Hartman Fund Time: Call Your Banker

It's that time again. Time to decide what you want more: Georgia football tickets, a full gas tank for your SUV, early retirement, or to pay for your kid's college education. That's right, it's time to make your donation to the Hartman Fund! Forms have been mailed out already. If you want the opportunity to buy Georgia season football tickets, pay up. The athletic department has sent out its annual list of demands.

Here's the chart for away game tickets:
and extra home game tickets:
For those of you who had trouble with charts when you were in elementary school, allow me to give you a real world example. If I am a renewable season ticket holder and I wanted two tickets to the LSU game next year, I need to give at least $500 before the Hartman Fund deadline. (This should not be a problem because I am likely to have made a donation of at least that much to get my season tickets.) But, I only get the right to buy those tickets if I've already given at least $22,000 since 1965. Then, assuming I qualify, I will fight it out with the rest of the qualifiers to see who get seats. The more I've given, the more likely I am to get tickets.

The deadline for donations to the Hartman Fund is February 15, 2008. You have about two and a half months to come up with the cash.

Bowls: Who to cheer for on Saturday (if we want various BCS Bowls)

This is what happens to people who read this post

Well...it all depends on what outcome you want. For starters, here's the complete BCS Standings as a refresher. Also - remember the Big East has no "host" BCS bowl. Don't read it standing up with your knees locked or you'll end up like the dude in the picture.

Let's start with the national title game scenario:
    1. Oklahoma must beat Missouri
    2. Pitt must beat WVU (and monkeys will fly out of my rectum)
    3. LSU losing to UT would help us avoid being jumped
    4. Virginia Tech losing to Boston College would also be nice
    5. Southern Cal losing to UCLA would be nice
    6. Kansas' Mark Mangino confessing to cannibalism or saying something really racist would also be nice. Something that would turn some voters against him.

Just six small steps away from a stone cold lock national title game appearance. Book travel now! (Or obviously not.)
The Rose Bowl Scenario
    1. Oklahoma must beat Missouri or Pitt beats WVU
    2. The Rose Bowl must select UGA over Illinois to replace OSU

Nice to haves in this scenario:
    1. Tennessee beats LSU
    2. Arizona State beats Arizona
    3. Hawaii beats Washington
    4. Boston College beats Virginia Tech
    5. Oregon beats Oregon State

The five "nice to haves" might ensure that Illinois doesn't move up one more spot and become BCS eligible. If they're ineligible, then the Rose can't select them.
The Orange Bowl Scenario
    1. OU beats Missouri *or* WVU beats Pitt
    2. The Rose picks Illinois over UGA to replace OSU
    3. The Orange picks UGA over Kansas.

    Scenario B (easier way):
    1. Missouri wins *and* WVU wins
    2. Fiesta picks Kansas to replace Missouri.
    3. Orange picks UGA with first true at-large

There's no rocket science in this one. The Orange Bowl would simply have to pick us over Kansas. The only reason it would be nice for Mizzou or West Virginia to lose is it would further lock up our automatic qualifier status. There's no "nice to haves" in this one. The Orange Bowl, SEC, ACC, UGA and VT are all comfortable with a rematch between the Dawgs and Hokies. Why wouldn't they be? If both Missouri and WVU win, the scenario is the even simpler. We also need KU to stay at #5 so the Orange doesn't get tempted with the idea of picking the Gators.
The Fiesta Scenario #1
Preface: It's unlikely that the Fiesta would select UGA over Kansas with their first pick if given the choice. To get to the Fiesta would require...
    1. OU beats Missouri
    2. The Rose selects Illinois over UGA to replace OSU
    3. The Orange Bowl selects Kansas over UGA
    4. The Fiesta has to select UGA (or Hawaii and no one wants them)

The problem with this scenario. There's nothing to really pull for. It happens if it happens. If Missouri beats OU, the Fiesta will definitely take Kansas #1 and the Orange will pretty much have to take us. So I guess if you want a shot at the Fiesta (and why would you given that we'll be in Arizona on Sept. 20th anyway), pull for OU.
Fiesta Bowl Scenario #2
This one is simple, but it's not going to happen.
    1. Pitt beats WVU
    2. Missouri beats Oklahoma
    3. The Rose selects Illinois over UGA to replace OSU
    4. The Fiesta selects Kansas to replace Missouri
    5. The Orange picks WVU over UGA
    6. The Fiesta has to pick UGA as an automatic qualifier (or Hawaii)

Again...nothing to really pull for because we're hoping we get picked over for bowls. That's no way to live.
The Sugar Bowl Scenario:
Preface: This one is a major reach.
    1. OU beats Missouri (notice a theme yet?)
    2. Pitt beats WVU
    3. VT loses to Boston College
    4. LSU beats Tennessee by a TON
    5. Washington beats Hawaii
    6. Polls vote LSU over UGA, KU, Missouri and WVU
    7. By rule, the Rose would not be allowed to select UGA if LSU is in the national title game. So the Sugar selects UGA

The only reason we'd want Hawaii to lose...so we don't have to play the douche bags. In this scenario, we'd likely play the ACC's second best team.
So basically...pick what you want to happen. But the common theme is:
    1. Boomer Sooner
    2. Go Pitt
    3. Very little good comes from an LSU win vs. UT
    4. Your ass will be GLUED to the BCS Selection show because all of this is coming down to the opinions of a bunch of guys in funny suits from the Chamber of Commerce for cities that haven't seen UGA Fans up close and personal either (A) ever or (B) in a generation or two
Ok...so what did I screw up?

