Georgia lands Commit #17
Coach Richt is getting closer and closer to filling up the 2008 recruiting class. Marcus Dowtin (6'2" 215 lb linebacker) is a rising senior at Fork Union Military Academy gave his verbal to the Georgia coaching staff today.
Note: He's not involved in Fork Union's post-graduate program. He actually attends high school there. It's a similar recruitment path that Ray Gant took to Georgia.
According to the Athens Banner-Herald, Dowtin also plays running back for Fork Union. Maryland offered him as a running back. Clemson, Michigan and Virginia offered as a linebacker.

SEC Scheduling News: Auburn adds home and home with Clemson

Tractor Porn seems appropriate for this post
Auburn continues the SEC trend of taking advantage of the 12th game to book a quality non-conference opponent. After wussing out on the non-conference slate from '04-'07, the Tigers are stepping up. They will play Clemson in 2010 (at AU) and 2011 (at CU). For Clemson this series replaces the recently cancelled match-up with Pitt.
Winner gets the lake.
Auburn's non-conference opponents:
- 2007 - Kansas State, USF + 2 jobbers (all home)
2008 - West Virginia, Southern Miss + 2 jobbers (all home)
2009 - West Virginia, Southern Miss + 2 jobbers (only WVU away)
2010 - Clemson (home)
2011 - Clemson (away)
- 2008 -- Citadel (H), UCF (H), vs. La. Tech (at Shreveport), SC (H)
2009 -- La. Tech (H), MTSU (H), CMU (H), at SC
2010 -- at Auburn, SC (H)
2011 -- Auburn (H), at SC
2012 -- at Vandy, SC (H)
2013 -- Vandy (H), Georgia (H), at SC
2014 -- at Georgia, SC (H)
2015 -- Mississippi (H), at SC
2016 -- at Mississippi, SC (H)
- Auburn: 2006, 2007 -- Auburn dropped series.
Ball State: 2010 (H)
Oklahoma: 2008 (A), 2011 (H) -- Clemson dropped series.
Pittsburgh: 2009 (H), 2010 (A) -- Clemson dropped series.
Troy: 2011 (H) -- Troy dropped series.

Auburn building $92 million Basketball Arena and Practice Facility

Image: Scout.com
Auburn has finally approved plans to build a new arena for basketball. It won't open til the 2010-2011 season. Per SI.com, the project includes:
The plan calls for a basketball-only arena, including practice facilities, offices, dressing rooms, luxury suites and seats close to the floor. Athletic director Jay Jacobs said the tentative plan is for 9,600 seats, some 900 fewer than Beard-Eaves.Auburn is issuing around $60 million in municipal bonds to pay for part of the construction. A series of questions comes to mind upon learning that fact:
It would be the SEC's second-smallest arena, ahead of Mississippi's Tad Smith Coliseum, which seats 8,700.
- 1. What kind of person buys stock in Auburn? That's like investing in an asbestos wholesaler or short-selling Exxon. If Bobby Lowder dies or gets pissed and writes Auburn out of his will, they won't be able to pay.
2. Where's the $60 million going to come from? After paying Saban, there's no money left in the State of Alabama system.
3. If they try selling naming rights, who are they going to call? John Deere? Natural Light? Skoal?
As it relates to UGA:
- Our new practice facility for basketball will soon have its grand opening. We spent $30 million on the project. Chip Towers took a tour recently, and he said that it's amazing. I walked around it two weeks ago, and I'm thrilled with the progress.
- There is no announced time table for renovating Stegeman. However, Auburn and Ole Miss were tied for the most rancid, disgusting hoops arenas in the SEC. While the practice facility is amazing, we're right there with Miss State and Bama for the next most sucky arena. If AU is upgrading, that raises the expectations for us, and I think the pressure is on Damon to produce a timeline.
- There is no chance that we will build a new arena. First, there's no new place to put it on UGA owned property. Second, we just built the practice facility and a new parking deck right next to Stegeman. Why would we move the arena elsewhere? Third, tearing it down and building on the same spot would probably double or triple the cost and we'd be playing hoops in Gwinnett for 4 or 5 years if we started over on the same spot. I'd wager that an aggressive renovation could happen for $30-40 million, and you wouldn't even recognize the place. Plus, we'd only have to play in Gwinnett for two years.
- I do like the idea of building a smaller arena for Auburn. South Carolina and Tennessee both built arenas far too large for their needs, and the massive number of empty seats is sort of an anchor on the program. If we renovate, I hope we don't go over 12k or so. I'd rather have a packed house and a waiting list than empty seats.

