparently crossed the median into the eastbound lane and struck the car head-on, Brown said.
The Associated Press contributed to this report.

Who's Blown Out the Most in the SEC?

Richt holds up 1 finger for each of Nutt's blowouts
Phillip Marshall of the Huntsville Times wrote an interesting piece about the frequency that certain SEC coaches get blown out. Per his article:
For the comparison to be fair, I limited it to coaches who have spent at least five seasons in the SEC. I limited my research to the last five seasons each coach spent in the SEC. I didn't look at coaches from Vanderbilt, the Mississippi schools or Kentucky for obvious reasons. I also decided a "blowout" would be a game in which a team lost by 14 points or more.Richt came out *extremely* well.
That left me with Tuberville, Alabama's Nick Saban (from his LSU days), Georgia's Mark Richt, Tennessee's Phillip Fulmer, Arkansas' Houston Nutt and South Carolina's Steve Spurrier (at South Carolina and Florida). When I began to look through the records, I really wasn't sure what to expect.
- 1. Nutt, 10 blowouts (no shocker there)
2. Saban, 9
3. Fulmer and Tuberville, 8
5. Spurrier, 6
6. Richt, 3

Gamecocks Announce Future Schedules
I missed this a few weeks ago. But it's interesting to see what the Gamecocks are doing from a scheduling standpoint thru 2016. It shows a mix of quality intra-regional match-ups, well located mid-tier regional games, mind numbing boredom and Div I-AA beat downs to compliment the Clemson series. It's basically all over the place.
South Carolina's Future Schedules:
I've said numerous times that booking games with non-conference schools in border states is the best way for Spurrier to off set the limited in state talent pool and expand his recruiting footprint. Thus, the UNC and NC State series are a great fit for the Gamecocks.
I also like the unique 2-2-1 series with East Carolina that has 2 games at home, 2 in the fertile recruiting area of Charlotte and 1 at ECU. I think that it's a smart move by their AD. I'd crap a brick if Damon pulled this move at Georgia, but it does make sense for the Coots given their where they are as a program. Obviously...not all SC fans agree with me. Others just don't like dealing with Skip Holtz, ECU's head coach (as if he'll be there in five years).
I also can't poke fun at their Div I-AA games as it looks like UGA and many of our neighbors are going to book one Div I-AA game per year from now on. But you do have to hope they'll continue to step up and schedule aggressively post 2010. If their future schedules look more like the 2014 and less like 2010 (see chart above), they're not exactly reaching for the stars.
A great fit for them scheduling wise would be Georgia Tech. The two schools played each other eight times in the 70s while both were wandering the wilderness as independents, and they played four more times in the late 80s-early 90s before SEC expansion.
It'll be interesting to see how the schedules unfold for our SEC brethren.

Daily Munson Update

The AJC's Chip Towers, who is doing a great job on this story, uses his blog to add some color to the Munson situation for 2007.
Anyway, as Hondo explains it, Munson has an “open agreement” with the UGAA and WSB and can pretty much do whatever he wants when it comes to announcing Georgia’s games.Towers also mentions how the Charleston fires that killed 9 fire fighters affected AJ Green, UGA WR recruit. Green's mentor was killed in the blaze.
“Everybody wants it to be definitive, to be black and white,” Hondo told me. “But that’s not the way it is. Right now, Larry’s saying he doesn’t want to do road games and that’s fine. But if we get to the fourth week of the season and Larry says, ‘you know what, I feel pretty good and I think want to go to Tuscaloosa and do the Alabama game.’ We’re not going to say no to that. Of course we’d want him there. So I think it’s going to be more of a wait-and-see thing.”
Across the Southeast, the Jacksonville Times-Union really tore into the Athens Banner Herald's John Kaltefleiter over his article earlier in the week. As I said at the time, I think Kaltefleiter started his article off very awkwardly, but I don't think he meant for it to come off nearly as disrespectful as he did.
I don't envy ANYONE writing an opinion piece for Munson right now b/c you're worried that every last word is going to come off wrong or be over analyzed. I must have edited my piece a dozen times. That's why I didn't throw Kaltefleiter under the bus. I think he made a bad call wit his intro. Not an error of meanness.
Speaking of opinion pieces on Munson. Kyle King has an open letter to Damon Evans on the topic of replacing Munson. The only thing I disagree with is this common expectation that we're going to hire a homer. That may be, but even Munson didn't start off as a raging homer. By his own admission, he didn't jump the shark into unabashed fan until the '73 Tennessee game in Knoxville...roughly 7 years after taking the job.
The Jax paper also has a quick article on Munson just working home games. Did you know that Munson was briefly the voice of the USFL's Jacksonville Bulls? There's a deep cut random tidbit.
And on the warm and fuzzy side, Darrell Huckaby has an editorial on Munson in the Gwinnett Daily Post.