PWD

***Note: if you're wondering why Kansas can't go to the Rose.....well....if Missouri is in the title game, the Rose isn't allowed to select Kansas. If Missouri isn't in the title game, I guess the Rose could pick Kansas. I just don't think they would. I didn't think that through until I finished all the stuff above, and I'm not re-writing it.

Tuberville to Arkansas? (per Arkansas TV)

Arkansas TV is reporting that Tommy Tuberville has accepted the head coaching job at Arkansas; however, no deal has been signed. The TV broadcast is available on FanBlogs.com.

Jay Jacobs says he has not been contacted. Does Jacobs mean that he wasn't asked for permission to speak with Tuberville? If so, that's pretty bush league. The whole thing sounds sketch, but we should know quickly now that the cat is out of the proverbial bag.

That zipping noise you're hearing could be the sound of the Walton boys showing Mr. Lowder whose is bigger.

Update: Just to expand on this. It's not that I think this will happen as much as I want it to happen.

3 million page views and counting

3 million page views

We broke two milestones this month. First, the Georgia Sports Blog served up more than 250,000 275,000 page views in November. That shatters our old monthly record of ~180,000 page views. In fact, we had almost as many visits in November as our previous high water mark for page views.

Secondly, the site powered through the 3 million page view barrier on the all-time ticker. Actually, I think we broke that barrier last month if you count the original blog URL, and we're closer to 3.5 million. Regardless, it's still not enough traffic that I could mention the site on a first date to impress the ladies. But it's something.

Special thanks to Dawgnoxious and Quinton for helping me with the content as well as Dave A. for helping me with the HTML. And of course, thanks to all the regulars in the comments section like Doug, Jason (both of you), T. Daily Bowl Speculation for UGA

Video ht- EDSBS.

The Dallas Morning News says that the Fiesta Bowl badly wants Kansas. They want Kansas badly enough to be considering an Oklahoma vs. Kansas game should the Sooners beat Missouri. It's rather shocking to think that Kansas would be more appealing to them than the Arizona State Sun Devils. Normally, ticket sales outweigh any concerns related to hotels or TV match-ups. Plus, I'm not even sure that there's a scenario where KU vs. OU is possible. But anyway...Apparently, all the BCS bowls are convinced that the entire State of Kansas will empty to attend whatever bowl they are assigned.

Update: The Orange Bowl told Josh Kendall that they have no worries whatsoever about a rematch involving UGA and VT. and that both schools and our respective conferences aren't worried either.

The Huntsville Times has a nice column complimenting UGA on its season and pending BCS adventure. The article also has this nugget of randomness from Damon Evans:
One day in practice leading up to the Auburn game, the players noticed somebody hiding in a tree, filming the workout. Suddenly, a police car pulled up. A cop rushed the tree, hauled the cameraman down, clamped him in handcuffs and drove him away.

The players lustily cheered the arrest of the spy. "To this day,'' Evans said, "the players still don't know that Coach Richt hired the guy and set that up.
Uhhhh....ok.

My BCS Bowl Predictions (as of today):
National Title: Missouri vs. West Virginia
    Rose: USC vs. Ohio State
Orange: VT vs. UGA (Unavoidable in this scenario. KU would already be picked)
    Fiesta: Kansas vs. Arizona State
    Sugar: LSU vs. Hawaii
*Remember the Big East doesn't have a tie to the Orange or any other BCS bowl. It's the only conference that floats from BCS bowl to bowl.

The San Jose Mercury News has the same predictions.

Coaching Rumors: GT, Auburn, Michigan, etc.

Quick look around before heading to bed:
  • Tuberville is making the Auburn faithful a little restless with his rumored flirting with Arkansas. Tubs is originally from the State of Arkansas. The new Hawg athletic director has outlined his plan for their search. If he bolted, Auburn would look to Petrino, but he currently makes $4.8 million per year to coach the Falcons. Would he really take a $1.8 million (or more) pay cut to lead the Tigers?

  • New Orleans papers and the Associated Press are reporting that Michigan has received permission to speak with Les Miles. Not all Wolverine bloggers are excited about having Miles in Ann Arbor. What's not to like? Who wouldn't want a whack job who wastes top talent running their program? FanBlogs asks if Jeff Tedford should be a bigger part of the search.

  • Georgia Tech's big rumored name? Rick Neuheisel. I mean seriously. If you're going to get mad when we say Tech Lies and Cheats, don't go out and hire a two or three time NCAA offender. That's just like shooting fish in a barrel. He's also a candidate at SMU, UCLA and Arkansas. I'd like to see them end up with David Cutcliff or Randy Edsall. Barring Archie Manning having any more kids, I think Cutcliff's recruiting would be their final undoing. Interestingly both GSU and Navy say that Tech hasn't asked for permission to talk with Paul Johnson or Chris Hatcher.

  • Nebraska has asked for permission to interview Cincinnati's Brian Kelly. He's also one of the candidates for the Michigan job if The Hat turns them down.

  • Duke - I personally think they end up with Steve Spurrier, Jr, but I'm too lazy to go looking for a link for that. I just think that's who I'd hire if it was me.

Today's Bowl Rumors and Headlines

Image: Hipple

The Athens paper says Damon is working the phones to get us the best bowl possible. However, Richt won't brag on the Dawgs or lobby for a better bowl because he's too busy doing his Munson/Dooley poor mouthing impression.