GameDay is opening at Virginia Tech vs. ECU
ESPN College GameDay will open the season at Virginia Tech for their match-up with East Carolina. So much for my predictions.
That shoots at least two if not three weeks out of the water right out of the gate. They're going to cover the emotional story of the Hokies instead of the UT vs. Cal game. The common thinking was that they would cover the VT story in Week 2 at LSU.
As one VT fan said, "This way, they're much more likely to get a happy ending vs. the outcome in Baton Rouge."
All the best to the VT people as they continue their healing process.

UGA vs. GT Tickets Now Available from Tech's Website
Georgia Tech is now selling tickets to the UGA game on its web site. The ticket is available via the three game "Flex Pack" via their web site. You can buy the tickets by going here.
The Flex Pack allows you to buy tickets for any 3 games, and GT varies prices for games based on demand. For instance the UGA game cost $50 while VT (Thursday, Nov. 1st at 7:30 pm) and Clemson cost $45. I think Samford costs around $28. In other words, you can go the cheaper route and get UGA + Samford + Army and save a few bucks. Or you can go UGA + VT + Clemson (or UNC) and get the better games.
The better games total out to be $140 for the 3 games (total) + $10 shipping (per order). The cheaper games...obviously cost less. ;)
If you want slightly better tickets, you could contribute a few extra bucks to the "TECH Fund" and get better seats for $25 or so. I'm not sure how that works, but the idea of contributing on top of buying tix to a game I'll never see (clemson), made me puke a little in my own mouth.
Great seats near the UGA band were still available as of 12:30 am on June 28th.
The Virginia Tech game is appealing on Thursday night b/c it's the week after UGA vs. UF, and our very appearance during one of their games causes them deep distress. Good times.
If you need help dumping your Clemson or other game tix, you can feel free to list your extras on StubHub.com. Just go to the link and click "sell" for the games in question. It's pretty easy.
Let's fill Bobby Dodd with Red. Like normal.

Drew Landers Update
As we discussed earlier today, the son of Georgia women's basketball coach Andy Landers was in the intensive care unit of Grady Memorial Hospital in Atlanta on Monday after sustaining head trauma Sunday evening in a car-truck collision in Alabama. Here are updates from the Athens Banner Herald and the AJC on Drew's condition.
Per the AJC:
"Drew sustained a head injury in the collision as well as a bruised lung. Other than that, there does not appear to be any additional injuries of consequence," Andy Landers said in a statement issued through the athletics association. "There has been no surgery and none scheduled at this point. The doctors and medical personnel at Grady Health System have been outstanding and from conversations with them we are very optimistic about his prognosis for recovery."Per the Athens Banner Herald:
"Things are good; he's stable," Andy Landers said Monday afternoon from the hospital. "There aren't really any indicators that there is going to be anything permanent or sustained from it. I'll feel a lot better saying that (tomorrow) than I do today."Landers was one of three North Oconee High School students injured in a crash in Oxford, Ala., that killed junior varsity basketball coach Shawn Smith. The other two students were released from the hospital. The driver/assistant coach passed away. No word on funeral arrangements yet for Smith.
Drew Landers is being kept sedated and breathing with the help of oxygen tubes, his father said. Andy Landers said he expected his son to spend about a week at Grady. There is a risk with head injuries of seizures for seven to 10 days, Landers said.