Munson should be celebrated. Not mourned

Good old Larry (Image: SI.com)
From looking at the message boards and listening to sports talk, you'd think that Munson had already passed. So many folks speaking in such dark, depressing tones.
Folks, Larry Munson is alive and looking to go out (professionally) on his own terms. Or pretty close to it. We should all be so lucky.
We all knew this day was coming. He doesn't own a time machine, a fountain of youth or even a flux capacitor. He was going to retire at some point. The circumstances certainly aren't ideal, but it's manageable.
Don't misunderstand me...I want Larry to get healthy, feel better and stay engaged with the program for as long as he wants. I'm with Damon Evans who said, "If he wants to call the games til he's 106, that's fine with me." But regardless of how this shakes out....
Not preemptively mourning him.
Here's my Recommendation for LarryFest Tour 2007***:
-- Enjoy an extra stiff cocktail in Larry's honor
-- Pack a nice cigar for post-game celebrations
-- Flirt with women entertainingly too young for you
-- Don't forget the Larry Munson Drinking Game
-- And most of all...a special ECHO CHEER for Larry
The Echo Cheer (I have no idea what else to call it) is the back and forth call from the North Stands to the South Stands of "Georgia/Bulldogs." In my life, I've heard the stadium call only two things..."Georgia/Bulldogs" and "David/Pollack" (vs. Kentucky his last year). I never heard the legendary "Herschel/Walker" or "Terry/Hoage" back and forth calls. And I don't remember it ever happening for Zeier or Vince Dooley.
But it should happen for Larry Munson. And it should be deafening. A round of applause and a long standing ovation just isn't going to cut it. We need a thunderous, multi-minute back and forth during each of the home games. It should be audible from other SEC venues. If you've got a contact with the cheerleaders....make this happen.
And afterwards, if you want to enjoy that Victory Cigar, drink another cold one or smile at another co-ed, then all the better. I think Larry would be into that.
To Larry Munson! The Bill Brasky of Announcers. Let's enjoy this last season together!

Munson Update: Hunker Down One More Time!
![]() |
The AJC has a really nice interview with Scott Howard. He talks about his passion for the Dawgs, and he respectfully excitement over the possibility of filling in for Munson on the road games. I've always liked his work with basketball, and he's a pretty good guy. He's also roughly the same age as Larry was when he came to Georgia.
Mark Bradley also did a piece on Munson yesterday talking about how he can never be replaced. Bill King, the AJC's UGA fan writer, also talks about the difficulty of replacing a legend.
Josh Kendall's update on the story centers around an interview with Neil "Hondo" Williamson of WSB. They remain hopeful that Larry will do home and away games, but it's clear that they're taking it day by day and week to week next year.

Westerdawg on the Radio (also a Munson Update)
It's not totally confirmed, but it sounds like I'll be on Savannah's News/Talk 630 am (WBMQ) Thursday (June 21) sometime between 7:00 and 7:45 am assuming three things:- 1. I'm lucid at that ridiculously early hour
2. Ray Steele will let my sleepy ass on the air
3. Nothing more interesting is going on in the world that needs discussion (unlikely).
Warning: My brother says that I have a face for radio and a voice for the Internet. That's bad news for him since its universally accepted that I'm the good looking one.
I don't think there's audio streaming available. If you tune in, tell me how I did. On second thought....just tell me nice things.
By the way....Munson is probably going to be limited to home games according to the AJC and Macon Telegraph's Josh Kendall. The AJC may have gotten scooped on this to begin with, but they've done an ace job covering the story since. Today's interview with Munson at his home is especially candid. Scott Howard will slide over for Play by Play duties on the road games. No word on the road game color man. Update; The Athens Paper has their interview with Munson up (ht - our commenters)
(Update: I think I did ok. A little stammering in my first answer. But otherwise, ok.)

2007 ESPN College Gameday Location Predictions (Weeks 9-13)
I'm taking a crack at projecting the sites for ESPN's College GameDay's telecasts in 2007. The forecast is rather long so I'm breaking it into three separate posts.Weeks 1-4 were detailed Tuesday, and we discussed Weeks 5-8 on Wednesday. The first post in the series also explains how I came up with these conclusions. I heavily leveraged the LSUsports.net web site for the best composite week to week schedule that I've seen.
With that as a backdrop...here are my predictions for Weeks 9-13...