Richt might not be talking about the Dawgs, but Les Miles is. The Mad Hatter is irked over Georgia's possible national title run. Miles isn't the only one with a beef. Fox's resident moron analyst Charles Davis described UGA getting into the National Title game as "The Nightmare Scenario." I see nothing nightmarish about UGA playing for the title given the insanity of this season. The only nightmare in my eyes would be a Hawaii in the slot opposite Ohio State.

Terry Bowden must be lobbying for the Georgia Tech head coaching job. He spends a little time in his BCS article mentioning that he doesn't want to see UGA in the title game.

Andy Stables of the Tampa Tribune notes that Florida isn't technically out of the BCS mix. Technically, he's right. But UGA getting knocked of its guaranteed at-large spot so the Gators can sneak into the Orange Bowl is a massive leap. LSU is currently 7th. They aren't going to jump three spots in one week while passing two teams that didn't play. Get serious. Even if Virginia Tech loses, I just don't see them jumping Georgia *and* Kansas to push us out of the Top 4.

DawgPost.com has their bowl update and so does UGASports.com. Josh Kendall of the Macon Telegraph closes out the morning bowl discussion.

[Dawgnoxious note: if you filled out your bowl ticket request online but did not include any or all of the BCS bowls considering the Dawgs, you can call the UGA ticket office through Friday to change your ticket request. However, if you attempt to add those bowl ticket requests online you will not be able to do so. I called Monday and the whole process took about 2 minutes.]

UGA Bowl News and Rumors: The Rose Bowl?

There are two articles that are must reads for Georgia fans wondering where our bowl destination lies. The first is an interview with the CEO of the Rose Bowl on the AJC's site. The key quote is this:
"We are very cognizant of the long-time partnership between the Big Ten and the Pac-10, and we try to give special preferences to those," said Mitch Dorger, CEO of the Rose Bowl. "But we are not obligated to disadvantage the game in order to keep that [partnership] alive."
As a refresher, the Rose Bowl will have the #1 pick of available at-large teams if Oklahoma beats Missouri. In that scenario, the Rose will essentially have to pick between UGA with its high ranking, sexxxy winning streak, great record, warm and fuzzy coach, and big traveling fan base OR Illinois with its low ranking, three loses, knuckle dragging coach, thieving basketball fans who smoke in non-smoking rooms, eat crackers in bed and pee on the toilet seat. I think the choice is obvious.

Groo at DawgsOnline points out that Jim Delany, Big 10 Commissioner and resident pain in the ass for the SEC, worked with the Rose to create a contract that gives them all sorts of most favored nation status exemptions. In other words, the Rose will have plenty of excuses at their disposal if they want to screw us and pick the Fighting Zookers. He theorizes that the Rose At-Large selection will simply come down to a power struggle between SEC Commissioner Mike Slive and Delany.

Dec. 2nd's Bowl Selection Show will be must see TV if Oklahoma beats Missouri. Well...it'll be pretty intriguing regardless.

SEC Power Poll Ballot

  1. LSU - I know they lost, but they should still win the conference. LSU is good, they just aren't the overwhelming team they were at the start of the year. They've beaten the better teams they've played, but gotten upset in triple overtime by two teams they should have steamrolled. Tiger fans are ready to slit their wrists despite heading to Atlanta.
  2. Georgia - Played well against a good defense, but then again the Dawgs own Georgia Tech. Tough night for Knowshon? No problem. Thomas Brown lit up the Jackets. Please, please, please give us Georgia and USC in the Rose Bowl.
  3. Florida - Memo to Geno: Tebow can take FSU down with a broken hand. The Gator offense could be one of the best in history next year.
  4. Tennessee - The Big Orange just will not die. It seems that they have nine lives after all, consistently avoiding sure defeat through special teams mishaps and timely defensive plays. Will their luck run out against LSU or will the Tigers be too emotionally down to fight?
  5. Auburn - Seven in a row earns Tuberville rumors of a lifetime contract. The game wasn't a thing of beauty, but the Aubs made the plays when they had too.
  6. Arkansas - I know Tebow is great, but McFadden is just incredible. He has no Percy Harvin or even a real threatening passing game to take pressure off of him, but he can just take a game over. LSU had no answer for him. Too bad for the Hawgs, neither McFadden or Nutt will be back for an encore next year.
  7. Mississippi State - Huge comeback to win the Egg Bowl results in Oge going down and Croom chocking up on TV. Who outside of Oxford is cheering against Croom? No body. State is a great story this year. From 45-0 to a bowl appearance.
  8. Kentucky - UK played its guts out in the second half to get back in the game and had the Vols twice, once in regulation (fumbled snap) and in overtime (blocked kick), but the orange mojo wouldn't let them win. Andre Woodson deserved better than fumbling the ball on the last play of his regular season.
  9. South Carolina - Has Shiny Pants ever been through anything like this? A historic collapse leaves the Cocks teetering on the verge of staying home for bowl season.
  10. Alabama - Saban will make Bama a power again, but it looks like the job may be bigger than Saban anticipated. First order of business: hire a competent quarterbacks coach. John Parker WIlson looks brilliant in one instant and lost for longer periods.
  11. Vanderbilt - Wake ran them over, ending their aspirations of bowl eligibility. Same old Vandy.
  12. Ole Miss - Goodbye, Coach O. We will miss you.

Latest Coaching Rumors

What we're hearing / Reading...