Andy Landers' son involved in Car Crash
(UPDATE AVAILABLE HERE)
Rather than misreport any of this, I'm going to cut and paste from the AJC's article (something I never do for trademark reasons). The link will likely be updated throughout the day. I won't be providing regular updates to this because I don't want to be wrong or screw up via typos or anything else. Check back with the AJC during the day for more info.
N. Oconee high school coach killed in crashThoughts and prayers go out to the Landers, Firth, Ross and Smith families. I'll aggregate links to this story tonight.
Son of UGA women's basketball coach among injured
By CHIP TOWERS
The Atlanta Journal-Constitution
Published on: 06/25/07
ATHENS — Drew Landers, the son of Georgia women's basketball coach Andy Landers, was in critical but stable condition in an intensive care unit at Grady Memorial Hospital, a hospital spokesperson told the Atlanta Journal-Constitution Monday morning.
Drew Landers, a rising senior at North Oconee High School, was one of three passengers in a Honda Accord that was struck head-on by a tractor-trailer on Interstate 20 in Oxford, Ala., Sunday evening. Shawn Smith, an assistant basketball coach at North Oconee who was driving the Accord, was killed.
Students David Firth and Ja'Rius Ross were also injured in the crash and were transported to Northeast Alabama Regional Medical Center in Anniston, Ala. They were treated and released, according to the hospital.
Claude Felton, a spokesperson for the Georgia Athletics Association, said federal laws prevented him from disclosing details of Drew Landers' condition. However, he did say he received a text message from Coach Landers early Monday morning that indicated Drew Landers, who was life-flighted from Anniston to Atlanta overnight, got "a good report" from Grady doctors and would recover from his injuries.
Andy Landers did not immediately return messages left on his cell phone.
According to Calhoun County coroner Pat Brown, the crash occurred about 5 p.m. on I-20 in Oxford, about 12 miles from Jacksonville State University where the North Oconee basketball team was attending a summer camp.
The tractor-trailer driving in the westbound lane apparently crossed the median into the eastbound lane and struck the car head-on, Brown said.
The Associated Press contributed to this report.

Who's Blown Out the Most in the SEC?

Richt holds up 1 finger for each of Nutt's blowouts
Phillip Marshall of the Huntsville Times wrote an interesting piece about the frequency that certain SEC coaches get blown out. Per his article:
For the comparison to be fair, I limited it to coaches who have spent at least five seasons in the SEC. I limited my research to the last five seasons each coach spent in the SEC. I didn't look at coaches from Vanderbilt, the Mississippi schools or Kentucky for obvious reasons. I also decided a "blowout" would be a game in which a team lost by 14 points or more.Richt came out *extremely* well.
That left me with Tuberville, Alabama's Nick Saban (from his LSU days), Georgia's Mark Richt, Tennessee's Phillip Fulmer, Arkansas' Houston Nutt and South Carolina's Steve Spurrier (at South Carolina and Florida). When I began to look through the records, I really wasn't sure what to expect.
- 1. Nutt, 10 blowouts (no shocker there)
2. Saban, 9
3. Fulmer and Tuberville, 8
5. Spurrier, 6
6. Richt, 3

Gamecocks Announce Future Schedules
I missed this a few weeks ago. But it's interesting to see what the Gamecocks are doing from a scheduling standpoint thru 2016. It shows a mix of quality intra-regional match-ups, well located mid-tier regional games, mind numbing boredom and Div I-AA beat downs to compliment the Clemson series. It's basically all over the place.
South Carolina's Future Schedules:2007 2008 2009 2010 2011 Clemson (H) Clemson (A) Clemson (H) Clemson (A) Clemson (H) UNC (A) NC State (H) NC State (A) UNC (H) UL-L (H) UAB (H) Troy (H) ECU (Charlotte) SC State (H) Wofford (H) Citadel (H) Furman (H) SC State (H) 2012 2013 2014 2015 2016 Clemson (A) Clemson (H) Clemson (A) Clemson(H) Clemson (A) ECU (Char.) ECU (H) Troy (H) ECU (A) ECU (H) Wofford (H) Citadel (H) Furman (H)
I've said numerous times that booking games with non-conference schools in border states is the best way for Spurrier to off set the limited in state talent pool and expand his recruiting footprint. Thus, the UNC and NC State series are a great fit for the Gamecocks.
I also like the unique 2-2-1 series with East Carolina that has 2 games at home, 2 in the fertile recruiting area of Charlotte and 1 at ECU. I think that it's a smart move by their AD. I'd crap a brick if Damon pulled this move at Georgia, but it does make sense for the Coots given their where they are as a program. Obviously...not all SC fans agree with me. Others just don't like dealing with Skip Holtz, ECU's head coach (as if he'll be there in five years).
I also can't poke fun at their Div I-AA games as it looks like UGA and many of our neighbors are going to book one Div I-AA game per year from now on. But you do have to hope they'll continue to step up and schedule aggressively post 2010. If their future schedules look more like the 2014 and less like 2010 (see chart above), they're not exactly reaching for the stars.
A great fit for them scheduling wise would be Georgia Tech. The two schools played each other eight times in the 70s while both were wandering the wilderness as independents, and they played four more times in the late 80s-early 90s before SEC expansion.
It'll be interesting to see how the schedules unfold for our SEC brethren.