Rutgers' last big TV appearance was goooooood times
Week 9 (Oct. 27th)
Prediction: West Virginia at Rutgers
Why: Both teams have cupcake schedules leading into this match-up, and both should be ranked pretty high. WVU will likely be ranked in the Top 5 by late October. The Big East really only has one shot at hosting GameDay. The rest of their big games will be on Thursdays. Rutgers has a legit of shot of hosting this one.
Other Candidates: Ohio State at Penn State is a prime time telecast for ABC/ESPN. However, it's unlikely that this game will match two teams as highly rated as the WVU/Rutgers affair. Nebraska at Texas is another one to keep an eye on.

Stay classy Buckeyes
Week 10 (Nov. 3rd)
Prediction: Wisconsin at Ohio State
Why: Really, it's wide open. If Bama is ranked in the Top 25 (a long shot) and LSU is having the season most experts predict, they could end up in Tuscaloosa. Simply because of the great storyline.
Other Candidates: LSU at Bama or Texas A&M at Oklahoma.

Typical Cal fan
Week 11 (Nov. 10th)
Predictions: USC at Cal
Why: This is essentially the Pac-10 Championship Game. You think they're going to miss a big Southern Cal game?
Other Candidates: There aren't many other realistic candidates. Georgia and Auburn would both have to have miracle seasons for GameDay to even consider it. And if we were that good, CBS would televise the game. No way we get to host. FSU at Virginia Tech is another candidate.
Week 12 (Nov. 17)
Prediction: Ohio State at Michigan
Why: Seriously. Do I really need to fill this area out? It's ESPN after all.
Other Candidates: There really isn't one. Miami at VT looks decent. The SEC has a crap schedule this week with UK at Georgia being the possible flagship game.
Week 13 (Nov. 24)
Prediction: No earthly idea
Why: Realistically, it's the most wide open week of the year. There are lots of good games that sound great like FSU at Florida, Oregon at UCLA, OkSU vs. OU, UGA at GT, SC at Clemson, etc. The highest ranked team playing anyone of note will have Corso in attendance. Hell, they could cover the UGA/GT game for all I know.
If I do as horribly on this as I think I'm going to do, I'll not do this is in the future. lol.

Ben Jones Commits to Georgia
- -- Rivals.com: 3 stars and #10 center in the nation
-- Scout.com: 3 stars and the #5 center in the nation
"I think Alabama has two scholarships for linemen this year, and they're holding the last one for Tyler Love. Auburn has one spot, and I think they want Antoine McClain. [It's] a good year to go linemen hunting in Alabama."Any Bama fans that tells you "we didn't want him anyway" is kidding themselves. A few weeks ago, I posted this video of Jones dominating the Scout.com camp at Georgia Tech. When Bama fans found out that Jones was camping in Tuscaloosa, they linked to that video from TiderInsider, Bama's Scout site, Bama's Rivals Site, the Rivals.com national site and other Bama oriented message boards. The fan consensus upon viewing the footage was, "Wow. Let's get this kid an offer now."
Jones grew up a Georgia fan, and his father (who passed away when he was very young) attended Georgia. According to Dean Legge's Scout.com article, Jones actually attended the 2002 Georgia/Bama game in Tuscaloosa wearing a David Greene jersey.
This is a very talented kid with a great motor who was discovered relatively late in the recruiting process. When he got the offer he wanted, he jumped on it. Good for him.
I'm personally thrilled to sign two linemen from Alabama (Owens is the other). Remember all those great Georgia high school players who went to Auburn and played like their hair was on fire against us? It'd be nice to turn some of that motivation around when we play the Tide and Tigers.

2007 ESPN College Gameday Location Predictions (Weeks 5-8)
I'm taking a crack at projecting the sites for ESPN's College GameDay's telecasts in 2007. The forecast is rather long so I'm breaking it into three separate posts.Weeks 1-4 were detailed yesterday. The first post in the series also explains how I came up with these conclusions. I heavily leveraged the LSUsports.net web site for the best composite week to week schedule that I've seen.
(Update: Rumors flying that GameDay will be at VT for the ECU game in Week 1 to honor the VT tragedy. If so, that'll pretty well screw my Week 1 and 2 predictions. That's got to be a record for whiffing. lol.).
With that as a backdrop...here are my predictions for Weeks 5-8...
Week 5 (Sept. 29th)
Prediction: Auburn at Florida
Why: This is a tough one to call. Florida is a Top 10 team in most pre-season polls (ht - heyjennyslater). If they beat Tennessee in Gainesville, this match-up should be the best of the day. This game could also end up being televised on ESPN if CBS takes the FSU vs. Bama (Jacksonville) game as part of the SEC's TV contract.
Other Candidates: Keep your eyes on ND vs. GT and FSU at Clemson in Week 1. If Tech and Clemson win those games and then enter Week 5 undefeated, GameDay would be very tempted to take the ACC match-up since it will definitely be on ABC. The other interesting games of the day are KSU at Texas while Bama faces Florida State in Jacksonville.