Georgia Tech / Chan Gailey:Houston Nutt / Arkansas / Ole Miss Triangle:Other quick recaps from FootballRumors and FanBlogs:
-- Ferenz is getting closer with Michigan
-- Pelini is interviewing with Nebraska
-- Doba is out at WSU. If I'm them I go after Boise State's Peterson. Although, the common wisdom is Mike Price comes "home." Western Washington's strippers beware.
-- Southern Miss fired Jeff Bower. Bower had the fourth largest tenure of any Div I-A coach behind Joe Pa, Bowden and Beamer. He's turned down multiple jobs to grow their program. Yet, he's out after going 7-5.

Latest Chan Gailey Rumors (GT Coaching Search)

It looks like things are finally coming to a head on North Avenue. According to the AJC, Chan Gailey will meet with Tech's athletic director Dan Radakovich Monday morning. I'm expecting an announcement by 10:00 am regarding the demise of the Chan Wagon.

Jeff Schultz piles on at the last minute saying it's time to move forward with a new coach. Furman Bisher, a tech man(sic) til the day he dies, sends out the call for alms in his column. The Sporting News is a little more balanced. They simply ask is Tech is better off now than before Gailey was hired.

Per ESPN's Mark Schlabach tonight on CSS Talking Football the candidates for the GT job are:
-- Skip Holtz - current East Carolina coach.
-- Will Muschamp - former UGA player. Current AU defensive coordinator
-- Terry Bowden - former AU head coach
-- Glen Mason - former Minnesota coach. UGA coach for 48 hours in mid-90s
-- Randy Edsall - current UConn head coach. Former GT defensive coordinator

Other names I've heard:
Paul Johnson - Current Navy coach. Former GSU coach
Bobby Johnson - Current Vandy Coach
Chris Hatcher - Current GSU coach. Former Valdosta coach

I have to laugh at most of those names. First off, I can't see GT going back to hire an East Carolina head coach after the Bill Lewis debacle. Plus, I can't see them hiring a former UGA player like Muschamp....much less one 32 or so years old.

Terry Bowden would be a great fit, but I wonder if they are too proud to take a guy that got fired at Auburn? The Glen Mason idea about knocked me off my chair. One thing is for sure, Tech would be able to run the ball with the Masonator. Although, he showcased a passion for Gailey Equilibrium (7 wins / year) before Gailey was even hired at GT . He averaged 6.4 wins/year at Minnesota while having the Music City Bowl renamed the Glen Mason invitational.

Edsall would make a sense culturally and experience wise. As the Georgia Tech defensive coordinator in 1998, they had a solid season. However, Edsall is a Syracuse alum, and the 'Cuse job should open within the next 24 hours.

Five years from now, Hatcher would be interesting. right now, he's another early 30s guy that may not have the seasoning.

The next few weeks will be interesting on this one.

Dawgs 4th in BCS, AP and Coaches Polls!

Breaking: Fox just showed the BCS Standings on TV. Link is now up. Georgia is 4th.
    1. Missouri
    2. West Virginia
    3. Ohio State
    4. Georgia
    5. Kansas
ESPN has the latest polls out.

In the USAToday Coaches Poll:
    1. West Virginia
    2. Missouri
    3. Ohio State
    4. Georgia
    5. (tie) Kansas
    5. (tie) Virginia Tech
    7. LSU
    8. Oklahoma
    9. Southern Cal
    10. Hawaii (up from 13th. Probably enough to get them a BCS slot)
    11. Florida
    12. Boston College
    13. Arizona State
    14. Illinois
    15. Tennessee
AP Poll has no bearing on the BCS, but...
    1. Missouri
    2. West Virginia
    3. Ohio State
    4. Georgia
    5. LSU
    6. Virginia Tech
    7. Kansas
When the BCS Poll gets announced around 7:30 pm EST or so, I'll post that. We are guaranteed a BCS At-Large spot if we're in the Top 4 of the final BCS Poll *and* there is no At-Large team at #3. Right now, it seems unlikely that an at-large team will jump us for #3, but we'll have to see what the computers and Harris polls do with Kansas tonight.

I don't think we'd get screwed out of a BCS slot regardless, but if we're at #4 on December 2nd and KU is at #3, the Orange would be allowed to take Florida. I doubt they would, but it would be within their rights. That's why tonight's BCS poll is so important. (NOTE: TV just showed Dawgs at 4th in BCS Poll).

Dog Bites "Next Hand"

For those of you who didn't watch the Iron Bowl last night, Auburn won it 17-10. This gives the Aubs six wins in a row, meaning they will now taunt the Bammers with two hands to show them how many consecutive wins they have in the rivalry. (Evidently, Alabama residents can only communicate in primitive hand gestures.) Last year, Tuberville warned Alabama to "fear the thumb," and this year the Aubs have moved on to the "next hand."

An Alabama state police K-9 unit tried to insure that Auburn DB Jerraud Powers wouldn't taunt anyone when it bit Powers Saturday night in the waning minutes.

Such an impromptu amputation might actually make the taunt more effective. The Aubs could flash a middle finger paired with another five digits.

UGA vs. GT post-game thoughts....

Broken hearted nerds (image: DawgPost.com)

Yes. We got some breaks. Lots and lots of breaks. But, it's like the old saying goes, "There's no such thing as luck. Luck is what happens when preparation meets opportunity."

GT dropped several chances at INTs, and they dropped a wide open bomb to start the game. They essentially came out, saw our team's red helmets and promptly wet themselves. It's a sight that Georgia fans should be familiar with...it's the same thing we did in Jacksonville many a time. The weight of a huge streak facilitates choking, alligator arms, fumbled snaps and blown coverages.

Tech wasn't the only team with missed opportunities. Georgia dropped several INTs and committed some bone headed penalties as well. The difference in the game was Georgia's ability to make game breaking plays on offense and hold Tech in check defensively.