Daily Munson Update

The AJC's Chip Towers, who is doing a great job on this story, uses his blog to add some color to the Munson situation for 2007.
Anyway, as Hondo explains it, Munson has an “open agreement” with the UGAA and WSB and can pretty much do whatever he wants when it comes to announcing Georgia’s games.Towers also mentions how the Charleston fires that killed 9 fire fighters affected AJ Green, UGA WR recruit. Green's mentor was killed in the blaze.
“Everybody wants it to be definitive, to be black and white,” Hondo told me. “But that’s not the way it is. Right now, Larry’s saying he doesn’t want to do road games and that’s fine. But if we get to the fourth week of the season and Larry says, ‘you know what, I feel pretty good and I think want to go to Tuscaloosa and do the Alabama game.’ We’re not going to say no to that. Of course we’d want him there. So I think it’s going to be more of a wait-and-see thing.”
Across the Southeast, the Jacksonville Times-Union really tore into the Athens Banner Herald's John Kaltefleiter over his article earlier in the week. As I said at the time, I think Kaltefleiter started his article off very awkwardly, but I don't think he meant for it to come off nearly as disrespectful as he did.
I don't envy ANYONE writing an opinion piece for Munson right now b/c you're worried that every last word is going to come off wrong or be over analyzed. I must have edited my piece a dozen times. That's why I didn't throw Kaltefleiter under the bus. I think he made a bad call wit his intro. Not an error of meanness.
Speaking of opinion pieces on Munson. Kyle King has an open letter to Damon Evans on the topic of replacing Munson. The only thing I disagree with is this common expectation that we're going to hire a homer. That may be, but even Munson didn't start off as a raging homer. By his own admission, he didn't jump the shark into unabashed fan until the '73 Tennessee game in Knoxville...roughly 7 years after taking the job.
The Jax paper also has a quick article on Munson just working home games. Did you know that Munson was briefly the voice of the USFL's Jacksonville Bulls? There's a deep cut random tidbit.
And on the warm and fuzzy side, Darrell Huckaby has an editorial on Munson in the Gwinnett Daily Post.

I'm shocked that Tech didn't sell out their allotment of Reggie Ball jerseys. Shocked I tell you! Consider the perfection of this photo:
- 1. Reggie's jersey is 50% off. Tech fans think he has half a brain.

Munson should be celebrated. Not mourned

Good old Larry (Image: SI.com)
From looking at the message boards and listening to sports talk, you'd think that Munson had already passed. So many folks speaking in such dark, depressing tones.
Folks, Larry Munson is alive and looking to go out (professionally) on his own terms. Or pretty close to it. We should all be so lucky.
We all knew this day was coming. He doesn't own a time machine, a fountain of youth or even a flux capacitor. He was going to retire at some point. The circumstances certainly aren't ideal, but it's manageable.
Don't misunderstand me...I want Larry to get healthy, feel better and stay engaged with the program for as long as he wants. I'm with Damon Evans who said, "If he wants to call the games til he's 106, that's fine with me." But regardless of how this shakes out....
Not preemptively mourning him.
Here's my Recommendation for LarryFest Tour 2007***:
-- Enjoy an extra stiff cocktail in Larry's honor
-- Pack a nice cigar for post-game celebrations
-- Flirt with women entertainingly too young for you
-- Don't forget the Larry Munson Drinking Game
-- And most of all...a special ECHO CHEER for Larry
The Echo Cheer (I have no idea what else to call it) is the back and forth call from the North Stands to the South Stands of "Georgia/Bulldogs." In my life, I've heard the stadium call only two things..."Georgia/Bulldogs" and "David/Pollack" (vs. Kentucky his last year). I never heard the legendary "Herschel/Walker" or "Terry/Hoage" back and forth calls. And I don't remember it ever happening for Zeier or Vince Dooley.
But it should happen for Larry Munson. And it should be deafening. A round of applause and a long standing ovation just isn't going to cut it. We need a thunderous, multi-minute back and forth during each of the home games. It should be audible from other SEC venues. If you've got a contact with the cheerleaders....make this happen.
And afterwards, if you want to enjoy that Victory Cigar, drink another cold one or smile at another co-ed, then all the better. I think Larry would be into that.
To Larry Munson! The Bill Brasky of Announcers. Let's enjoy this last season together!