Red River Shootout
Week 6 (Oct. 6th)
Prediction: Oklahoma vs. Texas (Dallas)
Why: GameDay has only been to the Red River Shootout twice (2001 and 2002); although, it seems like more times than that. Both Texas and Oklahoma have manageable schedules that should support having 1 loss or fewer between them. That and an ABC TV contract should lock it down.
Other Candidates: Notre Dame at UCLA (ABC 8:00 pm EST) sounds like a great candidate for hosting the show. However, the Irish start the season with GT (home), PSU (road), Michigan (road), Michigan State (home) and Purdue (road). By Week 6, Notre Dame should be so beaten down that the game will have lost all appeal. Virginia Tech at Clemson is also a game to keep your eye on.

Penn State's white out
Week 7 (Oct. 13)
Prediction: Wisconsin at Penn State
Why: In reality, it's wide open this week. The next best game is Georgia Tech at Miami. And I'm not buying that both of those teams will be high enough in the rankings to warrant national attention. This one is any body's guess.
Other Candidates: Texas A&M at Texas Tech, Oregon State at Cal, South Carolina at UNC and Oklahoma State at Nebraska are the types of games available this week. It's a really slow week across the country.
Week 8 (Oct. 20th)
Prediction: Auburn at LSU
Why: If ESPN uses their "wild card" to pick the top SEC game ahead of CBS, they may send GameDay back to Baton Rouge. ESPN has made several repeat visits to campus in a single season over the past few years so it's not unheard of for them to return after the likely Week 2 appearance. This is usually one of the most entertaining SEC games of the season.
Other Candidates: If Cal slips past Tennessee in Week 1 and if UCLA can avoid Karl Dorrell crapping himself, the show could end up broadcasting from Pasadena for Cal at UCLA. USC at ND is extremely unlikely given the shape the Irish will likely be in come Week 8. Plus, that game will be on NBC. Miami at Florida State is another candidate.

Update on Munson Situation from AJC
The AJC has the latest. Apparently, Damon Evans and Larry Munson talked for quite a while on Tuesday morning to discuss contingencies if Munson should decide to step away. I have a feeling that this comes down to the last minute.
Worst case scenario, I hope he agrees to telecast one more home game. That way we can all say Thank You and Farewell properly.
The Athens Banner Herald's editorial comes to a similar conclusion. Unfortunately, the article starts in such a train wreck of uncomfortable and clumsy comments that it's awkward to read.
Here's to Munson. May he take as long as he needs.

Ramblin Wreckage! Tech Students Crash the Wreck

Pre-accident
On Friday afternoon, members of the Ramblin' Wreck Club (the group that keeps up the school's signature vehicle) were heading south of Atlanta with the Ramblin' Wreck in tow for a Wedding. The towing vehicle and the Ramblin' Wreck were both involved in an accident.
No word on whether or not Reuben Houston was the driver. One can only assume he wasn't because there was no police report discussing hundreds of pounds of weed moving south of town.(thankfully no one was hurt b/c that would've been awful...and...ruined all the humor here.)
Per The Hive:
The gist of the accident is that a wheel or axle failed on the trailer and pulled the Expedition off the road at 70mph like a giant sail. There was no warning, no fish-tailing, the truck just snapped at 90 degrees and went off the road. We hit the ditch with the Expedition perpendicular to the road. The trailer swung around, torqued the ball hitch out of the expedition, and tipped over.Now...we get to the absurdity of this Part I.
The truck and trailer ended up pointing against the flow of traffic. The Wreck snapped its straps and fell onto its side. The Expedition and trailer are totaled. We picked the Wreck up from the tow truck place on Saturday and it's in my garage right now. The Wreck is in need of serious body work (I have contacted a body shop). I will get an estimate tomorrow from the body shop.
The Wreck's left side is smashed pretty good and the roof is torn and smashed. None of the windows were broken, the motor is fine, and the frame is fine.
The problem arises now that because of the complexity of the accident, insurance does not cover the Wreck. It was not driving so auto insurance doesn't cover it and cargo insurance does not cover automobiles. We will have to use appearance money and emergency funds to start the rebuild.LMAO! You can insure a woman's legs, a child's smile or a kitten...and you can't insure the signature emblem of your entire athletic program?
I have spoken with [our athletic director], the Alumni Association, and you all. If anyone else knows, it's because they've called me recently or talked to a Sheriff or tow trucker in Forsyth. There are no pictures available to the public. The best part....they are holding an ONLINE FUNDRAISER via PayPal to pay for the Car Repairs!
Where to Begin?:
1. The Pictures -- the Georgia Sports Blog is now offering a $100 bounty for those pictures. If you live near this kid, know the towing company or the repair shop, then get in there and take care of business. Realistically, a Damn Good Dawg would do it for free. More realistically, I could host a counter fundraiser to the Tech Effort and raise more cash to pay for the pics than GT fans will raise to pay for the repairs. (But that's a huge hassle)
2. The Insurance -- In fairness, the car is probably ineligible for insurance. Much like many of Tech's players. If the NCAA called, I'm sure they would've told them it's all good.
3. A Fundraiser -- Why the hell isn't Tech's athletic director just stroking a check? It's THE most recognizable thing about Tech other than their effeminate mascot. I guess they could've hosted a car wash to raise cash, but they don't have a ride. Maybe a Bake Sale would work?
I wonder if Mudcat Elmore's car was in hot pursuit? Ideally, it looks like this now....