This week, you'll have to listen to Tech fans bitch about officiating. What else is new? Has Tech ever lost a game without bad officiating? Not if you listen to the rhetoric coming from The Flats. The only truly bad call that I saw was the pass interference penalty near the end of the half, but so what? We won by two touchdowns not one. That call didn't change the outcome of the game. All the calls related to the touchbacks were good calls. We simply got the bounces there.

Tech lost because they couldn't handle the moment.
Tech lost because Gailey hasn't recruited or developed a QB in six seasons.
Tech lost because Tenuta is grossly overrated and takes too many chances.
Tech lost because their WRs have hands of stone.
Tech lost because UGA has more talent, depth and better coaching across the board.

They did not lose because of officiating or luck.

Georgia's Bowl Scenarios....

UGA's Bowl Scenarios going into the Tech game:
Sugar Bowl - Win the SEC Championship Game.

Orange Bowl - Beat GT. Don't play for the SEC. WVU plays KU/Mizzou winner. Orange gets the first at-large pick after the Fiesta replaces Big 12 Champ. Orange picks us. The Fiesta would be wildly unlikely to pick us over the Big 12's second best team.

Rose Bowl - Beat GT. Don't play for the SEC. WVU plays Ohio State winner after Oklahoma beats the KU/Mizzou winner. Rose selects UGA over Big 12 runner-up or Illinois (traditional Big 10 tie).

Capital One Bowl - Beat GT. Lose SEC Title game. If FSU beats UF, it would probably increase the odds of going here over the home state team.

Outback Bowl - Lose to GT. Don't play for SEC Championship.

Basically, we need to kick the ever living hell out of Georgia Tech. Earlier, I said there was no national title scenario (before I edited this post completely after dinner). It should read...the national title scenario is absurdly long and involves UConn beating WVU.

God Bless America. That is all.

Future Roster Tidbits...

Sean Bailey: Image: Hipple

JimFromDuluth has Monday's Bulldog Hotline recap online over at the Anti-Orange page. There are two interesting tidbits in the recap.

First, Richt reports that Chris Little (OL) has dropped his weight from a terrifyingly large 380 lbs. to 330. It's a little scary to me that he might have dropped half a hundred in that short a time frame; however, it is good to see him getting into shape. Coming into his senior year of high school he looked like a dominating prospect, but injuries and grazing kept him out of the playing time discussion this year. It's hard to put on muscle while you're dropping that much fat, but he'll have time to rebuild his body this off season.

Secondly, Richt mentioned that we're losing seven scholarship wide receivers in the next two graduating classes. That's why recruiting stud WRs has been such a priority this year. The departing WRs are:
    2007 Class:
    S. Bailey: Our best WR since Reggie Brown graduated in '04
TJ Gartrell: Less than 10 career catches. Plagued by injuries
    M. Henderson: Strong senior season. Frequently injured.
AJ Bryant: ~25 career catches. Plagued by injures.

    2008 Class:
    M. Massaquoi: Strong player.
    K. Harris: Limited PT this year.
    D. Goodman: Late bloomer. Has potential.
I appreciate the contributions of all of those kids, but realistically there are only two guys in that group that have avoided the injury bug long enough to really make a consistent impact. The departure of these seven may leave a leadership void, but it does free up scholarships and give us the opportunity to bring our roster more into balance. Entering this season we had 11 or 12 returning scholarship wideouts but only five scholarship OL (not including Tater Salad Smith). That imbalance should be resolved now.

Welcome to Moe's (Image: Hipple)

Also, imagine being an NFL General Manager for a minute. Imagine being told, you're going to lose two starters, but you get to replace them with seven draft picks. That's a dream come true.

Again - I appreciate the contributions and hard work of those kids, but the future looks very interesting with guys like AJ Green, Tavarres King, Israel Troupe, and Walter Hill behind them. I also have to imagine that WR recruiting will be critical in the 2009 class as well.

What it's like losing to Tech

Those of you (particularly students) who haven't experienced losing to Tech...you really have no idea how frustrating it is. It's like playing cards against Corky and losing. It's a confusing and discombobulating feeling. To give you a sense for what it's like...

It's crap like THIS that makes it a rivalry despite the lopsided nature of the series. THIS is why you show up at Bobby Dodd Stadium at Historic Mark Richt Field in red and bark like hell. THIS is why you bust their balls.

Because they'll bust yours if given the chance. Get loud on Saturday.
Alternate Lyrics to the Rambling Wreck's closing verse:
If you had a son sir,
I'd tell you what he'd do
You'd watch him LOSE TO GEORGIA
Like his daddy used to do.

Pre-Tech News and Notes

First of all, here's Pulpwood's latest prediction: It involves whipped backsides and a pink shirt. Pulpwood calls from jail where the rules on cussin' are different than at your office, so check your employee handbook regarding use of company computers to access foul mouthed monkey speak about your favorite football team.

Perennial spring superstar and one time second string tailback Jason Johnson was forced to give up football due to a spinal condition. Johnson saw action in several games this year, rushing for 22 yards on 9 attempts. Jason has been a good Dawg for the past four years and we wish him well.

If you are still following the beauty contest and perpetual P.R. campaign known as the Heisman race, Georgia's players have some bold statements for you. They don't like Tebow, as Kelin Johnson said, "He doesn't have my vote." (Kelin, by the way, doesn't actually have a vote.) Tebow's lackluster play in Jacksonville has blinded us to the fact that he is the first player in NCAA history to run for twenty touchdowns and throw for twenty more. Stafford picks Oregon's Dennis Dixson, even though he is out for the year with an ACL tear. Kelin's actual pick was Darren McFadden, although Rennie Curran said "we would destroy him, too." Easy there, Rennie. I still have memories of McFadden's last trip to Athens rattling around in my head causing significant trauma.