Munson Update: Hunker Down One More Time!
![]() |
The AJC has a really nice interview with Scott Howard. He talks about his passion for the Dawgs, and he respectfully excitement over the possibility of filling in for Munson on the road games. I've always liked his work with basketball, and he's a pretty good guy. He's also roughly the same age as Larry was when he came to Georgia.
Mark Bradley also did a piece on Munson yesterday talking about how he can never be replaced. Bill King, the AJC's UGA fan writer, also talks about the difficulty of replacing a legend.
Josh Kendall's update on the story centers around an interview with Neil "Hondo" Williamson of WSB. They remain hopeful that Larry will do home and away games, but it's clear that they're taking it day by day and week to week next year.

Westerdawg on the Radio (also a Munson Update)
It's not totally confirmed, but it sounds like I'll be on Savannah's News/Talk 630 am (WBMQ) Thursday (June 21) sometime between 7:00 and 7:45 am assuming three things:
- 1. I'm lucid at that ridiculously early hour
2. Ray Steele will let my sleepy ass on the air
3. Nothing more interesting is going on in the world that needs discussion (unlikely).
Warning: My brother says that I have a face for radio and a voice for the Internet. That's bad news for him since its universally accepted that I'm the good looking one.
I don't think there's audio streaming available. If you tune in, tell me how I did. On second thought....just tell me nice things.
By the way....Munson is probably going to be limited to home games according to the AJC and Macon Telegraph's Josh Kendall. The AJC may have gotten scooped on this to begin with, but they've done an ace job covering the story since. Today's interview with Munson at his home is especially candid. Scott Howard will slide over for Play by Play duties on the road games. No word on the road game color man. Update; The Athens Paper has their interview with Munson up (ht - our commenters)

2007 ESPN College Gameday Location Predictions (Weeks 9-13)
I'm taking a crack at projecting the sites for ESPN's College GameDay's telecasts in 2007. The forecast is rather long so I'm breaking it into three separate posts.
Weeks 1-4 were detailed Tuesday, and we discussed Weeks 5-8 on Wednesday. The first post in the series also explains how I came up with these conclusions. I heavily leveraged the LSUsports.net web site for the best composite week to week schedule that I've seen.
With that as a backdrop...here are my predictions for Weeks 9-13...
Rutgers' last big TV appearance was goooooood times
Week 9 (Oct. 27th)
Prediction: West Virginia at Rutgers
Why: Both teams have cupcake schedules leading into this match-up, and both should be ranked pretty high. WVU will likely be ranked in the Top 5 by late October. The Big East really only has one shot at hosting GameDay. The rest of their big games will be on Thursdays. Rutgers has a legit of shot of hosting this one.
Other Candidates: Ohio State at Penn State is a prime time telecast for ABC/ESPN. However, it's unlikely that this game will match two teams as highly rated as the WVU/Rutgers affair. Nebraska at Texas is another one to keep an eye on.
Stay classy Buckeyes
Week 10 (Nov. 3rd)
Prediction: Wisconsin at Ohio State
Why: Really, it's wide open. If Bama is ranked in the Top 25 (a long shot) and LSU is having the season most experts predict, they could end up in Tuscaloosa. Simply because of the great storyline.
Other Candidates: LSU at Bama or Texas A&M at Oklahoma.
Typical Cal fan
Week 11 (Nov. 10th)
Predictions: USC at Cal
Why: This is essentially the Pac-10 Championship Game. You think they're going to miss a big Southern Cal game?
Other Candidates: There aren't many other realistic candidates. Georgia and Auburn would both have to have miracle seasons for GameDay to even consider it. And if we were that good, CBS would televise the game. No way we get to host. FSU at Virginia Tech is another candidate.
Week 12 (Nov. 17)
Prediction: Ohio State at Michigan
Why: Seriously. Do I really need to fill this area out? It's ESPN after all.
Other Candidates: There really isn't one. Miami at VT looks decent. The SEC has a crap schedule this week with UK at Georgia being the possible flagship game.
Week 13 (Nov. 24)
Prediction: No earthly idea
Why: Realistically, it's the most wide open week of the year. There are lots of good games that sound great like FSU at Florida, Oregon at UCLA, OkSU vs. OU, UGA at GT, SC at Clemson, etc. The highest ranked team playing anyone of note will have Corso in attendance. Hell, they could cover the UGA/GT game for all I know.
If I do as horribly on this as I think I'm going to do, I'll not do this is in the future. lol.