The perfect look

Thou Shalt Not Covet: Thy Neighbor's Players
Peter Bean at BurntOrangeNation.com pulled together an interesting concept for a blog article. I'm just going to pretend that it's a roundtable topic, and I'm stealing the headline. Looking around our neighbors, what players do you covet the most?
My List:
1. Darren McFadden (Arkansas RB) - If the list didn't begin here, it wouldn't be worth reading. For my money, he's the best player in the country in 2007. I like Lumpkin, Brown, Moreno and King, but comparing them to McFadden is like comparing the car in your driveway to Jeff Gordon's Monte Carlo.
2. Andre Smith (Bama's OT) - During 2006, the Super Sophomore looked like one of the most dominating true freshmen OTs in many years. He was the lone bright spot on an otherwise horrific Bama offensive line. The big fella is reportedly in better shape this season, and he's already on every national watch list of interest. He would immediately start for the Dawgs at Left Tackle, and we'd all feel a lot better about next season without a true freshman OT starting for us.

Quentin Groves. The baddest 40 year old in the SEC.
3. Quentin Groves (Auburn DE) - It seems that Groves has been at Auburn since Stan White's freshman year. Withmore than 243 games so many games under his belt, the 38 year old senior defensive end has the experience, strength, size and speed that Georgia needs at the Rush End position. The alternative is starting 230 lbs (dripping wet) Marcus Howard for Georgia. Howard is a nice 3rd and long pass rusher, but watching him get mauled by big SEC OTs on running plays isn't pretty.
LSU WRs. Go figure.
4. Earl Bennett (WR, Vandy) - I could have just as easily listed Early Doucet at LSU. While Bennett doesn't have the top end speed of Doucet, I can't help but think of "The Kneel" when I think LSU receivers. (See above)

Jasper Brinkley
5. Jasper Brinkley (MLB, SC) - Maybe Brandon Miller is Ray Lewis meets Mike Singletary (without the bad glasses and bloody knife). But I like the way the run stuffing Gamecock plays. I thought about listing Phillip Wheeler (LB, Georgia Tech). He would've been an excellent choice as well.
Who are your Top 3-5 players from our rivals / neighbors? That you would love to see wearing Red and Black.

2007 ESPN College Gameday Location Predictions (Weeks 1-4)
I'm going to take a crack at projecting the sites for ESPN's College GameDay's telecasts in 2007. The forecast is rather long so I'm going to break it into three separate posts. My assumptions are built on GameDay attempting to balance the desire to showcase the best game of the week with the business need of promoting games on their own family of networks (ABC, ESPN and ESPN2).Last year, GameDay televised games from competing network sites for LSU at Florida on CBS and Tennessee at South Carolina (CBS...I think). In 2005, they were at three competing network sites.
The most outrageous example of being in the wrong town was the Sept. 16, 2006 telecast which showcased #4 USC hosted #19 Nebraska. That was the same day that #6 LSU played at #3 Auburn (CBS); #11 Michigan played at #2 Notre Dame (NBC); and #7 Florida played at #13 Tennessee (CBS).
I heavily leveraged the LSUsports.net web site for the best composite week to week schedule that I've seen. With that as a backdrop...here are my predictions for Weeks 1-4...

Cal Memorial Stadium
Projection: Tennessee at Cal
Why: It's a near mortal lock. The only match-up of that Saturday putting two Top 25 teams against each other, and it's the ABC 8:00 pm (EST) game of the week. (Update: Cal is expecting it to happen)
Darkhorse: None.