The background comments on that video aren't needed because that is what every knowledgeable football fan should be saying.

I know this is the Georgia SPORTS Blog, but special mention needs to go out to Deep Shah and Katherine Vyborny. These two UGA students were awarded Rhodes scholarships this week. That's two more Rhodes scholars than Vanderbilt, Florida, and Georgia Tech. Please remember this when confronting Tech fans this weekend.

Why the Gators Suck

We take a break from Hating Tech for a few minutes to bring you this moment of bliss (ht - Scalp 'eM). This is why the Gators suck.

Speaking of sucky Gators. Georgia Sports Blog reader Malcolm Newton asks this regarding Tim Tebow's Heisman campaign
Has the Heisman ever been awarded to a player who cries after he loses a game or three? How about a player who spends most of the World's Largest Outdoor Cocktail Party on his butt? Oh yeah, Spurrier won it way back when under the same circumstances.

Cordy Glenn recruiting video

As you already know, Riverdale High School offensive tackle Cordy Glenn committed to Georgia on Sunday. OT was one of the few remaining holes in this otherwise exceptional recruiting class, and Glenn is the type of prospect to fill it.

Scout.com has free video up showcasing the big man's abilities. When watching the video it's important to ignore the size difference between Glenn and the HS defensive linemen that he's facing. What he does to those little guys isn't what's impressive. It's HOW he does it, and how LONG he does it.

The impressive part is watching his passion for destruction. Here's a guy blocking his man into the turf 10, 15 or 20 yards down the field well after the running back has passed him. He blocks with vengeance and bad intentions. Watch him pick up his feet and keep his hands on defenders in pass protection. A guy that size shouldn't be able to move like that. That's why he's a blue chipper.

Left Tackle Cordy Glenn

Georgia beat Alabama and a host of others to sign this soon to be five star prospect. As I've said before, we don't do a ton of recruiting coverage here. However, a well placed source involved in Glenn's recruitment told me (paraphrase), "He's exactly what Georgia is looking for. He's got the size, speed, work ethic and grades to become a star. Searels is going to love working with Glenn."

With Haverkamp's departure, there appears to be room for at least two more prospects in this recruiting class. All indications point to Zebrie Sanders of Ohio (6'-6" 280 lb four star offensive tackle) as being one of the priorities for the last spot alongside Jefferson County's AJ Harmon (current Clemson commit).

Worthless heap of rolling school spirit

One of my favorite off season stories was the GT students crashing the uninsured Rambling Wreck. The best parts of the story were
    A. No one was hurt
    B. The instant Cover Up effort. No pictures.
The last time the Techies worked so hard to make an embarrassing situation go away, the problem involved Joe Hamilton's transcript. To catch up on the story of the car crash, the bounty for the pictures and the CSTV story about the controversy, check our Rambling Wreck archive.

With any luck, the students will drive that heap of poo out onto the middle of the field Saturday, and the entire car will sort of disintegrate like Jake and Elwood's car at the Cook County Tax office.

Gailey's Future

What word best describes Chan Gailey? For me, it's mediocre.

He has a 58.9 career winning percentage at GT, and he will likely close out this year having lost at least 5 games a year for 6 years. His career winning percentage is 61 percent regardless of location. He's the meaty part of the bell curve of average.

While he has managed to go 6-1 vs. Miami, Auburn and Notre Dame, he has managed to lose games against horrible UNC, Duke, Wake and Fresno State teams while blowing two layup opportunities to beat his biggest rival (UGA '04 and UGA '06). All the while continuing his career long tradition of not developing an all-star QB (other than 1 year with Kordell Stewart).

The problem for GT...Gailey is hovering around the 55 or so percentile of coaches. That means there's almost a 50-50 shot that they could actually do WORSE with their next hire.

Especially if they go looking in a year where UCLA, Nebraska, TAMU, Michigan, LSU, Auburn, Ole Miss, Arkansas, Pitt, Syracuse, Washington State, etc all may be looking for coaches...not to mention the fact that GT is an inherently hard place to win because of their culture, budget, facilities and curriculum.

So, basically...Gailey needs to beat Georgia. Badly. We're getting their A+ game on Saturday. It's a hungry crew desperate for a win. Vegas knows it. That's why the spread is around 3 points. We didn't fair well when we ran into this type of situation in Knoxville, but our team is nothing like the UGA Crew that was obliterated on Rocky Top.

He's mediocre, but ask Tommy Tuberville if the sting of losing to these guys isn't real. Our boys should win by two plus TDs. But will we?

Regarding Mike Mercer's Departure

I support Felton's decision to remove Mercer from the team. Based on the events leading up to his dismissal, I never expected him to play another game for us anyway. So the alternative is have a malcontent stick around the program and bring others down. See Exhibit A: Billy's arrest.

That said, I personally look at this season as a "No Excuses" type of affair. I really don't care how many players get suspended or for what reason. I know why we got where we are, and I know how it happened. I respect the hand Felton was dealt originally.

But these are Felton's recruits. Sixty percent of last year's starters have been suspended and/or dismissed from the team already this year, and we aren't even in December.