LSU's Tiger Stadium
Week 2 (Sept. 8)
Projection: Virginia Tech at LSU
Why: A cross region battle of near consensus Top 10 teams televised on ESPN at 9:15 pm (EST). Combine the football aspects with the overwhelmingly compelling Virginia Tech tragedy story, and you have another near lock.
Darkhorse: Normally, Miami at Oklahoma, Notre Dame at Penn State, and Oregon at Michigan would all make great candidates for host sites. But Miami, ND and Oregon are all consensus projections to start the season outside of the Top 25.
Week 3: (Sept. 15)
Projection: USC at Nebraska
Why: The Trojans will start the season at #1, and the Huskers look to come into this game 2-0 with a ranking around 15-18th. The game is already confirmed for 8:00 pm on ABC. The Big Red crowd will be nuts in the early morning as it'll be Gameday's first trip back to Lincoln since the OU game in 2001.
Darkhorses: Notre Dame at Michigan and Tennessee at Florida. If Notre Dame can upset Georgia Tech and Penn State in weeks 1 and 2, the GameDay crew would have a tough decision to make. However, there are several games that look appealing for visits to Michigan's campus this year so even early ND momentum may not keep the GameDay crew away from UM. Tennessee at UF looks unlikely as it's a CBS game.

The Big House
Week 4 (Sept. 22)
Projection: Penn State at Michigan
Why: Penn State should be moving up the polls at a nice clip if they beat the Irish at home in Week 2. Michigan will have an excellent shot at being a Top 3-5 team for this ABC televised game. This is another very easy to project game.
Other Candidates: Unlike Weeks 5 and 6, it's not a very sexy week for college football match-ups. UGA at Alabama isn't totally out of the question if both teams roll into the game undefeated. Iowa at Wisconsin isn't totally out of the question given that it's ABC's 8:00 pm (EST) Prime Time telecast, but it seems a reach.
During Weeks 5 and 6, things start to get much more interesting.
In the coming articles, we'll discuss Weeks 5-8. We'll also look and see if there's any realistic shot of Athens hosting GameDay this year. Our last and only host game was the 1998 Tennessee debacle. More tomorrow.

Richt tells Ben Jones "You Complete Me"
"Today...our little 'project'...our 'offensive line'... had a very big day. But it wasn't complete....It wasn't nearly close to being in the same vicinity as complete.Ok, that's not really what happened. Richt didn't actually drop the Jerry Maguire living room speech on Jones, but it's not that far off. The AJC says that Jones, who is shooting up the recruiting rankings, dominated the Georgia camp, and he got his scholarship offer.
I couldn't hear your voice. Screaming "NEXT!" to defensive tackles. I couldn't laugh and watch you toss 5 star DTs like so many sacks of taters. I...I missed my future center.
We live in a competitive world. A world where Neil Callaway didn't recruit many guys like you....I don't want you...I need you. You. Complete. Me." -- Mark Richt to Ben Jones at UGA's Camp

No. The other one.
Dean Legge of DawgPost.com offers this analogy..."Nick Jones' size with a David Pollack-like attitude." Damn. That'll work.
Rivals has moved him up to the #10 Center prospect in the nation. We should know his final destination in a couple of weeks.

Dawgs Land 15th Commitment: Bryce Ros
Bryce Ros, son of Frank Ros (Captain of Georgia's National Championship '80 Squad) commited to play football for Georgia (scout.com). Per the AJC's article on Bryce's recruitment:"Bryce didn't want for much. Even at 4, what he wanted most wasn't some colorful, noisy bauble. All he wanted was to watch the VHS tape of the 1980 Georgia title game...."Four or five times a day he would just sit there and watch it," Frank said. "He knew everything they said on that," Jan added. "He knew every word, every play, everything that was going to happen."You can't beat recruiting talented kids who bleed red and black from birth. Bryce had offers from Bama, Auburn, Clemson, UNC and others. This isn't some favor to his old man. This kid can play.
With Ros and Dwayne Allen (TE from North Carolina) committed, you have to image we're full when it comes to that postition for the '08 class.

Stepping out of the Shadows: The Sophomores

Asher Allen and Kris Durham from GDay 2006
Over the coming days and weeks, we're going to look at the Georgia Bulldog football players who are the most likely to take huge steps out of the shadows into prime time roles.
Let's say a player was a starter for a year or two, but he really hasn't made an impact yet. That kid can still step up and make a big name for himself. We're going to break the posts down by class. Last week, we profiled the redshirt freshmen.
Out of the Shadows: The Sophomores
1. Darius Dewberry (SAM) - Over the past two seasons, it sometimes looked as if Georgia was playing 10 vs. 11 on defense b/c of the lack of plays coming from the SAM linebacker position. UGA desperately needs this 5 star all-everything recruit to change that situation. Last year, Dewberry's (6-3, 230 lbs) playing time was primarily limited to special teams and spot action. This year, he'll be counted on to start. He brings a tremendous upgrade in speed to the position from Brandon Miller. He also has the physical tools to one day have an impact like Boss Bailey in 2002; however, there's a quantum difference between having the tools and delivering those results. (Side Image: Jim Hipple)2. Geno Atkins (DT) - The DTs as a group last year were pretty underwhelming. Granted, they were very young and often injured, but at least one of them must step up in a huge way. Atkins (6-1, 275 lbs) will have every opportunity to be that guy. The Florida native will compete with Jeff Owens and Kade Weston for a starting position. With the departure of Ray Gant, there are plenty of minutes available for the true sophomore.
3. Asher Allen (CB) - Allen enrolled early at Georgia last year in order to participate in Spring Practice. He opened eyes with his blistering speed when he took an interception 100+ yards for a touchdown at G-Day 2006 (see photo above). With the departure of Paul Oliver, Allen gets first crack at the CB slot opposite Bryan Evans. He may also get a look at kickoff returner.
4. Prince Miller (CB) - Miller is aggressively pulling more and more playing at the nickel spot. Despite his small stature (5'8", 182 lbs), he has the speed and relative strength to make plays in the SEC. He is battling Asher Allen to move up a spot on the CB pecking order.
5. Kris Durham (WR) - Durham (6-5, 193 lbs) is the trendy pick to make a big splash in 2007 because of his impressive G-Day performance (6 rec, 137 yards, 2 TDs). I'd love for that to happen, but how many times has a guy who did nothing the year before AND most of the following spring exploded during the Spring Game never to be heard from again? Ronnie Powell, Johnny Brown, Jason Johnson and even in Kenneth Harris had a year like that only to follow it up with very little production. It's a crowded WR group, and Richt is eager to find a consistent performer. Durham has just as good a chance as anyone else to be that guy.
I could go either way on Weston. If you consider him still "in the shadows," then I'd list him as tied with Atkins at #2. Our DT depth must improve, and one of them has to step way up.
Thoughts?

If UGA scheduled a 2 for 1 series....
So the question is...if UGA had to do a 2 for 1 deal with a non-conference team for scheduling purposes, who would you want Damon Evans to book? Background:
We've written several articles lately on scheduling in football. The most in-depth article talked about the complexities of scheduling non-conference home games. Particularly, "beat down" games.
With 65 BCS teams plus Notre Dame all looking for 2-4 out of conference home games per year that don't involve a return trip, the cost of booking that 11th and 12th game has skyrocketed. The elite mid-majors are now pulling 1 for 1 deals with power schools, and schools much lower on the totem poll are pulling 2 for 1 deals.
A 2 for 1 deal involves the bigger school hosting two games at home and traveling to the smaller school once. Over the past year, Georgia announced plans both plans to play Oregon State and Cincinnati in 2 for 1 arrangements. Both deals promptly fell apart.
My Top Choices for 2 for 1 deals:
- 1. Memphis: I'm pretty sure that Tennessee already books these guys in a similar rotation. Memphis is a great town to visit, it's not a bad drive, airfare from ATL is super cheap via AirTran, there's great BBQ and of course you have Elvis. We could do much worse. Plus, the Liberty Bowl is a large enough college football facility to accommodate the game.
2. UNLV: No brainer. If we made it to the stadium, it would be a miracle.
3. Tulane: Ok, this will not happen. When Tulane canceled a 2 for 1 deal with us prior to the 2002 season, they pretty much tore their britches with Georgia. I doubt we'd schedule them in hop scotch at this point. Much less football. But you can't go wrong with a trip to New Orleans.

Just screams college football doesn't it?
4. Hawaii - Realistically, few of us would make the trip, but what a trip it would be. I'd be hard pressed to miss this one. I'd rank it higher, but so few would go. Bama fans enjoyed their deal.
5. TCU: A reasonably strong team at the top end of the non-BCS world. Dallas/Ft. Worth is easy enough to get to. Plus, there's always the option of playing in the Cowboys facility if TCU's place is too small.
6. Louisiana Tech: I could live with throwing Derek Dooley, new La Tech head coach, a bone and giving him a deal like this. However, the caveat would have to be playing the game in New Orleans. La Tech would probably never agree to the deal as their campus is about 5 hours from NOLA.
7. Colorado State: I'm pretty sure that Damon mentioned something about talking with these guys around the time the 12 game schedule was released. Ft. Collins is only an hour
8. Cincy: I know they canceled once already, but I'd still be down with going up there. The town is a Delta hub so travel is easy. Plus, they were going to play us in the Bengals stadium for the return trip.