Felton isn't going to be pumped about this article. In fact, he says this about negative comments from fans like me...
"I take great offense to anyone who would throw in the towel on our season based on a few players being suspended or dismissed," Felton said. "We have a terrific group of talented players here, as a matter of fact, as talented and as deep as we've had. So I take offense to anybody who would suggest that our season is down or cannot be successful because of this..

"I really like the people that we have in our program and I like the people that are coming into our program," Felton said. "Just like everything else with our program, it's just getting better and better all the time."
Ok...well, if this is your super duper talented team, then make the NCAA tourney with it. Impress us all, and get a huge pay raise. I don't think anyone is pulling against them.

At some point though we do have to make meaningful progress as a program. That progress involves making the NCAA Tourney. Progress isn't measured in NIT banners. This is Year 5. If Felton makes the tourney with this group, then he deserves a large contract extension and pay raise.

If not...it'll be hard decision time. In the meantime, be good or behave. Right not, we're doing neither.

Regardless, I'll be attending 6-8 games just like I have every year for the past 17. It's like banging your head inside a car door at times, but what the hell. It's the Dawgs, and I get to bark. So there's that.

So...maybe we didn't wear Black Jerseys before Auburn

Travis Fain with the Macon Telegraph talked with Charley Trippi about the photos of him in black jerseys and the rumors that the team had worn black jerseys during the 1943 Rose Bowl. Charley says he never wore a black jersey during a game. Interesting.

Either way...there's a precedent now.

Apologies to Bryant Hahnfeldt (Or, How I Cost Us a Trip to Atlanta)

(AP Photo/Wade Payne)

It's all my fault. I cost us the SEC East crown last week. At 14-9, I thought it was too early. At 17-9, I started listening to the UT radio broadcast. At 24-9 with 9:00 left in the third, I pulled the trigger. I started writing a post about how we had clinched the SEC East and were heading to Atlanta to face LSU. It was a great story about how much we had overcome this season, the inexperience, the inconsistent play, the beat down in Knoxville. From the depths of despair to the SEC Championship game, it was a story of inspiration and triumph. But Phil and the boys in orange just wouldn't let me post it. UT's 16 point fourth quarter comeback put the Dawg champagne on ice, at least for another week. It was bad form. Mistakes were made. Etc.

The real victim is Bryant Hahnfeldt, Vandy's kicker, who had no idea my football karma was swirling around him, guaranteeing he would miss that kick. I vow to you, loyal reader, and kickers everywhere never to begin a post until the score goes final.

SEC Power Poll Ballot

  1. LSU - At a cupcake, oops, I mean beat Ole Miss. Can the Tigers get focused for DMac and the Hawgs? They've sleepwalked through the last three games and looked sloppy, but it hasn't mattered. I think the Tigers will be focused and sharp for any championship games, but Saturday could be interesting if the Tigers remain sluggish.
  2. Georgia - Regressed a bit as they tried to give UK some scores via four turnovers, but their D had its day. Georgia Tech will be motivated for the Dawgs who better get refreshed after a tiring stretch of inspired play.
  3. Florida - Sometimes I watch UF and think that it is impossible for anyone to beat them.
  4. Tennessee - I'm sure Neyland was an orange ball of tension during the entire second half. Vandy's tough, but it shouldn't have come to that. The Dawgs should be hopeful for the weekend as a UK win sends them to the Dome. Woodson should enjoy a day against the UT secondary.
  5. Auburn - Watch out, Aubs. I know you're rested. I know you're the better team. I know about the streak. I know about Bama's humiliation. But the way this year is going, would it surprise anyone if Bama won?
  6. Arkansas - The Hawgs, a plodding team, beat another plodding team by throwing it around. Miracle stat of the day: Casey Dick threw 4 touchdown passes! Hell = Frozen.
  7. Mississippi State - MSU, having achieved its goal of bowl eligibility, has seemingly stopped playing defense and will simply await its bowl assignment as Casey Dick torches its secondary.
  8. Kentucky - The LSU win apparently zapped all of UK's reservoir of good play. Woodson looks great on one play only to look miserable on the next by holding the ball too long and getting sacked. Georgia's defense played well, but the 'Cats are struggling at the wrong time.
  9. South Carolina - Spurrier has two weeks to prep for Clemson. Two weeks to prep for ending Tommy Bowden's career.
  10. Vanderbilt - Same ole Vandy: 1) Get a lead. 2) Hang around. 3) Collapse. 4) Repeat.
  11. Ole Miss - Give the Oge some credit. Brent Schaeffer put some scare into the Ole Miss offense and the Rebs had lots of opportunities to grab the game, but just couldn't stop turning it over. Well done, Oge.
  12. Alabama - The wailing! The gnashing of the teeth!

SEC / ACC Bowl Predictions

Sadly...Evil Richt was back on his meds Saturday (image: Hipple)

The AJC has their predictions up as does Sportsline.com. My Readers Digest version of the predictions for Georgia are these:

- Beat GT / UT beats UK / LSU beats UT: Sugar Bowl
- Beat GT / UT beats UK / UT beats LSU: Orange or Fiesta*
- Beat GT / UK beats UT/ UGA beats LSU: Sugar Bowl
- Beat GT / UK beats UT / LSU beats UGA / UF beats FSU: Outback
- Beat GT / UK beats UT / LSU beats UGA / FSU beats UF: Citrus
- Lose to GT: Outback, Peach, Cotton, who the hell knows.

* If LSU loses to UT, a 10-2 UGA would only be guaranteed an at-large BCS slot if we're ranked #4 or higher in the final BCS poll. With LSU coming off an SECC loss and possibly dealing with a coaching search, UGA would probably be a favorite for the Orange or Fiesta over LSU. But it won't be a lock unless we're Top 4.