Looking back at Pre-Season Polls
DawgsOnline.com has an interesting article up looking back at pre-season polls. The article discusses which teams are historically over/underrated. To say more would be to reveal too much of the content. Good read.

Georgia Football Scheduling Trivia

Clemson vs. UGA '03
With Georgia upgrading its non-conference schedule, I thought I'd take a minute to research some useless trivia about the historical out of conference games played by Georgia.
UGA's most played non-conference opponents who still actively play football are (Includes Bowls):
- 1. Georgia Tech* - 101 games
2. Clemson - 62 (last played 2003)
3. North Carolina - 30 (last played 1971)
4. Tulane* - 25 (last played 1985)
4. Furman - 23 (last played 1950)
5.
6. Virginia - 19 (last played 2000)
7. Miami (Fla.) - 12 (last played 1966)
8 (tie) Florida State - 11 (last played 2002)
8 (tie) Yale - 11 (last played 1934)
10. The Citadel - (last played 1958)
*Many games with GT and Tulane were played prior to their respective departures from the SEC.
- South Carolina - The Dawgs have played the Gamecocks 59 times, but 44 of those match-ups took place prior to the chickens joining the SEC in 1992. I would wager that few teams have three non-conference opponents with 40+ games played against them (GT, SC and Clemson). Vince Dooley and Georgia were the chief sponsors for South Carolina's admission into the SEC. You'd think they could show some gratitude. Overall record 44-13-2. 11-4 in SEC play.
- Clemson - From 1920-1973, Georgia ran up a blistering 21-1-1 record against the Tigers. The series was played almost every year from 1962-1991. The series turned in 1974 with a Tiger victory, and it stayed fairly even until '91. Under the lights in Athens, Georgia began its current 5 game winning streak. Record: 41-17-4
- Tulane - Tulane left the SEC in 1966, and we've only played them 5 times since their departure. Oddly enough, the two teams faced each other in New Haven, Connecticut in 1932. I have no idea why. We tried to book at 2 for 1 with them for '02, '03 and '08, but they cancelled at the last minute leaving the Dawgs high and dry.
- Miami - All 12 games were played in Miami. Most of them were booked by Wally Butts, and quite a few were played *after* the Georgia Tech game. UGA is 7-4-1 vs. the Canes.
- North Carolina - The Bulldogs have played the Tar Heels 30 times in 7 different cities (Athens, Chapel Hill, Jacksonville, Atlanta, Macon, New Orleans and Raleigh). Record: 16-12-2
- Yale - Of the 11 match-ups with Yale, only the 1929 game was in Athens. The others were all at Yale. The '29 game was the grand opening of Sanford Stadium.
- Mississippi State - UGA has only played MSU 21 times despite both schools being charter members of the Southeastern Conference. The league didn't establish a firm rotation of conference opponents until the 1970s or 80s. GT has only played MSU *twice* all-time and only once while they were both SEC members from 1929-until GT's departure in the 60s.
- Tennessee -- The Dawgs have played the Vols 36 times, but we had only played 21 times prior to SEC expansion in '92. That's right...we had played UVA and North Carolina more frequently. Odd huh?
- LSU - Georgia has only played the Bayou Bengals 26 times, and we've only met four times in the regular season since conference expansion in '92. That's an freakish occurance due to the SEC switching from a 5-1-2 divisional rotation to a 5-2-1 rotation in '02. We didn't play the Tigers from 1954-1977.
- Arkansas - The Razorbacks and Dawgs have only tangled 11 times; however, we've met in seven different cities including Fayetteville, Athens, Dallas, Shreveport, Memphis, New Orleans and Atlanta.

Next Generation Georgia Sports Blog Coming?
This site could be on the cusp of a large overhaul very soon. NOTE: The web address of the Georgia Sports Blog will NOT be changing anytime soon. Here's a working demo of the new look as it exists now.
- PWD Test Site
-- Do Not Link To This Temp Site
The Purpose of the Upgrade:
The upgrade should provide more "above the fold" screen real estate, widen the overall frame, improve navigation and let me present ads better. Moving from two columns to three columns via the new blogger template ain't the easiest thing in the world, but that's my goal.
Please feel free to give me feedback on the new site design. The working demo lacks many bells and whistles, a full blown blog roll/link list, ads, a new logo, etc. But the demo combined with the image above should give you a clear idea of where I'm heading. All feedback is welcome either in the comments or via email.
No ETA on the upgrade. You'll just login one day and it'll be rocking. In the meantime, let me know what you think.
Thanks.