Bowl Predictions:
National Title: LSU vs. WVU
Rose: Ohio State vs. Oregon
Fiesta: Oklahoma vs. USC
Orange: Boston College vs. Kansas
Sugar: Georgia vs. Virginia Tech* (assumes Hawaii loses one)

Capital One: Florida vs. Illinois
Outback: Tennessee vs. Wisconsin
Cotton: Auburn vs. Missouri

Chick-Fil-A: UK vs. Virginia
Gator: Clemson vs. USF

Champ Sports: FSU vs. Penn State
Music City: Arkansas vs. Georgia Tech
Liberty: Mississippi State vs. UCF
Meineke Car Care: Wake vs. Rutgers

Independence: Alabama vs. Texas A&M
Emerald: Maryland vs. Oregon State
Boise Lonely Trucker: Last bowl eligible ACC team vs. Boise State
Texas Bowl: South Carolina vs. New Mexico
Holiday: Texas vs. Arizona State

Agree? Disagree?

On Moreno's Carry Count

Image: Hipple

There were lots of calls into the call-in show asking for more carries for Knowshon, and I've seen the same sentiment on message boards. Moreno and Thomas Brown both had 22 carries in the game. While giving Moreno the ball is never a bad thing...

A couple of thoughts:
    1. Knowshon isn't a Herschel Walker or Bo Jackson sized back. He doesn't appear to have a body big and thick enough to consistently take 30-35 carries a game.

    2. It's obvious from reading Richt's comments earlier that the consecutive 25-33 carry a game performances were physically wearing on Knowshon. Moreno also took himself out of the game as part of his rotation with Thomas Brown on Saturday.

    3. You are more likely to get injured when you are tired. Ask Tech what it's like to run your top tailback into the ground only to see him unavailable for important games late on the schedule. See Tony Hollings, PJ Daniels and Tashard Choice.

    4. We weren't just trying to win one game on Saturday. We were trying to win three or four more games. There's not a logical person watching UGA football who thinks that Moreno can carry the ball successfully without consequences for all 44 carries yesterday. So how many more is the right answer?

    5. KM went for 124 yards on 22 carries. Assume he carries the ball 3 more times to the "magical" 25 carries. Given his rushing average per carry vs. Brown's on Saturday that nets the team 6.9 yards for the game. On the season, there is a 0.4 yards per carry difference between the two backs. Is that really that big a deal for this game?
My opinion: The three running back rotation stunk for all parties involved. The two running back rotation from the Auburn game worked like a champ. It was senior day, and when the passing game fell apart we needed both backs. I'd wager Moreno and Brown split the snaps around 60-40 vs. Tech.

Again, I'm not saying that there's not a difference between the two or that one isn't better than the other. All I'm saying is that there is definitely a law of diminishing returns that kicks in with over using a tailback of Moreno's size over a series of games.

BTW -- At run happy Arkansas, McFadden only averages 24.7 carries per game while Felix Jones averages 10.3 carries/game.

SEC East Co-Champs! (at least)

We would've won the whole thing outright, but Quinton jinxed us. lol. More on that later. Huge performance by the defense in the second half. The play calling was a bit odd at times, but we won and physically dominated the Wildcats for most of the game. I couldn't be happier.

Did you ever think we'd be sitting here feeling this way at halftime in Knoxville?

ESPN College Gameday for 2008?

Sun Devil Stadium

It's way too early to care, but if you were wondering....Georgia plays at Arizona State in 2008 on Sept. 20th. A look around the country using NationalChamps.net's future schedule page shows that our game should be one of the biggest games in the country that day.

LSU vs. Auburn and UT vs. Florida will also be Sept. 20th, but it's the Arizona State vs. Georgia game that will be televised by ABC. Those two big SEC games will probably end up on CBS as part of a double header. So, you have to imagine ESPN College Gameday will show up for yet another Georgia road game.

And yes...I'm going to go ahead and project our game in the desert at 8:00 pm EST because it's one of the biggest games ABC can show that week. The other games of note that day are Miami at Texas A&M, Oklahoma vs. Washington, and Nebraska vs. Virginia Tech. Our game vs. the Sun Devils looks more interesting than any of those.

Why do I think this is interesting?
When the game was scheduled, it looked like we had gone out and selected a mid-tier team from a BCS conference that would challenge us. Sort of the Pac-10's answer to the Gamecocks.

Well, the Sun Devils had to go and get all uppity and hire a quality coach. Now, both of our teams are ranked in the Top 10 and fighting for BCS births. If Georgia beats South Carolina on Sept. 6, 2008, both teams will likely roll into Tempe ranked in the Top 5-10. It could end up being the highest ranked non-conference, regular season game that we will have played since Clemson was relevant back in the '80s. Who knew it would be such a big game?

So there's that.

We now return to the 2007 season already in progress.

If you haven't picked up a ticket for the Tech game yet, they're available on Stubhub starting at around $80/each. Last time I looked, they were pretty good seats. Oh..and since I forgot to mention it....kickoff is at 3:30 pm and the game will be televised on ABC.

The Redcoat Band should be sitting in Section 130 or 131. The heaviest concentration of Georgia fans will probably be in Sections 129, 130, 228, 229, 221, 222, 210-216 (end zone upper deck), 206, 207, 201 and 202. That's where we usually have the most Georgia fans, but realistically we'll probably end up with 40 percent of the tickets. Particularly, this year with us up and them down.
